Trying To Find An Elton John Song

Greetings All,
I am trying to find an Elton John song I heard on the radio but like normal the dj didn't give me a title. The best lyric was, "its like trying to drink whiskey from a wine bottle" and he kept repeating "I need a change....." Does anybody know this song? I thought it was an awesome song and I would really like to track it down. Thanks for any help.

My favorite Elton John song is "Captain Fantastic and the brown dirt cowboy from the album of the same name. If you haven't listened to it, check it out!

Let's see if I can quote the beginning of the song without cheating.

Captain Fantastic
Raised & regimented
Hardly a hero...

Absolutely cool album, tho' Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player are a couple of my faves as well. I had them all on vinyl. Reminds me that I should replace them & add to my CD collection.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is my favorite.
I also liked his version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Rocket Man, and Your Song.

But he's one of my all time favorite artists, so they're all good.. But I don't admit that to to many people..

Does anyone remember I Feel Like the Gun in the Hand of Robert Ford? That was good to..

So Doc, what's wrong with admitting that you dig some of Elton John's earlier stuff? The man, along with his partner Bernie Taupin, is a musical genius.

I remember I Feel Like The Gun...

And I feel like a bullet in the gun of Robert Ford
I'm low as a paid assassin is
You know I'm cold as a hired sword
I'm so ashamed can't we patch it up
You know I can't think straight no more
You make me feel like a bullet honey in the gun of Robert Ford

Some of my faves include Daniel, Grey Seal, Levon, Elderberry Wine, Blues For Baby & Me, Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters...the list goes on.

On a kinda funny note, I didn't quite get the meaning of Jamaica Jerk Off until a couple years later (I'm a chick) and when I did, I wouldn't play it out of embarassment.

Here's the lyrics to what I believe is Elton's best piano work. The lyrics are pretty interesting as well.

Album = Caribou 1974

"An extremely quiet child," they called you in your school reports
"He's always taken interest in the subjects that he's taught"
So what was it that brought the squad car screaming up your drive
To notify your parents of the manner in which you died?

At St. Patrick's every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins
"Oh, he's unconcerned with competition, he never cares to win"
But blood stained a young hand that never held a gun
And his parents never thought of him as their troubled son

"Now you'll never get to Heaven," Mama said
Remember Mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Grow up straight and true blue
Run along to bed"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

They had you holed up in a downtown bar screaming for a priest
Some gook said, "His brain's just snapped"
Then someone called the police
You'd knifed a Negro waiter who had tried to calm you down
Oh, you'd pulled a gun and told them all to lay still on the ground

Promising to hurt no one, providing they were still
A young man tried to make a break, with tear-filled eyes you killed
That gun butt felt so smooth and warm cradled in your palm
Oh, your childhood cried out in your head, "they mean to do you harm"

"Don't ever ride on the devil's knee," Mama said
Remember mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Pay your penance well, my child
Fear where angels tread"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

Within an hour the news had reached the media machine
A male Caucasian with a gun had gone berserk in Queens
The area had been sealed off, the kids sent home from school
Fourteen people lying dead in a bar they called the Kicking Mule

Oh, they pleaded to your sanity for the sake of those inside
"Throw out your gun, walk out slow just keep your hands held high"
But they pumped you full of rifle shells as you stepped out the door
Oh, you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law

"You've slept too long in silence," Mama said
Remember Mama said
Ticking, ticking
"Crazy boy, you'll only wind up with strange notions in your head"
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

From the album *Caribou.*
I'll have to try to find a copy.

The lives of Elton & Bernie were pretty angsty between the first album, Empty Sky (1970-ish), thru Captain Fantastic (released after Caribou, I think), but I think they produced some of their best work.

Double D,

Yup, their loss.

I'm not sure if the locals are bothered by Elton's music catalog of the past 10-15 years or his sexual identity, but I remember (as a kid) being totally perplexed by his admission in Rolling Stone Mag. that he was bi-sexual (toe-in-the water thing prior to fessing up to being a gay- one could lose a career over that, back in the dark ages). When I finally understood it a few years later, I thought nothing of it- it didn't seem to have any affect on his music & that's all that mattered to me.

Same here.. If anything, it kind of made me listen closer, and that really turned me on to his music..

I just downloaded Ticking from Kazaa and loved it. Loved it. But I don't know what Ticking actually means. What is the act of ticking? What does it mean? Is it some arcane reference or is it right in front of my face? Thanks

Yes, I do. It gives me goosebumps just to read the lyrics.
What was your favorite off Madman...?

LEVON

Levon wears his war wound like a crown
He calls his child Jesus
'Cause he likes the name
And he sends him to the finest school in town

Levon, Levon likes his money
He makes a lot they say
Spend his days counting
In a garage by the motorway

He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas day
When the New York Times said God is dead
And the war's begun
Alvin Tostig has a son today

And he shall be Levon
And he shall be a good man
And he shall be Levon
In tradition with the family plan
And he shall be Levon
And he shall be a good man
He shall be Levon

Levon sells cartoon balloons in town
His family business thrives
Jesus blows up balloons all day
Sits on the porch swing watching them fly

And Jesus, he wants to go to Venus
Leaving Levon far behind
Take a balloon and go sailing
While Levon, Levon slowly dies
