help compiling a punk cd
for the last week i've been vigorously downloading punk, trying to make "the best punk cd ever" .. in my opinion anyways :) so far i've got
-guttermouth -propagandhi -bad religion -alkaline trio -afi -tsunami bomb -the movielife -rufio -rancid -the misfits -thrice -brand new -pennywise -anti-flag -the queers -less than jake -me first and the gimme gimmes -no use for a name -the ataris any suggestions of good punk bands would be great, i dont think i've downloaded a single bad song... other than poor quality that is.. |
no punk cd could be complete without nofx
|
Dude, if you do a search first, you might have been able to answer your own question. Here's a nother thread with a ton of good punk sounds
http://tfproject.org/tfp/showthread....&threadid=9345 |
no ramones, clash, stooges???!!!!
god, i'm old. |
Remove the Ataris and put Lagwagon on it instead :D, and NOFX is an absolute must as well. Other than that... hmmm... I've always loved Randy. Real McKenzies and Floggin Molly are great as well. Good Riddance has some good songs as well. And Snuff are great :D First Punk rock show I ever went to was with Snuff and a local band.
But it really depends on what you want to create. Punk is such a huge genre, atleast if you include hardcore and all it's subgenres. From what I can see from your list you're mostly consentrating on the 3rd (90ies) generation, allthough I don't know all the bands you listed. If you really want to include the classics, Ramones or Sex Pistols is a must, as well as Dead Kennedys. |
The Bled? well, i dont really know if they're punk, but ill plug them because im friends with the bass player. they are kind of metal/punk with a real screamy type of lead singer. they are ok, but they need a new lead singer. yeah, Check out "The Bled."
|
yeah i forgot about lagwagon, i've got them on too :) i'll get some NOFX as well and check out some from that other thread (thanks for that too, didnt think to search ;))

The Clash (once you get past the english accents :P) and The Ramones are a great addition if you want to add the oldies.
|
The Ramones, MxPx, Lagwagon.

Yeah word to Drewg. The Sex Pistols practically started Punk along with The New York Dolls. No punk cd would be complete without em. Now though The New York Dolls were not called punk at that time some believe that they were indeed the first punk band when you hear the similarities in the sound of the music.

and if you don't put the clash on there you should be shot, point blank :D also add: minor threat black flag operation ivy [if you don't mind throwing a little ska flavor into the mix] |
Ah, yes. Operation Ivy is good as well, and as he already has Less than Jake, he shouldn't be afraid of a little ska flavor.
|
gotta have The Clash, Ramones, Fugazi, Social Distortion, Bad Brains, Sex Pistols
and.... I think the Talking Heads are pretty punk too, they were just ahead of their time and dont sound like the traditional "rough punk" But they were playing CBGB's with all the others at the same time. |
Word to that.
Asta!! |
definately nofx. what about dead kennedy's?
|
By this point you should consider more than 1 cd since you need to cover a wider period.
London, NYC, LA - that should neatly sum up most of the punk era (except Fugazi & Unwound, etc.) Or try something broader like early punk, 80's punk, & modern punk. You could also consider branching out to pop-punk like Superchunk's 'Slack Motherfucker'. |
