Metal Anyone?

So are there any metalheads around here? I'm not so much into the newer nu-metal stuff, I'm more of an old school NWOBHM and Thrash guy.
What say you all?
METAL ANYONE?!?!?!?!?!?

j/k

...

Are we talking main stream, easily digestible metal? I've got everything by Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. Big fan of that kinda stuff.

"Angel of Death" fits perfectly in a ready room prior to heading out to play GI Joe.

...

Minor threadjack:

Genres are so hard to define. I listen to "horror" music... but the "punk" versus "rock" versus "metal" category always throws me off.

Horror Punk = Nim Vind, Blitzkid, Monstabob
Horror Rock = Rosedales, Mister Monster, American Werewolves
Horror Metal = Balzac (?)

I reckon you could call it mainstream, like the big four of thrash, but what is mainstream now was not so mainstream "Back in the Day" (I think my age is showing!!)

I more a Maiden, Priest, Saxon, Scorpions, Riot, Raven, Anvil sort a guy, but I'm also really big into Metallica, Megadeth, Death Angel and ANTHRAX (NFL!!!!). I've been all over the Britsh heavy metal since I heard British Steel and Iron Maiden (debut album) in the same week.

I like my metal performed a cappella. Van Canto is 4 male vocalists, 1 female vocalist, and a drummer. I've mentioned them before here, but what the heck...

I'm a long-time Metallica fan, but almost exclusively their pre-mid-'90s stuff. But by the '90s, I had already started branching out in musical tastes and went on to grunge/alternative pretty hardcore, which included acts such as Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

After that, I became interested in blended (fusion) sounds. As far as my return to a more metal sound after my grunge orgy, I started to get into the metal that blended stoner rock, southern rock, or other rock genres. I think maybe grunge ruined straighahead thrash metal for me.

A few examples of what that entailed included Corrosion of Conformity (my favourite metal band), Alabama Thunderpussy, Eyehategod, Clutch, and Kyuss.

Cool--I'm a big fan of "grunge", but I still think Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger IS a heavy metal album!!

Also--Mastodon--Crack the Skye is amazing!

Below are some perennial favorites.

Agalloch - Folk metal, heavily layered and focused on the beauty of nature. I visualize harsh tundra, deep forests, and majestic mountains from their music. Both The Mantle and Pale Folklore are killer albums. Sample song (two parts):

Bathory - Viking metal, extremely atmospheric, chugging guitars. The pacing builds up to these instrumental and vocal crescendos that send you like a flaming arrow into the skull of a fleeing peasant, Norse warriors hacking limbs and torching homes in the background. I recommend Hammerheart. Sample song:

Blind Guardian - Power metal as it should be, with a vocalist that doesn't sound castrated. Nightfall In Middle-Earth is the most epic album that I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Soaring choruses, smoldering electric guitarwork, and emotionally charged lead vocals. Sample song:

Mastodon - Raw, paranoid, and utterly captivating. Crushing bass, blistering guitars, aggressive vocals. Leviathan is their masterpiece. Sample song:

Other recommendations:

Please don't quote this post, due to its already massive size.

I grew up on metal. My mom has always been into 80's hair metal, and my dad has always been into 80's thrash metal.

My favorite bands from the earliest of my years until my teens, when I got into punk rock, were Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Green Jello, Judas Priest, and Anthrax, as well as bands like Motley Crue, Def Leppard (Yes, back in the day I loved me some Rock of Ages...), Poison, Skid Row, Guns'n'Roses, Queensryche, and Tesla.

I still love me some thrash or butt rock to this day.
_____________

There's only one newer metal band I can think of off hand that I like:

I don't care if they're a cartoon band; they're fucking rad!

DETHKLOK RULES!!!

No, seriously. I clean my house to this stuff. My cats hate it; they run upstairs the moment "Murmaider" starts. But this stuff is quality, and it's funny.

I cannot believe nobody has mentioned the only true Kings of Metal.

Not many other metal bands got Orson Welles to deliver their dialogue.

I like lots of different metal. But I chose these two for not being mentioned yet and because they're kind of the epitome of metal.

Of course they do!

Funniest gig I ever attended was Gwar!

They sounded shit, the venue was shit, the costumes were ridiculous, and the songs atrocious, but it was pure fun and everyone left smiling.

I accidentally stopped by my local record store during a GWAR signing session. It was kind of sad, two guys without costumes or makeup, sitting at the table with no one stopping by, and ear-bleeding music flooding out of the sound system.

That sounds very Spinal Tap-y...and quite sad as well.

Like most music I like metal when its done well...but like most music its hard to stumble on a band that is good when you have so many essentially just doing the same thing. I still have a fondness for some of the stuff I grew up on but I haven't gotten into too many new metal bands in the last 10 years or so. I don't know maybe I'm just getting old but when I the same short riff repeated 1000 times while somebody barks over it I just get bored.

Anyway when done right (ie the way I like it) I think metal is just fantastic.

Just saw Mastodon and Between the Buried and Me the other night. Epic concert. Mastodon played the entire Crack the Skye album followed by 10 or 11 of their older songs. My neck is killing me....

See them this tour if you have a chance!

Need to post lots of stuff so I can read my messages.
Had some metal moments in my life.
Saw Metallica 5 times.
Lost interest in them when they became mainstream
I now cannot hear very well, as a result, but
enjoyed the ride.

My definitions could be a bit on the broad side, including a bit too much in the genre, but see if this makes sense: rock is hard and everything, but its lyrics use likenesses and emotions, even poetry. Metal's lyrics are much harder, in a physical sense, and the descriptions used to communicate its message are literal and to the point.
My simple metaphor for punk will be a lit punk. It stands out by itself, and its purpose is to light lots of fireworks which are really flippin' visible for the sake of being really flippin' visible, and usually loud.
