Daft Punk :O
Who else thinks their music is really annoying and repetitive :(
I'll go for some *good* techno anyday, but for some reason Daft Punk just sucks for me. |
True but I still listen to it when its on.
|
I like a couple of thier tracks, But it's too commercial for me..I do like Underground House alittle bit though. Although, I would rather listen to a Good Jungle Track Before I listen to House.
|
I love the video for Around the World. Otherwise, meh.
|
Annoying? Repetitive? Commercial?
I dont know if it was released over there. but If you can find it get your hands on ALIVE 1997. http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...98767ulzib.jpg Alive 1997 reveals the French duo Daft Punk as one of the brightest entertainers in the occasionally stale world of album-based electronic dance. True, techno and house DJs can light up a crowd like few others, but the increasing artist slant of electronica often results in push-button programming and straight-from-DAT live performances, with most of the heavy lifting relegated to the lighting supervisor and effects computers. This brief glimpse at Daft Punk's live show circa 1997 (their major breakout year) is a tour de force of high-energy theatrics and flair. Aside from the pair of "WDPK" interludes, Alive 1997 includes only three tracks, but they're so radically different from their album versions that they're only barely familiar. The duo's biggest hit so far, "Da Funk," is stretched out to 16 minutes with a start-and-stop improvisation section that brings the crowd to a peak, while "Rollin' & Scratchin'" never looks back after breaking right on through the red-line. An energizing document, Alive 1997 is one of the few live records to approximate the excitement of the original live show. — John Bush. I hope it changes your minds. |
I agree they are pretty annoying.
|
Repetitive?
I don't think any of their songs sound the same. All are recognisable as Daft Punk but they're not all the same. And it's not techno. |
They've actually got quite a range of styles - some of it is utter crap, and some is really quite good, you'd not think it was the same producers.
|
i agree with Eiresol; what i´ve always liked about Daft Punk was there ability to sound so different... but still be recognisable.
thanks for that Magpie. |
Their new album is what most of the people here would call "annoying and repetitive" but I like it tremendously. You can listen to it over and over and over again. We played it at work today and just let it roll. I recommend anyone who is interested in Daft Punk give their new album Human After All a listen. It's like someone above said: Their are highly original but as soon as you hear any of their songs, within 5 seconds you are like "DAFT PUNK!!!!!!!!"
Their newest album definitely follows a trend (robotic) and I like it a lot. A couple of reviewers and critics are calling it their "career suicide" move but maybe more bands need to try stuff like this. It fucking rocks! |

/nickpicky rant ahead
one of these days I'm gonna get together with some other people here on TFP and make a tutorial on what "techno" music really is.. it's a specific genre of electronic music. Sorry it's a huge pet peeve of mine. Techno IS NOT the term for the encompassing genre of electronic. ok there.. whew I feel better now. Daft Punk is supposed to be repetitive. It's straight house. That's just how it is. Do I like them.. every now and then I'll throw a track or two up just to break things up a bit, but they aren't my fav. I'm too into the DnB, Jungle, Breakbeat scene to really get into poppy style dance house. I love house music don't get me wrong.. it's just that Daft is a little to synthy for me. |

I'm not questioning your understanding of the term, you've stated that you're not really a fan so I don't expect that you've heard many of their more obscure tracks. My own opinion of Daft Punk... I like about 20%, hate about 20% (especially the Discovery album) and the rest... it just doesn't really do anything for me. In fact, the ones I like the most are Daft Punk remixes of other peoples tunes or other peoples remixes of Daft Punk tunes. |

The rant was there because I see it happening and hear it all the time, not just on this thread. People around here (where I live) hate when they say it accidentally cuz they know a lecture is coming :p You're right I probably haven't heard any of the obscure tracks.. but if only a few of their tunes could fit into the techno category then they still aren't techno producers ;) |
I hate it. I hate all of it. I hate their sound. I hate their best songs. I hate every ounce of energy they pour forth into their music. I don't care if it's repetitive..I don't care if it's extremely synthesized...but I fucking hate this band. It honestly grates my nerves when any of their music is played. I'm a huge fan of electronic music as well...it's just their overall sound that really bothers me.

is playing at my house... my house.

Lasereth tells me this in real life about 4 times a day  I play it anyway |

I like the discovery album and most of alive 1997 for some reason homework doesn't grab me much, but if it's on I won't turn it off. Last night I had a dream about you...in this dream I'm dancing right beside you... |

but... i do have some of "on repeat" for my voice mail message. i love it. my friends hate it. |

Iskurs guide..is ok at best.. his stupidity and arrogance shows more than anything. He doesn't delve into the history like I would like to get into. I mean..how do you not mention Frankie Knuckles in House? (maybe I missed it)
anyone who slams nu-breaks or any genre b/c the british got a hold of it.. needs to be cut off. Look at the jungle/dnb scene and tell me that the british don't know what their doing  |

<---American
<--know what I'm doing :D The american DnB scene has made HUGE advances in the past few years. With artists like Dara, Dieselboy and the like putting out some great albums and some great shows.. the future looks bright. Sure we don't have anything close to Pendulum (best evar) but hey.. we're workin on it. |
Daft Punk sounds like a lot of other techno: not very pleasant.
The only techno artists who have large collections of songs that I like so far are Paul Oakenfold (who is the best ever), Moby, and The Chemical Brothers. |
I think Daft Punk are great and that Homewerk was a landmark album through and through.
|
I'm a big fan of Daft Punk and have 3 of their CD's Homework, Discovery, and Human After All.
I will agree with some people that some of their music is hard to just sit down and listen to. But I think Daft makes more of their music for a European Club scene rather than sit in your car with the tunes up. In short its got a beat you can dance to. Discovery is a great CD especially for US listeners because it blends more together and if you have ever seen Interstellar 5555 then it also tells an excellent story. Here is just a small plea to people who don't like daft punk; listen one more timne and get up and dance! Why the heck not! I like it either way but something with music and the beats get me going! |
I could understand a dislike for Human After All. Give the song "Release the Beast" by Breakwater a listen, then listen to "Robot Rock" and tell me which is better. A lot of samples from Homework and Discovery barely sound altered (i.e. Edwin Birdsong - Cola Bottle Baby), but "Robot Rock" takes the cake. Someone did an amusing proof-of-concept song called "Suck My Cock" in a few hours or less to show what a rush job their latest album was.

Sorry dude, Dara is Irish so scratch that one off yer list. |
Daft Punks simplicity is what makes them the shit....they're the electronic equivalent of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Yes I know he's Irish..but he's hitting the American scene pretty hard ;) |
