Music you are ashamed to like.

My roomate and I had a college radio show back in the day, and one show we did "Songs we are ashamed to like." It was 3 hours of music that we liked but would never admit it.

So what musicians/songs are you ashamed to like?

I'll start:

I really like George Michael. Not his dance tracks, but the rest. The jazzier stuff on Listen Without Prejudice and Older.

I also like some tracks from pop groups. "Goodbye" by Spice Girls, "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera to name a few.

Oh, and I like Neil Diamond.

Peetster 07-03-2003 06:44 AM

The silver vibes of Lionel Hampton. He was in Benny Goodman's band, then struck out solo.

God of Thunder 07-03-2003 07:06 AM

Just about anything from Duran Duran.

Did I just type that??????

Oh well, it's out there now. :hmm:

Story goes that my sister was (and still is) a big fan. So, by default, I got to hear a lot of it.

Saw them live in 1897 during "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" tour and was actually quite impressed.

Pyrate 07-03-2003 08:01 AM

Ayumi Hamasaki. If you were to look at this thugged out everyday yout' and then listen to the tape playing in my Walkman, you would probably erupt in hearty bellows.

I also like SClub. They had moves and they had voices. I was actually sad when they split, but I made fucking well sure no one saw my grief.

Um, ignore all of the above, I didn't say any of it.

:p

Nyenrodian 07-03-2003 08:04 AM

Andrea Bocelli
Huey Lewis & the News :D

Jadey 07-03-2003 08:56 AM

I've started listening to Country music (All becuase of a WOMAN!). Also, I'm another Duran Duran fan. They were my first favorite band back when I was in grade school.

TIO 07-03-2003 09:03 AM

Eminem. I hate the genre, and I hate what he is and what he stands for, but the bastard just keeps on releasing great songs!

They put out an album of all covers songs a few years ago and I play it quite a bit.

Holy hell, do I feel you on that one my friend.

But aside from now LOVING country music, I'm also very ashamed to admit that I quite like Justin Timberlake as a solo artist.

im so alone

viveleroi0 07-03-2003 10:28 AM

spice girls, a few songs by eminem are the ones that come to mind. My girlfriend thinks I love britney spears (sure shes cute, but I don't love her - I love my g/f) so I cannot admit to her that I like some britney songs,

ninety09 07-03-2003 11:49 AM

I like a few songs from SClub7 and Christina Aguilera

Eggy 07-03-2003 12:47 PM

blink-182... wow, that's really the only one on my playlist. Some of the most immature musicians I know of, but they can write a catchy melody, put on a hilarious live show, and are at their best when they put out the occasional serious song.

Hal Incandenza 07-03-2003 01:45 PM

Lots of Madonna. "Live to Tell" is unbelievably great.
Def Leppard and lots of other eighties hair bands. I saw an embarrassing number of them live, too--Poison, White Lion, Dokken, Tesla, Great White, even Winger. Kill me now.

I am ashamed to admit I like them, but I think they are actually fairly talented:

Tupac
Notorious BIG
Snoop Dogg
NWA
Slick Rick

bundy 07-03-2003 07:41 PM

I didn't say that I liked them; I just said that I saw them live. Of course, "Seventeen" wasn't too bad--NO! WAIT! I DIDN'T MEAN THAT! I LOVE SLAYER! :(

wakelagger 07-04-2003 11:20 AM

Much Music's French Kiss has made me love some french pop.
Disturbing, yet catchy.

Gortexfogg 07-04-2003 11:52 AM

Neil Diamond
Bing Crosby
and worst of all, Hanson (it's good stuff, really)

CAN_skate 07-04-2003 08:37 PM

Kriss Kross.
Makes me wanna jump, jump.

kod 07-04-2003 08:47 PM

Anyone remember the Skatenigs? Really 'orrid rap-industrial-metal crossover, before that was common. Brain-damagingly stoopid, but great fun.

The Atomic Boy 07-04-2003 08:53 PM

In my darkest moments I have been known to listen to Vanilla Ice's single best song "Ninja Rap".

cinnles 07-04-2003 09:03 PM

shinji 07-05-2003 01:59 PM

i like the other justin timberlake song, the one after "cry me a river." i forget what it was called.

i love duran duran. with so many people in this thread who like them, i can't imagine why we should be ashamed of it. maybe there's more to duran duran than we give them credit for.

allister. too goddamn catchy. i hate poppunk.

snoop dogg. i don't even know why i like him.

Actually, I've been accused of that by several people.

[correction]I saw them in 1987 [/correction]
Thanks for the catch (and laugh)

phredgreen 07-05-2003 07:23 PM

i don't think i'm ashamed of anything i lisen to, but it is a little odd for me to like as many timberlake songs as i do... whatever.

Spektr 07-05-2003 07:25 PM

Ani DiFranco. Despite the fact that she hates me and all other men, I think her music is amazing

Meaty Urologist 07-05-2003 11:14 PM

Tatu, but just because of the whole lesbian thing, I swear.

grapeape 07-07-2003 08:31 AM

i was a closeted duran duran fan in high school.....now that i'm all grown up, i've come out of the closet with it. (then i return to the closet with my spice girls cd.)

