Eminem

Eminem... Slim Shady... Marshall Mathers... whatever you want to call him...

I want to hear what you all have to say about the Great White Rapper.

Go.

RAMONES!!! 04-23-2003 04:34 PM

he sucks, plan and simple

meanSpleen 04-23-2003 04:36 PM

He has a great marketing group helping him.

qpid 04-23-2003 05:21 PM

I like him, at first I didn't but then I listened to some of his songs on his cds which were not released as singles and they struck a cord with me

Plummie 04-23-2003 05:24 PM

Eminem has skillz. He writes lyrics that are amusing and expresses himself no holds barred.

I respect him as an artist, even if I do not agree with everything he says.

Ditto

I'm a fan.

I have all his songs and enjoy listening to them. They are very well done, catchy, and have great bearts.

He seems to be one of the rappers that is either loved or hated, and I certainly don't hate his music. I really do enjoy it, although I don't necessarily support the messages and themes behind his lyrics.

Peetster 04-23-2003 06:53 PM

Interesting that you had this thread started, I came here to discuss just this.

I have very eclectic tastes in music. Read that as "way odd". I'm a 42 year old white guy.

I just got "The Eminem Show" last weekend. I can't relate to many of the songs, but lots of them hooked me. But they make me feel, I don't know, dirty. I like them, I've been listening to them for a few days, but some are so gritty. Reminds me of the first time I watched Pulp Fiction.

The song to his mother is stunning, filled with the emotions of a man cleaning the skeletons from his closet. But when he tries to make a point about AIDS; do I really need to hear about a woman's genitals as if covered in sour cream from the discharge?

Mixed feelings. Great rap, great rhymes, I just think he's going for the shock factor too aggressively.

Peetster 04-23-2003 06:55 PM

Different note. 8 Mile is stellar, I'd put it into the same catagory as the Cypress Hill classic "So You Want to be a Rock Superstar".

laconic1 04-23-2003 08:11 PM

I like a lot of the songs that don't get airplay. Kim and Drips are two of my favorites.

Even without Dre producing I think he has a lot of talent. He can actually write some decent stuff, unlike a lot of the crap out there.

charlesesl 04-23-2003 08:59 PM

He is probly that greatest raper today
I really like his unique style, which is different from all the black rapers out there

World's King 04-24-2003 12:30 AM

I guess I should weigh in...

I listen to hip-hop more than anything else and have been all my life. I respect the man for his talent and marketing skills but I really can't stand the fucker. I own all of his CDs because I enjoy his music but I would never wish to meet him and I thought 8 Mile was one of the worst movies ever. He isn't at all what he says he is... His mother isn't a bitch... His X-wife isn't a whore... His life isn't anywhere near that horrid...

It's an act like the rest of the bg rappers today. 50 Cent is a poor little rich boy that left home to be "hard core" and was an idiot and got shot.

That's it. I'm done.

brandon11983 04-24-2003 07:40 PM

he needs to be drug into the street and shot.

vermin 04-24-2003 07:57 PM

Only ever heard his music on Saturday Night Live. Wasn't that impressed.
After the Beastie Boys' third album either I burned out on rap or everyone is just re-hashing the same crap over and over. This is the same problem I have with blues bands: after SRV died all the newcomers just sounded like wannabes.

wordssmith22 04-24-2003 10:26 PM

he's got skills, especially while freestyling. but for the most part, the majority of songs he puts out are pretty lame. all that hip-pop stuff he does that gets played on trl sucks. but he can kick an ill verse every now and then. lose yourself was good lyrically, but the beat was just horrible. same with sing for the moment.

bundy 04-24-2003 10:47 PM

i'm a fan of his work.
like Plummie said, i don't agree with what he's saying, but he has great talent.

i wonder how long he can maintain that rage though?

spankthru 04-24-2003 11:09 PM

i like it that he actually makes his own songs, and not some pre-fabricated crap, but it's not the best music. the older stuff, like the slim shady lp, was pretty good. now he's just bitching about his mama.

Magpie0001 04-25-2003 05:57 AM

In my opinion Eminem is a talentless little bitch.
I dont think his rapping is is that empressive. Theres many many other REAL Mc's out there better than him with smart intelligent flows that make you think. Hes Pop not hip hop. Commercial industry driven hollow shit. His Mc'in is shallow & 1 dimentional. His songs are disposable, easily acessable, and simplistic.
I see peps in the metro statoins looking all hardcore, breakdancing to Eminem - Its pathetic! Id bet my life the same people who like Eminem naint got a clue who Grandmaster Flash, Spoonie Gee, Cold Crush Bros, Kurtis Blow, Mantronix, Doug E Fresh, J5, M.M.M., Ultramagnetic M.c's Dr Octagon, Rob Swift, Latryx, Mos Def, Blackalicious or The Piklz are (I could continue!).
I got free tickets to the premiere of 8 Mile & I could write a book about how false, idiotic & self-promoting it is. Why is he almost the only white person in the movie with a speaking role?? Who gives a fuck if that guys name is Clarence? If 8 Mile is a hip-hop movie where are the 4 elements????? I was at leist expecting the Dj to do something!!!
He (his marketing crew) uses shock tactics to gain popularity, Gay bashing, etc etc... Next months Rolling Stone front page - "EMINEM, HIP-HOP's NEW BAD BOY!!" followed by $$$
But of course the CATTLE love it. He's marketing/business not music, he's fashion not Hip-hop.

