Favourite, most reviled, or surprising "lifts"

I was listening to Internet radio, and a Chicago song came on: "25 or 6 to 4." I've never heard the song in my life, or so I thought.....

I recognized the riff because Green Day lifted it for "Brain Stew."

This reminded me of an experience I had when I was listening to disco (I know, I know...). I heard a bridge that was lifted for a popular summer song. Here it is.

Andrea True Connection's iconic disco song "More, More, More" (Listen to the bit from 2:20 to 2:30)

Now listen to the same bit throughout this popular song:

Now I knew it was a sample; I just didn't realize it was from that song.

  • Feel free to include your favourite or most reviled samples/lifts as well.

I shared a similar playlist regarding musical samplings; let me find it for contextual relevance's sake.

Fiddlesticks. I just now realized the original link, ergo: the playlist, replete with details and artists, has been deleted. I need to check and see if I might have uploaded this musical mix anywhere else. For now, though, just disregard my hidden post.

There is this video I found awhile ago, not really surprising as they are DJs.

When I first heard "Stronger" I was pissed he sampled Daft Punk (as he is a douche) but I guess it got them some airplay in the states.

Queen's "Under Pressure" being sampled by "Ice Ice Baby" threw me for a loop, I thought my classic rock station was playing Vanilla Ice for a min.

Also, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kid Rock sampling Warren Zevon "Werewolves of London" was a big surprise.

PS. FUCK YOU BG. Now "Steal my sunshine" is in my head and won't go away. Assmaster.

How about Stevie Ray Vaughan, who reused his own riff, which was itself lifted?

We have Rude Mood here:

Whose signature riff reappears at a much slower pace in the intro to Pride And Joy:

Both of which are based on the riff from Hopkin's Sky Hop, by Lightnin' Hopkins:

Hopkins was an early blues player from Houston, and heavily influenced SRV. He acknowledged the connection between Hopkin's Sky Hop and Rude Mood himself.

And all of them are really just a 12 bar blues progression, which shows up everywhere in contemporary music, from blues to rock to jazz.

Tributes, homages, samples and plain ripoffs. Everything that's done has been done before.

I'm not a musical genius, but I'm pretty sure AC/DC lifts its own shit for every song.

And somehow it works. Everybody loves AC/DC.

It'd seem Greenday are really quite shameless.

Here's one video to combine both the original and the steal....

Kookaburra (the children's song) contained in the flute riff for Men At Work's "Down Under"
