Woot. Although it seems they are going to be closer to the album of the year FNM as opposed to "the real thing" or "we care a lot" FNM

How much to we care? We care a lot.

Easy! ;)

The line up for the show looks fun too.

You... wa-aaant it all... but you can't have it.

:p

That's awesome. I didn't really become a fan until after they were done. I've seen Mike Patton with Tomahawk but would love to see him back doing the FNM stuff.

Just what is that supposed to mean? First of all, it isn't FNM without Mike Patton. He propelled them into the spotlight. I've seen people say things about Mosely but I've always written it off as people just being silly.

If it is about them having Jon Hudson rather than Jim Martin, I kind of get it. I do think their best music was created with him as the guitarist but the thing is that it is just the guitarist. Yes the music is guitar driven but they aren't creating new music and none of their music is all that complicated. Any professional rock guitarist should be able to step in and get the job done.

Of all the bands that I'd like to be able to squeeze another album out of, FNM tops the list. Patton has experimented so much since the break up, it'd be very interesting to see what they'd come up with now.

I'd love to be able to see this show.

Jim Martin left over disagreements over the future music of the band, that is why I think it matters. It is not the technical part of playing a guitar that I am referring to. If he wasn't brought back in, in all likelihood that indicates that the artistic differences remain.

I like Mike Patton and love his singing, but the fact is that if I had to name the three best FNM albums, they would be the real thing, introduce yourself, and angel dust. A quick look at who wrote those songs and Martin is listed as a writer in over half the real thing songs, 2 of the angel dust songs, and 4 of the introduce yourself songs.

And I would rank Album of the Year, to which Jon Hudson helped write over half the songs, at the very bottom.

The fact that they chose Hudson over Martin to me clearly indicates more "album of the year," less "we care a lot."

I think you're reading into it too much. Jim Martin's lack of involvement has nothing to do with artistic direction. They kicked him out of the band over 15 years ago and there is no love lost between them. Hudson is the guitarist simply because he was the guy when they broke up. If it were any other reunion tour, I'd say they are probably going to play mostly what people remember them for (Real Thing, Angel Dust) but since Patton is involved who knows what they will be playing.

dippin 04-06-2009 10:50 AM

I don't think Im reading too much into it. The van halen reunion with sammy haggar played different songs than the van halen reunion with david lee roth.

In any case, my concern goes beyond what they'll play on tour. I imagine any new albums would sound more like album of the year than the real thing...

kutulu 04-06-2009 10:55 AM

I don't think they are going to be writing new material. Even if they were going to write another album I don't think AOTY would be a good reference point. First of all, none of the FNM albums with Patton singing sounded anything like its predecessor. Second, the album was composed over a decade ago, who knows what those guys will be influenced by and where they want to go if they write new material.
