Favorite Cover Song
To expand upon the "All Along the Watchtower" thread....What's your favorite cover in general?
|
Statesboro Blues- Cover :Allman Brothers Band; Original: Blind Willie McTell
|
Rage Against the Machine's version of Cypress Hill's 'How I Could Just Kill a Man' is tops for me at the moment.
|
Stevie Ray Vaughan version of "Little Wing"
|
Alien Ant Farm's version of Smooth Criminal. It turned such a crappy song in to a pretty good one
|
Foo Fighter's Baker Street
|
blues standards aside (there's just too many to consider each performance a cover), i'll second SRV's "Little Wing" and add his "Voodoo Chile."
i'm also quite partial to Gn'R's "Live and Let Die" (Wing's original) |
I don't know if i can pick just one. So I'll pick three.
Tool cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter"... turned a good song into an amazing song. Metallica's cover of Bob Seger's "Turn the Page"... so very good. Last but not least, the cover of Tears For Fears' "Mad World" that was done for Donnie Darko. |
The Finnish band HIM does alot of great covers.
My fav is their cover of "The Reaper" by the BLue Oyster Cult |
Here are some of my fav's:
1)Dave Grohl's Tiny Dancer 2)Johnny Cash's I See A Darkness 3)Radiohead's Rhinestone Cowboy 4)White Stripes Jolene 5)RATM"s The Ghost of Tom Joad 6)REM's Superman 7)Smashing Pumpkin's Landslide 8)The Sunday's Wild Horses 9)Tori Amos's Smells Like Teen Spirit 10)U2 Helter Skelter With a very, very, very very special honorable mention to William Shatner's Rocket Man P.S. If you haven't heard I See A Darkness by Johnny Cash stop what you are doing even if you are giving birth or performing open-heart surgery and listen to that song. |
Luciferion's cover of "Fight Fire with Fire"
|
I'd have to say a few things...one
1) No band could ever cover Metallica properly 2) Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar 3) Metallica - Turn the Page 4) Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide (Billy's voice makes it SO MUCH BETTER) 5) Metallica - Am I Evil 6) Metallica - The Small Hours |
Hot Water Music doing "Radio" by Alkaline Trio.
Fun b/c the first line of the song is: 'Shaking like a dog shitting razorblades...' |
Quote:
Nirvana- Man who sold the world Nirvana- Where did you sleep last night |
Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzie's Whiskey in the Jar ( I think it's better than the original) Not to fond of their Turn the Page though, I think Bob Seger probably puked when he heard it.
Definately Stevie Ray Vaughns cover of Voodoo Child |
Bob Dylan's cover of "Baby, let me follow you down"
|
Metallica--"Last Caress" (orig. Misfits)
Nirvana--"Where Did You Sleep Last Night" (trad., usually credited to Leadbelly) and all of their Vaselines covers Naked Raygun--"Suspect Device" (Stiff Little Fingers) Faith No More--"War Pigs" (Black Sabbath) Sonic Youth--"Touch Me I'm Sick" (Mudhoney) Tons of others... |
I used to run the sound board for a local band who did a really great cover of Misty Mountain Hop - turned it into a VERY heavy song.
|
I wouldn't say these are the best, or my favorites, but just to throw out some that aren't up here that I listen to (I like most of what was already said)
KMFDM "Material Girl" Rammstein "Barbie Girl" Frail "Space Oddity" Manson "Tainted Love" In Flames "Murders in the Rue Morgue" Johnny Cash "Hurt" Rammstein "Stripped" |
Although it's shitty quality, I always liked Goat Punishment's (ie: Weezer) live covers of Nirvana songs. There's five of them, if I remember correctly.
|
Ensemble cast of There's Something About Mary singing Buttercup.
|
Mannfred Mann's version of Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light"
Sting's live version of "Little Wing" |
SRV's "Little Wing"
|

I just read this thread, I must say, I agree very strongly with all of these choices :) |
Travis's version of "Hit Me Baby One More Time". At first, it's great simply for the laugh factor, but as you listen to it more and more, you realize what a wonderful song it actually is...especially when not recorded by Britney Spears!
|
Melvins-Smells like teen spirit
|
Any thing by...

theres lots if covers i like, cant think of much any atm.. all that comes to mind is Ministry's cover of 'Lay Lady Lay'. and Codeseven's "Boys of Summer" god i kno there's more i like no one's mentioned tho.. |
my favorite cover ever is "Dancing in the Moonlight", a Thin Lizzy song covered by the Smashing Pumpkins. it's soooooooo mellow and easy going. it'll bring tears to your eyes if you were ever in love at age 15 or so :(
also thoroughly love "I'm on Fire" by Bruce Springsteen covered by Heather Nova "Whiskey in a Jar" an old irish song and Thin Lizzy cover by Metallica hmm.... Johnny Cash did a killer Danzig cover of "13" just a few faves up there.:) |
Carp. When I started reading this thread, I had a GREAT song in mind, but it has left me by now.
Oh, wait. The covers of "Cinnamon Girl" (Neil Young) and "Summer Breeze" (don't remember who originally) that Type O Negative produced brought those songs to an entirely new level. One they sincerely needed to be brought to. |
Anything by Me First and the Gimme gimmies.
|

