Music in your collection that you're ashamed to admit you own

I have a large desk at home. On most of the shelving, I keep all my cd's that I've collected over the years. The other day, I was just sitting and browsing all that was there. I don't know how I ended up with some of this crap...

Will Hoge
Spice Girls - unopened
Romeo & Juliet Soundtrack - unopened
Billie Myers
Leann Rimes *sigh*
Jimmy Buffet - unopened
Jewel
Green Day - I hate them. I want to kick the lead singer in the face
Travis Tritt
'The Natural Sounds Of The Wilderness'
Juice Newton lol
Wynonna Judd
Nelly
Richard Marx :/
Tom Cochrane
Steve Winwood

DaniGirl 07-19-2009 11:56 AM

98 degrees
NSYNC
backstreet boys
All those silly boy bands that I listened to in Jr High
I also have a couple CDs from bands at my high school that really suck.

Punk.of.Ages 07-19-2009 12:19 PM

Why would you be ashamed that you own Jimmy Buffet?!
***********************************************

I'm not ashamed of anything I own, even though I constantly take shit from my friends over a lot of the music I own. Just cause I'm a punk doesn't mean I limit myself to just punk music.

The way I see it, if I own it, I dig it. I really don't give a shit what anyone thinks of my taste in music.

Daniel_ 07-19-2009 12:40 PM

I have quite a few albums that I wouldn't trumpet from the rooftops, but I'm not ashamed of them.

Xerxys 07-19-2009 12:45 PM

Nickelback.

Manic_Skafe 07-19-2009 01:15 PM

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...XL._SS500_.jpg

http://ak.buy.com/db_assets/large_im...6/60481416.jpg

I'm not embarrassed for having these but if I hadn't received them as gifts during high school, I probably wouldn't own them. It was a good intro to a lot of punk bands I hadn't heard of but these only get a spin every few years.

Punk.of.Ages 07-19-2009 02:20 PM

Haha, Punk-O-Rama...

I have them all.

mixedmedia 07-19-2009 02:28 PM

Like POA, I'm not ashamed of any of the music I own. Even though I have The Carpenters, John Denver, Bobby Vinton and Olivia Newton-John.

fuck all who don't like it. :)

PonyPotato 07-19-2009 02:46 PM

I am with POA and mixedmedia. I'll listen to all of the music I have, and in front of my music snob friends, too.

The ones I get shit for include:
Backstreet Boys
NSync
Lady Gaga
Rascall Flatts
Spice Girls
...and so on.

cellophanedeity 07-19-2009 03:00 PM

I secretly love the new Jonas Brother's song. Good Christians singing about how, despite their meds, they're still feeling paranoid.

So good.

Also, I love Hanson and no one can stop me.

roachboy 07-19-2009 03:02 PM

there's stuff i don't like in my collection but nothing i'm embarrased about.

on the other hand, i have lots of stuff like this:

now someone might say that's just awful and the clip is dreadful as well.
i just laugh.

I went through a serious JB phase that's since expired. I'm also left with a tattoo to mark this period of time in my life. Although it was all fun, I did a lot of stupid shit then. So I suppose it's more of a personal thing for me.

As far as all the others though, I hang my head. Skeet shooting comes to mind if it's at all possible.

SSJTWIZTA 07-19-2009 08:49 PM

i catch shit for listening to a few of the following:

MGMT
The Lids
Len
Cars Can Be Blue
Screaming Sneakers
The Suspicions
The Soviettes
The Mountain Goats

Plan9 07-19-2009 08:53 PM

...but I got rid of that Ace of Base tape. :shy:

Willravel 07-19-2009 09:17 PM

"Hiru no Tsuki" by Akino Arai
I had the mandatory Anime phase like most other Bay Area teens. "Hiru no Tsuki" was the theme at the end of Outlaw Star.

"I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis
Don't ask me why but I love this song.

I was going to post Pinafore and Penzance, but I'm proud to enjoy Gilbert and Sullivan.

"Hide and Seek" Imogen Heap
The first time I heard this, it was on an SNL Digital Short. I laughed at first, but the damned song grew on me.

NOFX yes Punk.of.ages that is what I said.

Plan9 07-19-2009 09:31 PM

It's okay. You can ween yourself off NOFX if you maintain a steady diet of Op Ivy and sobriety.

FelixP 07-19-2009 11:54 PM

I have a simon and garfunkel best of CD...

CinnamonGirl 07-20-2009 12:29 AM

I love my cd collection. Everything from ABBA to the Vandals. I take a lot of shit for a lot of stuff I listen to, but I'm not ashamed. :)

...that said, I DO have a Taylor Swift cd. It was a Christmas gift from a cousin who based this decision entirely on the fact that I like Kenny Chesney. Um...yeah. She meant well.

One of my biggest fears would be having to listen to that song on a loop.

LordEden 07-20-2009 04:42 AM

I'm not ashamed of my music tastes, it's weird and eclectic, but I listen to what I love. I've noticed that I go through phases with music, I'm in my Happy-Go-Lucky music phase now, with heavy Irish seasonings.

