iTunes Podcasts

What do you guys subscribe to/listen to?

I just figured out how to do this with my music too so I should be getting up on iTunes by the end of the month hopefully. That's for another post. :)

Right now i'm subbed under the electronic music section to a couple of shows. "A state of trance" "Above & Beyond" etc...

Just wondering if anyone had suggestions for other genres of podcast to check on?

Extra Life... wo0t!

Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's Smodcast is an absolute must for any even remote Kevin Smith fan. It is by far his greatest work.

I used to listen to the WoW Insider Show but they recently changed hosts and it somehow lost it's charm. For my wow fix I am currently listening to the instance. I also listen to Filmsack. Both are produced by Scott Johnson who is the guy behind Extra Life.

I listen to the DND pdocast when it features the penny arcade and pvp cartoonists playing a campaign.

And finally I listen to The Movielicious because Patrick is awesome.

I've started to listen to these, in addition to PodCastle, which is the fantasy short story one. I'm enjoying them all so far.

I also started to listen to Writing Excuses by Brandon Sanderson, Howard Tayler, and Dan Wells. It's a podcast both highly entertaining and informative, as they cover many aspects of fiction writing on the backdrop of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. Despite the genre slant, though, there are many generally great writing tips. They really seem to know their stuff, and are hilarious in that lovable geeky sort of way.

Here's an e-mail I recently prepared for a friend:

Nerdery

Penny Arcade podcast - the penny arcade guys while they write the comic - hardly ever updates:
Downloadable Content, The Penny Arcade Podcast - Download free podcast episodes by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins on iTunes.

ExtraLifeRadio - three dudes talking about nerd stuff - I really like it! They also do "The Instance" a WOW podcast - yucch!
ExtraLife Radio, with Scott Johnson - Download free podcast episodes by myextralife@gmail.com on iTunes.

A Life Well Wasted - Robert Ashley's radio program style show, kind of about gaming - really well done:
A Life Well Wasted - Download free podcast episodes by Robert Ashley on iTunes.

Comedy

You Look Nice Today - a few guys riffin' - I've really laughed at this sometimes, other times a bit bland, but try it!
You Look Nice Today - Download free podcast episodes by You Look Nice Today on iTunes.

Economics

NPR Planet Money - don't let the topic intimidate you - economics for the layperson - I wish I had discovered this earlier in my life... I'd have felt more prepared for dealing with my money and "getting" the economy (secret answer: it is all kind of crazy and senseless):
NPR: Planet Money Podcast - Download free podcast episodes by National Public Radio on iTunes.

Science

Radiolab - This will blow your mind - this is the radio show that most aspire to be like (2nd most) - be sure to listen to the full length episodes:
WNYC's Radiolab - Download free podcast episodes by Jad Abumrad & Robert Krulwich on iTunes.

Finally...

This American Life - the king of all radio/podcasts - a must hear:
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/M...t?id=201671138

UPDATE: Extralife radio is now defunct! Scott Johnson decided to end the podcast in favour of his other ones (the Instance, etc.)

I heard that podcast last night.

I just subscribed to Current Geek. I hope if fills some of that gap.

Okay, I just started listening to The Tolkien Professor podcast. I just finished with the intro podcast and it's already blowing my mind.

The podcast is by a professor of medieval literature who has been a huge Tolkien fan since he was a kid. It's essentially a series of lectures that examines the works of Tolkien, while keeping the author's intentions in mind. In other words, this is the next best thing to taking an actual college course on Tolkien.

Letters and other materials written by Tolkien are used to support the idea of approaching the works by focusing on the stories themselves, rather than taking biographical (author-centric) or allegorical (i.e. about World War 2) approach, or sifting through and dissecting them to find all the source materials: his stories were generally meant to evoke history and how it applies to who we are even today. He meant for us to take them in as a whole and enjoy them as the stories they are.

But don't take my word for it, listen at least to the introduction and hear it for yourself.

What I also like about this guy is that he provides an interesting defense of fantasy as "real/serious" literature via Tolkien's views on the subject. So if you are a fan of fantasy or sci-fi, that in itself makes the introduction at least worth a listen.

Enjoy.

I'm a die-hard NPR buff. Their "Most E-Mailed Stories" podcast is an excellent way to hear the interesting tidbits without getting just-the-facts news you've already read. I'm also a fan of "This American Life" and "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me."

Frosstbyte 03-09-2010 08:22 AM

Baraka, what a brilliant find! I'm addicted to them already.

Goldie Wilson 03-16-2010 04:19 AM

I'm a devotee of the series of Slate.com podcasts that are released throughout the week, especially the Political Gabfest and Hang Up and Listen, the sports podcast. They're nicely conversational, and make me feel smarter as I'm walking the dogs.

I've been listening to the Adam Corolla podcast for a while now, too. I was never a giant fan of his, but he's finally found a medium that fits him PERFECTLY. Really entertaining.
