Hybrid bands + Side Projects

This thread is for some of the good hybrid bands that have formed and also let us know what they're like compared with the orignal bands. Also some side projects done by other memebers of other bands, like a perfect circle etc

just a quick list
Mad Season (pearl jam, aic, mudhoney?)
Audioslave (soundgaden, rage)
Temple Of the dog(soundgarden, pearl jam)
Down( corrosion of conformity, pantera)

there's also Velevt Revolver (i think) who are the orignal member of guns and roses and Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots. I believe they recorded a song for the hulk soundtrack, although haven't heard much since. Look interesting though.

So add any other good ones and there origin, or include the main influences in the new formed band

jwoody 10-16-2003 07:05 AM

On a radio interview in England, Dave Grohl said he was embarassed at how soft his music had been so he was working on some experimental project with Lemmy from Motorhead and Slash.

He was probably just taking the piss but. . . the mind boggles.

God of Thunder 10-16-2003 08:17 AM

There were a couple of good hybrids in the 80's

Asia - (King Crimson, Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and the Buggles)

HSAS - (Sammy Hagar, Neil Schon, Kenny Aaronson & Peter Schrieve) - a one album deal.

The Firm (Led Zeppelin, Bad Company & Uriah Heep)

The Powerstation (Duran Duran, Chic & Robert Palmer)

and in the 90's

Damn Yankees (Ted Nugent, Styx & Night Ranger)

Darth_Kettch 10-16-2003 08:45 AM

Don't know that many...

Liquid Tension Experiment (mainly made up of Dream Theater members)
Office of Strategic Influence (Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Chroma Key)

jimk 10-16-2003 09:13 AM

golden smog was/is? good:

members of wilco, jayhawks, soul asylum

i don't know if they made any discs beside down by the old mainstream .

phukraut 10-16-2003 12:57 PM

wasn't pigface a hybrid band? don't remember now.

ghezzo 10-16-2003 02:01 PM

How About A Perfect Circle

Josh Freese - drums - Played with Guns N Roses, Suicidal Tendencies, a few others
James Iha - guitar - Played for Smashing Pumpkins i think
Billy Howerdel - composer, guitar, background vocals - Worked with Tool, Nine Inch Nails
Jeordie White - Bass - Played with Marylin Manson
Maynard James Keenan - vocals - Uh, Tool? only the best band of all time

APC's first album featured...
Troy Van Leeuwen - Now Plays for Queens of the Stone Age
Paz Lenchantin - Now Plays with Billy Corgan (ex-Smashing Pumpkins vocalist) in Zwan

i dunno if it would be considered a hybrid band, but it definetly has talents from alot of respected rock bands.

Argh, you took mine. Lard is great. "Drug Raid At 4 AM" gets my heart pumping good.

I don't know if this counts, but the Talking Heads minus David Byrne made an album with each song writen and sung by a different person (Debbie Harry, Gordon Gano, Richard Hell, Johnette Napolitano, Micheal Hutchence, a few others) and is a pretty good album.

Oyserhead is Les Claypool of Primus, Stuart Copeland of The Police, and Trey Anastasio(sp?) of Phish.

high_way 10-17-2003 03:49 PM

queens of the stone age

apeman 10-19-2003 03:30 PM

Queens of the Stone Age!! I love them, but oddly enough I don't like Audioslave much and only thought Soundgarden were ok.

He's already recorded a metal album, playing every (or nearly?) instrument himself. A bunch of metal singers are contributing vocals to the tracks (such as lemmy, king diamond, etc...).

they also recorded a version of Floyd's "money" for the Italian Job soundtrack. they played a show in Las Vegas featuring a couple originals, covers (i forget of what), an STP song (Sex Type Thing) and GNR song (It's So Easy). Supposedly they'll be recording soon and putting out an album next year.

K-Wise 10-19-2003 09:52 PM

How about The Mars Volta? Ex At The Drive In members and Flea helping out on bass among others. Then ya got Deepspace5 which is Mars Ill and various other emcees. The Breeders, Candlebox most recently The Bens. Who else?