I have two friends who are metal heads and once owned a CD shop. They give me HELL over my music tastes. I took 3 weeks of shit over going to the No Doubt concert a month ago. Here are some of the bands I listen to that they give me crap about.

Jimmy Buffett
No Doubt (Pretty much all 3rd wave Ska bands I listen too)
Beach Boys
Blink 182
Flogging Molly
Garth Brooks
Presidents of the United States of America
Daft Punk
Loreena McKennitt
Eve 6
Soul Coughing
Gaelic Storm

I know of Outlaw Star by name only, and I have not yet seen an episode of the show thus far. Initially, I thought it was a 90s arcade game, but I knew it also could have been an anime. What gave me an inkling of this knowledge was an obscure but now favorite album of mine that had covered this theme that let me know of its existence at all.

Oh, and this is the only version of the theme that I have listened to before your post above: Hiiru no Tsuki

and the album from which it stems: CDBaby | Rayzd | Just Fade Away: Music of Cowboy Bebop and Other Sounds for the Otaku

Glory's Sun 07-20-2009 05:50 AM

My Shane Mcgowan (Pogues) obsessed friend who thinks that Flogging Molly/Dropkick Murphies should figure out what kind of music they want to play and stop playing shitty rock/irish hybrid music.

He sucks, so when he's bartending at my favorite dive bar, I play the whole Drunken Lullabies CD off the jukebox. $10 bucks to play it, but watching him get more and more pissed off and not being able to do anything about it is worth it. I love watching Elitist Music Jerks have to listen to music they hate. Gives me a warm happy feeling in my tummy.

squeeeb 07-20-2009 12:52 PM

i secretly listen to Freedom by george michaels when i'm running or cycling, it gets me pumped for some reason. i am ashamed, but i'll keep doing it.

my shame also lies in the fact that i like the song mmm bop, it's catchy as fuck.

I think you need new friends. Everyone on that list kicks ass (well, I don't know Soul Coughing. But everyone else, definitely.)

Martian 07-20-2009 01:18 PM

Some of the highlights of my list:

Journey
Ben Folds
Cheap Trick
John Mayer
George Michael
Queen
Otis Redding
Prince
Meatloaf
Jimmy Eat World

Etc etc.

This all goes alongside things like John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Mercyful Fate, The Ramones, Colin Hay, Tom Waits and Iggy Pop. It runs the gamut, but I'm not ashamed of any of it.

CinnamonGirl 07-20-2009 01:21 PM

Ooooh...Martian, I like your list, too. I need to come visit and raid a few music collections, judging from this thread :)

Oh man Soul Coughing is the shit! Cartoon network had these animated music videos to old cartoons and Soul Coughing was on two of them (one was a great Bettie Boop Cartoon). For some reason youtube took them down. Here is the only one I could find, ignore the stupid video and listen to the song.

You're ashamed to admit you own Queen and Prince? Otis Redding??

Jetée 07-20-2009 03:41 PM

A good portion of the people are not understanding the premise of this thread as is outlined by the OP: namely, stating albums and/or artists you are too ashamed to admit you own in real life. It's already a topic at odds with itself to begin with, but when adding in the factor that some, like myself, don't really find faults in what they prefer to listen to, it is just a listing of names that may seem odd.

I'd even offer the supposed purpose of why even participate in the thread if you are not, ashamed at least in part, of what was once all the rage in 1997, or the fact that you still listen to a band that is now historically seen as a laughingstock? I guess it's our way of trying to fit out opinion to what was offered in the initial examples': music that you may feel awkward listening to still, and perhaps are made to feel even moreso when friends find out. That's the way I see it anyhow.

I'm not ashamed of any of it. I just picked some of the names that I was most likely to get made fun of for. Of course, it's contextual; in some circles, it would be my KRS-One or Beastie Boys.

Hmm... Ani Difranco's new one. I acted based on her more than decent track record, but friggin hell I wish I had vetted this one first. Such boring lifeless crap on Red Letter Year. Same with the newest from Gomez and the Decemberists... I really gotta preview more. That's my source of shame - buyer's remorse. Thankfully, I was 2 for 5 with Animal Collective and Regina Spektor saving the day.

I see what you mean, I suppose...I just was not aware that those artists were laughed at by anyone. I'm pretty out of touch, though. I don't even know who many of the bands listed here are, lol.

Bill O'Rights 07-21-2009 06:26 AM

I make no apologies for anything that I listen to. But, a few of the CDs, in my collection, that may raise an eyebrow, or two, are;

Christina Aguilera (I like her Back to Basics album)
Barry Manilow
ABBA
Carly Simon
Peter Frampton
Donna Summer
Diana Ross
Gladys Knight & The Pips
Bee Gees
Four Tops
Commodores
Kool & The Gang
Mulberry Lane
Glenn Miller
The Andrews Sisters
Artie Shaw
Frank Sinatra
Dean Martin
Chuck Mangione

I saw Meatloaf mentioned here, somewhere. Really? Meatloaf? Bat Out Of Hell was my signature album back in the day. I've owned it on LP, 8-track, cassette and CD. To this day it's still pretty close to the top of my pile.