JohnnyRock 07-07-2003 11:59 AM

Ok, I'm as metal as metal can be and I don't---WON'T--own anything by these "artists" but when they come on the radio or a movie, party, etc...I don't turn and run:
The Fixx
The Beach Boys
Wings and...
Supertramp [God help me...!!!!]

monkeydriven 07-07-2003 12:46 PM

Christina Aguilera

Schwan 07-07-2003 01:06 PM

It would have to be Blonide, though I admired Debbie Harry as a fine, fine woman before that. Then along came a girl, and she's nuts about the music and I'm nuts about her, so things start working and I'm a Blondie fan, and ashamed deeply.

izzzzy 07-07-2003 01:23 PM

im pretty much a dyed in the wool oldies junkie ,but i also like some of the newer rock hitsand i like jimmy buffet , however the one tape that i only play when im alone is "tattooed heart"by aaron neville.i dont know what it is about his voice but it relaxes me. i aquired it at a yard sale for 50 cents. best 50 cents i ever spent on music.

mercury-hg 07-07-2003 01:46 PM

slipknot... can't bring myself to bring one of their albums up to the counter, no matter how much i want to.

RelaX 07-07-2003 01:52 PM

I listen to Britney Spears and M2M sometimes.. shhhhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone. This message will self-destruct in 5...4....3...2....1....

sngx1275 07-07-2003 03:38 PM

Jewel. doesn't quite fit with my harder alternative collection.

hotzot 07-07-2003 09:23 PM

ABBA..... I'm so ashamed!:O

sadistikdreams 07-08-2003 06:39 PM

Marilyn Manson

Derwood 07-08-2003 07:13 PM

I'll add to my own thread with Terrance Trent D'Arby. I have one of his albums that I just love! (The one with "Kiss me There" on it)

Cujo 07-08-2003 07:53 PM

HAHA! I really hate to confess this, but I still own two releases by Honeymoon Suite (their debut album from 1984 and The Big Prize from 1985) and will on occasion throw them in my tape deck. Man I can’t believe I admitted that.

The Americans in the crowd will most likely remember them as the band that did the title track for Mel Gibson's Lethal Weapon in 1987 and thats all you should remember them for cause everything else they did mostly sucked.

Double D 07-09-2003 07:31 PM

Firstly, there is nothing wrong with liking David Bowie.

I am chagrined to admit tho', that when I need a blast from the past I'll put on some Bee Gees.
Their lyrics really suck, but their harmonies are pheneomenal.

Schwan 07-10-2003 05:09 AM

Oooh, I just remebered. I like the older songs by Roxette and they tend to play them on the radio often these days. Ah, the early days bring a tear to my eye... oh wait, they don't.

absorbentishe 07-10-2003 07:03 AM

Alright, I admit it, I hated all the 80's Top 40 stuff, but still had to listen.. i.e. Duran Duran, Culture Club, etc. Also the old school rap, like P.E. NWA, etc. Now I just can't like Avril, or Christina, or Spice Girls, but I still listen

AHHH... I didn't just say that, did I?

Dr.Who 07-10-2003 08:48 AM

Duran Duran & A-Ha.

gibingus 07-10-2003 11:18 AM

i got all my shame removed by a chemical peel.

once all of my judgemental tendencies disapated, i cranked up herb alpert and the tijuana brass whipped cream and other delights, mixed a tom collins and felt a whole lot better.

yup

Reese 07-11-2003 04:21 AM

I like alot of music even pop, but i get burned out on it quickly because it played so much.

Some songs I wouldn't readily admit to liking, but to say that I'm ashamed isn't quite true...
Aguilera - Beautiful
Pink - Family Portrait
Sinead O'connor - Nothing Compared to you
Prince - quite a few of his songs.

That's all I can think of right now.. I don't really like digging through singers/bands I don't like to find that one good song they did :)

Donkeypuncher 07-11-2003 11:58 AM

Well... I'm not ashamed of any of the music I like. I like it and that's good enough for me.

That said, I certainly catch a lot of crap from friends about some of it.

Yeah, ok. I have Air Supply CDs. I admit it. And ummm Starland Vocal Band.

=)

hambone 07-12-2003 12:36 AM

I used to actually like Britney...come to think of it, I used to eat gum right off the road, so it doesn't stand for much

Jerpitcher 07-16-2003 12:54 PM

I mostly get my kicks on megadeth or metallica, bands like that...but every once and a while I'll listen to...dare I say...Night Ranger, or The Scorpions :D

darksparkles 07-16-2003 03:33 PM

i like most of that new justin timberlake song, and i have no idea why. gah.
and i like beautiful by christina aguliera...
and actually, if i'm in the right mood almost anything from that genre will make me sing along really loudly. sometimes i like things BECAUSE they're shitty, it seems.