Spungfoo 04-25-2003 06:16 AM

He has some rythmical talent, but I've heard much, much better. Other than that he's just a huge attention whore.

soopafreek 04-25-2003 06:52 AM

dude's got skills. you can't deny that. he may not rap about the usual stuff, but he's doing his own thing.... i like his stuff.

Ambition 04-25-2003 07:29 AM

He's a great lyricist. Personally I like his music. I don't agree with everything he says. But ultimately it's a question of "is he serious about what he raps about?". He claims that his lyrics are real, and then claims that he's just kidding. Does it matter? He's making music. I don't think it matters what he says. Some people make music about what they feel in their hearts, and others do it to entertain because they have the ability to. Wether he's being real or not, I think he's a talented artist. You can't expect everyone to like him, we're all different. But I think his appeal to a generally large amount of people prove that either he's good or entertaining.

Prophecy 04-25-2003 10:58 AM

Personally, I like some of his stuff. But I have to say that some of his best stuff isn't on his records, its on other peoples. Everytime I hear him as a guest artist it sounds like he's really giving it his all. Some of the tracks on his own records don't feel that way. This being said, i'm also a huge fan of D12.

But Magpie0001 is right there are better rapper out there than M&M. But you have to admit Dr. Dre knew what he was doing when he signed him. Dre is filthy rich 4 times now. And with 50 Cent joining the mix, M&M and Dre are gonna be richer still reguardless of people liking, loving or hating him. Some one is gonna buy his stuff just to see what all the talk is about.

JoeyB 04-25-2003 11:08 AM

I don't like him and don't own his music.

and then I hear a song by him.

and then I can't get it out of my head.

and then I sing it to myself for the next 3 months.

He's a unique talent and has found a niche for himself. I'm happy for him, I just wish he could be happy for himself.

Atropos4 04-25-2003 05:50 PM

I like his music, and I own his cd's

Yeah he exagerates a lot of his problems ...just like marilyn manson isn't really a freak , he just made himself that way because he sold more albums.....it's all about the marketing....

even so ....I like his style....He's funny.....And if you pay attention you'll realize , you're not really suposed to take him seriously

kurtisj 11-27-2006 12:30 PM

i like Eminem's music because he uses his freedom of speech and lets everybody know how he feels. Of course we can all say that his life isnt as bad as he makes it out to be and he didnt grow up on the streets, but not many rappers could make it if they sang about how awesome and full of love their child-hoods were, while living in a small rural town in the midwest, not to say thats where Eminem is from just elaborating.

zed wolf 12-03-2006 02:03 AM

I like his stuff. It is mostly original and well thought out compared to most of the "i've got lots of money, big chrome wheels lots of guns and I am going to kill you" type rap and hip-hop out there.
I think I have all of his albums too.

bollocks 12-03-2006 07:08 PM

Meh, pretty good when rated against other mainstream rappers but that's nothing to be proud of.

Sweetpea 12-03-2006 11:46 PM

I think he promotes a culture of ignorance and non tolerance, esp. towards the gay community and women. He does however, show respect for his daughter.

I don't own any of his records, nor would I ever support him. I don't mind saying a few of his songs have some great weight behind them, esp. mockingbird about his little girl, I thought it was well written and powerful.

I think he's misguided and a very angry person. I'd like to see what he'd actually accomplish if he got some therapy, because he's obviously very intelligent and probably isn't living up to his full potential.

I was under the impression that after his last album he was calling it quits/retiring, but I see he's done a single with Akon.

What's up with that? :hmm:

Redjake 12-04-2006 02:27 PM

I think he's a great rapper and an even greater business person. His albums have made him millions of dollars. He can also act. See 8 Mile for reference.

His albums are usually geared to offend someone, but that's the point. It sells. And he does it very well. Offending people, I mean!

CandleInTheDark 12-04-2006 05:20 PM

He is on a totally different level than his cohorts (Dre, 50 cent, Lloyd Banks, etc.) and most other mainstream rappers in terms of pure skill. He can rhyme and he has excellent delivery. On lyrical content and subject matter, he's just the same old stuff gangsta/pop stuff. He can freestyle though!

biznatch 12-05-2006 01:38 PM

I used to like Eminem, but after something like ten songs talking about how fucked up his family is, it gets really boring and uninventive. I tend to listen to other hip-hop artists, and his new work (like that single with akon, and "ass like that") doesn't deserve to be part of the genre of Hip-Hop.
Some of my favorite albums are Black Star from Kweli and Mos Def, and the old Common Sense albums (he calls himself Common now, and does Gap commercials...*shivers*).
I think Eminem is like the rest of his "team" (G-Unit and all). They try to display an image which might appeal to some, but I get really tired of it.

opus123 12-14-2006 01:11 AM

I like two of his songs. Of all the rap that I have on my computer, his stuff is probably in 14th place in number of times played. (I like ITunes that way as it tracks how many times a song is played.)

He gave Elton John a hug after his duet with him. So he seems like a reformed homophobe, so that's good.

8 Mile was a so so film. But worth to see it for free probably even though it probably has no reality basis. I thought for sure that 8 Mile would be something I would hate, but I checked it out of the library and I watched it all. I liked Ludacris in the movie Crash much better. But a lot of lyrics mean nothing to me since I grew up in white bread Idaho, but rap is mostly inner city stuff and probably is mostly true to life.

Jonathan
