the latest RIAA steaming pile...

SAN FRANCISCO - As part of its campaign to thwart online music and movie piracy, Hollywood is now reaching into school classrooms with a program that denounces file-sharing and offers prizes for students and teachers who spread the word about Internet theft

kinda reminds me of the Hitler Youth, what did he say? ya get em before 10 and ya got em for life? or something to that effect...

this whole thing just keeps becoming more and more ridiculous.... I wish I could just make the RIAA understand that the more they do this crap, the more they disenchant the average joe and the less records they sell...

I wont EVER buy another metallica album, even if they stop recording crap and make a decent album at this point..

While the RIAA is being a bit ridiculous, you can't blame them from trying to prevent the theft of their product.

Their product? I always thought it was the artist's product, after all..they did do the lyrics, etc.

I think that there should be a new download site:

The site gets a penny a song downloaded
The artists get the rest, say 30 cents
The studios, RIAA, et al get NOTHING.

Id seriously buy all my music and stop downloading if there was a service like that. (not to mention that Id be able to afford my music then too)

It's not the artist's music if they sign over the rights to it. Stupid is as stupid does. The RIAA owns the rights to most songs out there, so they need to protect what's there's.

They are perfectly justified in the suing though, legally, but as a sales tactic, it isnt going to work well... by suing people they turn off prospective customers.

Have you seen how large these companies are though? Seriously this is one industry that needs to trim the fat, its really ridiculus.

Don't get me wrong I hate the RIAA as much as the next guy, but please let's refrain from spreading misinformation. The article is here:

http://www.gnutellanews.com/article/8601

Now then, the RIAA has nothing to do with this program, it is actually the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) that is involved here. The MPAA is the RIAA for movies. With that out of the way, I agree that this program is extremely counterproductive. I mean, once they tell kids "Don't use Kazaa to download movies for free cause it's wrong," the first thing thats gonna pop in their brains is "I can get movies for free? Sweet!" And if they already knew it, this is just gonna make 'em want to stick it to the man even more. How about using our schools to prepare kids for college, teaching them geography, chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, etc...., oh wait I guess they are preparing them for college, since these kids are gonna turn into the nefarious pirates that we all know college kids are.

The article that the thread starter quoted never mentions the RIAA, not once. zaidel and the rest of the posters in this thread, myself not included, exclusively refer to the RIAA. This is what I was pointing out. If the RIAA talked about doing something like this, fine. But I felt the thread as a whole was misleading.