Asta!!

mercury-hg 10-20-2003 08:34 AM

In what way is Candlebox a "hybrid" band? I know Pearl Jam's old drummer played on Candlebox's most recent album, but aside from that...

K-Wise 10-20-2003 10:39 AM

Lead singer of Candlebox was also the frontman for Ugly Kid Joe and didn't he bring another guitarist with him?

Asta!!

Jadey 10-20-2003 10:31 PM

Hopefully Trent Reznor and Maynard can get this Tapeworm project working too.

Also, I don't think anyone mentioned Zwan (Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain of Smashing Pumpkins, Paz Lenchantin of APC, Matt Sweeney of Chavez, and DAvid Pajo of Tortoise).

Superjoint Ritual (Phil Anselmo-Pantera, Jimmy Bower-C.O.C.,and now HAnk WilliamsIII?)

Me First & The Gimme Gimmes (Members opf Lagwagon, NOFX< and No Use For A NAme)

You forgot to mention that Josh and Nick were from a band called kyuass and Mark lannegan(?) is from the screaming trees. And since dave grohl was on the album its fair to mention him too.

I have also read that Nick has a side project called Mondo generator ... Ive never heard them but Im gonna give them a listen.

Kevn Martin sang for Candlebox while Whitfield Crane was apparently the singer for Ugly Kid Joe. When looking up Kevin Martin, though, I noticed he just put out a solo album, so thanks for inspiring me to check what he is up to!

and to ghezzo who was apparently offended that APC was called maynard's side project: calm down there. it's all just technicalities - if you like APC, then like them. maynard did, however, sing for Tool for 3 albums, worked on the "side" with APC, and then recorded Lateralus with Tool. And there will be more Tool in the future... draw your own conclusions

clonmult 10-23-2003 05:27 AM

Neurotic Outsiders - JT from Duran, a coupla the guys from GnR, and Steve from the Sex Pistols.

Awesome band.

It may not be fair calling it Maynards other band since he was even intended to sing any of teh first album.

hum... i did not know that..

madsenj37 10-31-2003 08:25 AM

The guy who wrote the lyrics intended for a female to sing in his band. Maynard happened to know the guy from the sound or stage crew and said you gotta let me sing this. this guy is the guitar player and its early so names are distant for me.

umm ill believe thta he wasnt gonna be a lead singer but iwont believe that he didnt write the lyrics becaus i have a live version of 3 libras in whihc he says "i wrote that song about a bad relationship hoping that that person would hear it and ge tit... she calls me after a year...loved it just dindt get it" or somthing along those lines

madsenj37 10-31-2003 02:20 PM

He may have written some songs but not all of them.

i quote right from the album...

"Music and words by Billy and Maynard"

Billy Howerdel and Maynard James Keenan both write the songs for APC, same for both albums. But it is not Maynard's side project, or Maynards other band. If one member of APC gets the title of "their" band Its Billy Howerdel's band. Maynard's band is Tool

jimwah 11-03-2003 05:34 AM

Hey here's a few that you've missed

Fantomas-
Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr Bungle)
Dave Lombardo (Slayer)
Buzz Osbourne (Melvins)
Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle)

and....

Tomahawk
-Mike Patton
-John Stanier (helmet)
-Kevin Rutmanis (Melvins)
-Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard)

And thats not all

Moistboyz
-Dean Ween (Ween)
some other dude

bond007 11-03-2003 02:10 PM

Neurotic Outsiders -- maybe my expectations were too high, but they were kinda dissapointing...

Gortexfogg 11-06-2003 07:47 AM

The Traveling Wilburys. Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. I guess this band would count as a side project.

These guys seriously rock. Their voices go together extremely well and all this song writting talent in one place procuced two really great albums. If you like any of the above artists by themselves, check out The Traveling Wilburys.

quadro2000 11-06-2003 10:16 AM

The reason you haven't heard anything more from Velvet Revolver is because Scott Weiland can't figure out how to get his fucking act together and kick his drug habit. He's making Robert Downey Jr. look like the Pope.

Anyway, there's also The Thorns, who are comprised of Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins. They have a CSN feel to them.

Rumor has it that The Network is comprised of Green Day and two guys from Devo, but we won't know until their first gig at Key Club in LA on Nov. 22.
