White Stripes: Elephant
Listining to it now, fucking A, I agree with Rolling Stone, best album of the year
Anyone dissagree? |
I love it. The White Stripes can do no wrong. They've been awesome playing Conan all week. Pick up their previous CDs, they're just as good.
|
I don't think its the album of the year, but its pretty damn good.
|
Hmmm it could be album of the year if this wasn't just April. I'm digging the songs I've heard so far (Seven Nation Army, Ball and Biscuit, umm some others) but I always like the White Stripes.
|
White Stripes - fantastic band. But album of the year? No. And it really depends on who's voting, and whether its an award show or not.
Grammy's Best of the Year = No. And we know that award show is mainly crap. Get old people to vote on music, and they always take the one that reaches the largest audience. Billboard - Nope. Its not sexy enough. Jack White needs more boobs, and Meg needs to take off her top. Mercury Award - Isn't this the Canadian awards? TFP Awards - quite possibly. We have a pretty open minded listening group. Me - No. I like the album, but its not as good as De Stilj. |
I think it's great. I love the bare bones approach and the fact that they didn't use any digital effects or recording, straight to tape.
their first self titled release is still my favorite though. |
I'm really enjoying their cover of Dolly Parton "Jolene".
Heard it for the first time on Conan |
Seven Nation Army is my favorite song on the album---but the whole cd is pretty good.
|
Fuck the White Stripes. I'm tired of all these American bands trying to rip off the old British rock sound, then getting all this praise. Same for the Strokes too.
(runs for cover behind the infamous, field-tested, flame-proof wall) |
This cd kicks ass and is ten time better than the friggin strokes. God i hate them guys

I can't forgive the White Stripes for their set at Chene Park in Detroit last June. No one wants to hear a drum and a guitar. Especially when they are obviously messed up on something and sucking pretty hard. most of the songs devolved into weird guitar and drum solos, and then ended abruptly. The only way I'll see them again is if they tour with a backing band. Elephant might be good, but I'm a little tired of the press teabagging them.
The Strokes also played that concert and rocked the house. Anyone found dissing the Strokes is going to be put on "Bad Taste Suspicion". |

baaaaaaaa
The Stripes are not ripping off a British sound. If anything they are taking from Roots american Blues, throwing in some folk and a distortion pedal. |
Exactly. The Stripes are very American. To say they are ripping off a British sound is pretty ironic.
I like the album. I think it's very good. |
Just listened to it for the first time. Maybe if I try a couple more times it'll get better (I did not 'do it' for me.) Who am I to argue with music critics though.

I read music reviews from "professional" critics and from other listeners on various boards and communities. I agree with some and disagree with others. What's important to me is whether or not I like it. And, "Elephant" is a good album. Definitely too early to call it album of the year. The Mercury Prize is the music award from England for the "best" new artist in music. |

Ironic as in the British bands were influenced by American blues, country, and early rock, and so are The (American) Stripes, and they are called rip-offs of the Brits. I think it's definition 2. :)

They still suck though. ;) |
Who the hell cares where they are from, or who they are ripping off if you like their sound?
|
I like both the stripes and the strokes. although I have to agree with Skettios, the strokes rocked the house when I caught them live, white stripes were just a different sound altogether live.
I liken the strokes more to a band like the feelies (from jersey) than to any brit punk stuff myself. but most of my friends don't agree. |
i like them I too enjoy the bare bones under produced sound. its odd that what was common place in the 50's 60's is now a novellty in the record biz.. anyway it think we need more bands with "the" in their name like The anals or The band members
|
Seven Nation Army, great. The rest of it is so-so. Lots of potential here they need to decide what they want to do.
|
i havent gotten to see the stripes yet, so i can neither confirm nor deny the weirdness of a show. but hey, at least youre seeing an original show, right? as for the strokes, i caught them live here in orlando, and after maneuvering my way through all the poser emo "better-than-you" little shits, i was pretty dissappointed. im not saying they sucked, im just expressing my opinion that the show was pretty horrible. maybe it was an off night. but, i cant get over the fact that all of their songs had the same drum beat, and the singer, julian casablancas (yeah, thats spelt wrong) was pretty drunk, and forgot most of the words
|
I saw them at Coachella last week. They were fucking amazing live.
|
oh yeah, how was coachella?
|
i heard it roxed