Am I Evil? (covered by Metallica) The Small Hours (covered by Metallica) |
Johnny Cash - Highway Patrolmen (orig. Bruce Springsteen)

Rage Against the Machine's Renegade CD has some pretty cool covers in it. I also like Soundgarden's cover of "Come Together". Soundgarden also did a Spinal Tap cover of the song "Big Bottom", which is pretty cool too.
|
fu manchu - godzilla
|
I love Johnny Cash's version of Hurt.
Metallica's Whiskey in a Jar and Turn the Page are also great. |
String Cheese Incident-Gin and Juice
The Coolies- I am a Rock |
Quote:
Lou Reed's version of This Magic Moment. The Black Crowes - Hard To Handle The Animals - Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom. |
New Found Glory had an EP a few years ago with fun covers of The Neverending Story theme song, 'The Goonies r good enough', "The Glory of Love" (from one of the karate kid movies) and a few others.
Johnny Cash has been doing a bunch too, everyone mentions 'Hurt', I like his covers of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" and Beck's "Rowboat" too. The Ramones did a killer version of "Street Fighting Man" and Pearl Jam does a great "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" |
I'll give you three:
Ben Harper - Strawberry Fields (Beatles) Dave Matthews - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan) Metallica - Tuesday's Gone (Lynyrd Skynyrd) |
Orgy - Blue Monday

Phish - Gin and Juice (Snoop Dogg) Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics?) NOFX - Straight Edge (Minor Threat) Pearl Jam - Last Kiss (Dunno) Rancid - Vanilla Sex (NOFX) (Rancid sucks ass though) |
There is something about a cover song that hits you in a special way. Maybe it is because you have already been hit with that song and it builds up memories and then bam, you get hit with it again but in a different way... Yeah... Something like that...
Cover song of the moment that hits me like that.... Johny Cash's cover of NIN's Hurt.... Yeah, obvious... but still damn cool. |
Sugar Ray did a fairly decent version of "Abracadabra". That´s one of my favourites. But like a couple of others here I can also vote for anything by Me First and The Gimme Gimmes.
|
twiztid - people are strange (doors cover)
radiohead - wish you were here (pink floyd cover) sublime - no woman, no cry (marley cover) ben harper - strawberry fields forever (beatles cover) rage against the machine - fuck the police (nwa cover) marilyn manson - another brick in the wall (pink floyd cover) |
Fear Factory and Danzig - Enter Sandman (Metallica)
Sepultura - The Hunt (New Model Army, the original SUCKED) |
Nirvana - Lake of fire
Gob - Paint it black Manson - Sweet dreams Metallica - Turn the page Whitney Houston - I will always love you I'm not a whitney fan but it was better than the original by big juggs.. I mean dolly... /me goes to find some of these covers on Kazaa |
If you like covers, you absolutely owe it to yourself to get the latest Johnny Cash CD. His cover of "Hurt" is fantastic, and he does "Bridge over Troubled Waters" with Fionna Apple backing him up. It's tearful. The only 'cringe' song is when he tries to do "Your Own Personal Jesus". Cash doesn't get early 90's British techno-pop. Otherwise it is definitely worth the purchase price / drive space.
|
jeff buckley - hallelujah.

The Donnas' cover of Too Fast For Love is pretty funny.
I really dig The Happy Mondays' version of Step On, though I don't remember who did the original version. My band (plug) just recorded a cover of Cry, Baby, Cry by The Beatles... I'm inclined to think it's good. ;) Thraeryn was right with Type O's cover of Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young. It's fabulous. |
I dont know who sings it but it is supposedly Phish covering Snoop Dogs Gin and Juice.
|

|
Holy SHIT! Foo Fighters redid Baker Street? I gotta hear that....
I say Metallica's cover of Turn the Page. Killer song to begin with. |
This one just popped into my head as I was grabbing a Jeff Beck CD to throw in - it's been a favorite for a long time
Faces - Maybe I'm Amazed Wow, wow, wow. It's a live recording (I believe it's on "Long Player" but I don't feel like digging through the crates of vinyl right now to verify) and really incredible to listen to. Rod seems unsure of either himself or the audience's reaction at first but about a third of the way in, you can tell he's getting his legs in the song and the band is as well and by the last half, they are just _going_for_it_ Love Rod's intro; "You might know this song and you might not. If you don't, I REALLY don't know where you've been..." |
"Velvet Revolver - Money"
Good cover of Pink Floyd. Gotta love the Wah-Wah pedal! :D |
elixirs cover of Elton´s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
superb |