Punk.of.Ages 07-21-2009 07:41 AM

So, looking through my CDs, I decided I do own one band I'm slightly ashamed of.

Dragon Force...

None of these surprise me. You're totally in the acceptable age range, dude. I would actually be pissed if you didn't have a Kool & The Gang album. That's like required Bill O'Rights listening right there. Yeah, it would really hurt my slice of reality. I am glad to see your list. It validates me in many ways.

Halx 07-21-2009 10:14 AM

I have, at one point in my life, owned a Chumbawumba CD.

snowy 07-21-2009 10:31 AM

The only CD I'm ashamed to admit I own (somewhere) is the Rembrandts' LP. What a waste of money.

I have a variety of pop music that other people have listed here; I am not afraid to admit that I enjoy pop music (such as that produced by the Spice Girls, Take That!, and Boyzone, amongst others). Sometimes you just need to bounce a little.

i think they kick some ass, i've seen them a few times since they started playing at the warped tour years and years ago, when the warped tour was cool. reminds me of old skool pogues, before shane mcgowan got a colostomy bag. and they are pretty cool folks, very friendly and down to earth when i met them at the warped tour. (how many more times can i get the words "warped tour" in this?)

Speed_Gibson 07-27-2009 10:23 PM

There is nothing that I am "ashamed" of, and my collection covers Prince, Glenn Miller/Benny Goodman, Sinatra, Spice Girls, J. Giels (bought the LP for the "covergirl" song), some odd music from King Crimson with an truly awesome cover art (chose that for the art alone), Celtic music, Boy George, Sons of the Pioneers, Etc. Etc.
Everything from a recording of Nickeledeons from the 1890's (1960's LP) that a no doubt deceased gentleman back east restored, to classical, to current pop drek. Some songs get very little if any playing time but you never know what mood will strike.
edit: the most annoying CD in the house (no LPS come to mind) is that freaking annoying Crazy Frog cd that my 7 year old likes so much - I would rather hear an endless loop of 60's country than that CD.

mixedmedia 07-28-2009 02:54 AM

biznatch 07-28-2009 11:27 AM

Someone once gave me a Will Smith album because they heard I liked rap.
Other than that...Oh, right I did have that No doubt album, but I'm not embarrassed by that, just have caught shit for it. That song "ex-girlfriend" was really catchy, and Gwen Stefani was hot.
Oh, right, and what I hear is the worse Metallica album, Re-Load. It wouldn't be sad if it weren't the only Metallica album I had.
Fuck, I just remembered I had a Korn phase. Jesus fucking christ.

YaWhateva 07-28-2009 11:50 AM

3 limp bizkit albums (oh wow that shameful)
Load, Re-Load, Garage Inc. (Everything older is great)
Korn albums
Macy Gray albums (not ashamed of them, but i get shit for liking Macy Gray)
Lily Allen (same as Macy Gray)

boognishd 08-17-2009 07:35 PM

Lily Allen - Alright Still

Skitto 08-17-2009 09:25 PM

I'm the proud owner of John Mayer's Where the Light Is, Coldplay's Viva la Vida,
Radiohead's Amnesiac (which is actually sort of hypnotically good.)

but the only album I'm ashamed to own is the horribly recorded mass product copy of the Free Tibet concert series. Junk, it wasn't worth half of the 2 dollars I paid for it.

thirdsun 09-12-2009 12:35 PM

I used to get no end of grief from friends who discovered Carpenters records in my album collection.

As a teenager, I fell in love with Karen's voice, especially when she gets down toward the bottom of her range. Her voice is just so smooth and effortless and down right sexy.

i can't even download it, it's so top secret. but i have a couple streaming playlists of "Owl City" which is verbatim Deathcab For Cutie with slightly better beats and lyrics. I love the bleeps and bloops, but I intermittently want to beat myself up and take my own lunch money when i hear it.

Yeah, don't sing "The Sign" to her, or she'll stop speaking to you for the rest of the evening. (or at least until she forgets that she's not speaking to you.)

I recently remembered that I bought Britney's first cd. It sucked, and I ended up giving it away... but I bought it after hearing "Baby, One More Time." To my credit (c'mon, I get SOME credit, right?) the cashier had no idea who she was. "Britney Spears? What kind of music is that?" Me: "Um...kinda poppy?"

I just recalled that I received a huge amount of grief from my friends when they discovered my Boney M 8-track in the car. They played it through once, especially rocking on to Brown Girl In The Ring before they chucked it out the window. For those of you who know Toronto, this happened on Yonge St at Carleton. A few blocks north, there was a tap on the window, and a cop on a horse was holding it and said that I had unfortunately lost something and would I like it back. I still have that 8-track, but no player.

Tesla 10-25-2009 12:52 PM

I don't have much, in fact I have almost none, of the CDs, I prefer digital format. And talking about my mp3 collection, there is much crap (about 150Gb) that filled my HD which don't listen. That's mostly because I work in radio so I need to have all sorts of music. I maybe would be ashamed of my country's folk music that's disgusting, but my friends know I don't listen that.
