Radiohead 'World's Greatest Band'

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/...in576457.shtml

Radiohead 'World's Greatest Band'

LONDON, Oct. 3, 2003

(AP) Radiohead was voted the world's best band at the annual Q music awards, chosen by readers of Britain's Q magazine, winning the prize for the third consecutive year.

But the band, whose recent album, "Hail to the Thief," has been praised by critics in Britain and the United States, didn't attend Thursday's ceremony, sending a video message instead.

The film was soundless, but in type at the bottom of the screen it poured scorn on the magazine for branding them "miserable." The short video ended with the line: "Radiohead aren't talking to Q."

Readers of Q had selected Radiohead over Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Blur.

Coldplay, also no-shows at the ceremony, had received the most nominations, up for best single ("Clocks"), best video ("The Scientist") and best live performers as well as the top prize. But they missed out in every category.

However, Christina Aguilera was on hand to pick up her best single award for "Dirrty."

"It's about time 'Dirrty' got some love. Thank you to Q for recognizing the woman with the balls to make this video and loving every minute of it," the 22-year-old singer said, referring to the raunchy video that accompanied the song.

Other winners included Electric Six, best video for "Gay Bar"; Robbie Williams, best live act; Blur, best album for "Think Tank"; The Thrills, best new act; The Cure, the inspiration award for their influence on music; and Duran Duran, lifetime achievement.

yep, Radiohead is the world's greatest band and I challenge anyone to name a band that's greater and isn't unknown to the general public. Some could argue that they've gotten too experimental since OK Computer, but they still put out some of the most thought-provoking, intelligent music in the business.

radiohead and tool are my favourites (current day bands) at the moment. Although i find myself really getting into godspeed you black emperor and Mogwai.

Although Radiohead are definitialy a bit of an anomoly amongst current day bands, and i guess that's a good thing. So many peeple love them or think they're pretentious twats, or don't understand all the hype.

it'd be good if Radiohead didn't get all this hype though, about being the greatest band or whatever, just let them do their own thing and hopefully more good music follows. Haven't really been let down yet though

Agree wholeheartedly.

There are a definitely a lack of "artists" in the big bad record-makin'-machine out there.... Radiohead bucks this. They continue to produce superb albums, pushing limits and ideas all-the-while being able to get these records out to the unsuspecting general public. This much innovation on a mainstream level is very rare, usually reserved for bands on small, independent labels.

I find this hilarious...and radiohead are amazingly inventive and imaginative.

They are doing what so many other mainstream artists are failing to do...pushing the barriers of music.

detractors beware, and continue on listening to your creed, Linkin Park and Effervessence (or whatever they are called) albums.
