The Raveonettes - Whip It Up / Kings of Leon - Youth & Young Manhood

I bought these two albums (both are below ten dollars each). I thought I'd give you my opinion about them.

The Raveonettes - Whip It Up

I bought this alubum having never heard anything from the band before. Sometimes blindly picking up a CD can be bad, (Insert album not worth metioning here) and sometimes it can be good ( or great like REFUSED - The Shape of Punk To Come).

Having recently dug into CD's like Sonic Youth's Washing Machine and My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, I've been forming a palite for dream pop/ noise pop, and The Raveonettes bring and edgy, quickstep album to us for enjoyment.

The quck, musinoise is follows more of a banging punk tempo, rathen than a hemognous, wave-upon-wave of noise like a My Bloody Valentine. The vocals are subdued with an added quality melody with all verses sung together with the male-female duo of Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner.

The music has a emphemeral quality, while the music follows a more garage progression, with a musinoise tone.

It's getting heavy rotation in my car.

I like "Do You Believe Her" (track 3) followed by "Chains" (track 4). I'm reminded a bit of Swervedriver. I like what I hear.

Kings of Leon - Youth & Young Manhood

This group has gottned quite a bit of buzz, so I'll will simply give my opinion of the album.

Lynard Skynard is from my town, and my father brought me up on bluegrass and Doc Watson, so I appriciate the tonal quality of the songs on the album. One of the singers sounds like he had a good novacaine shot int he jaw before hitting the studio, which cna be charming like the rugged, toothless LaRoushe character in the movie Adaptation.

The style all comes together nicely with lines that could've some from some rocking chair front poarch or some jack daniels christened motor cycle bar: drawling something about you stealing all his whisky, something about you stealing all his "smoke." Very charming.

But, style is not just the name of the game. Why go to the resturant for the crazy shit on the walls? They Kings of Leon jam out on tracks like "Spiral Staircase."

I hear parts, jam/ bluegrass band, southern influenced violent femme songs, and the strokes.

I doubt that this album will delight me for months on end, but it did remind me of the fun that can be had with dirty southern music. Long live the jam bands. I need to find that Old Crow Medicine Show CD.

I recomend "Molly's Chambers" and "Holy Roller Novocaine."

Heh, that's funny. I was going to pick up the old BRMC album while I got those two, but I decided that I shouldn't spend so much.

I never heard the mixes, I'll have to check them out.

May I make a recomendation? The Rapture. "The House of Jealous Lovers" and "Caravan" (out of the races and onto the Tracks) are great songs. I mention them because Kid 606 did a great remix of The Rapture on "I'm taking Notes on the Underground."
