10 Albums on a Desert Island
A friend posed this question to me the other day and it took me quite awhile to actually finish a list. The rules are simple. Name 10 albums you would take with you to be secluded on a desert island. It's an odd situation, I know, being stuck on a desert island and having nothing with you but 10 albums of your choosing and the required media player, but just play along. You can absolutely not use a Greatest Hits/Box Set/Anthology. Okay so go ahead and post your list! Try to be nice and not over ridicule mine.
1. Incubus - Morning View 2. Incubus - Make Yourself 3. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy 4. Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold as Love 5. The Beatles - The Beatles [White Album] 6. The Who - Tommy 7. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue 8. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon 9. Eminem - The Eminem Show 10. A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory Y'all are probably raising your eyebrows at my Incubus and rap selections but I absolutely can not live without those two incubus albums. Those two are two strains of the same mind that effectively connects with every level of my emotion. Led Zep is such a tough pick. I picked Houses of the Holy but it was kind of a three horse race between that, Physical Graffiti, and (IV, or Zoso). I almost took Physical Graffiti just for the sheer volume of LZ tracks on there, but I decided to settle on Houses of the Holy since it has the most of my favorite tracks, even though I love them all. Most people look at "Are You Experienced" as the Hendrix album to have, but honestly I love the soundscape that is Axis: Bold as Love. There is nothing like the swell of sound that is that entire album. I kind of feel the same way about Dark Side of the Moon. I love an album where I can get entirely lost in the environment that the sound provides, a very full and active album that still has its ways to be subtle. Tommy was a tough pick, and I only really picked it because of the amount of tracks. Quadrophenia was my other Who pick, along with Who's Next. The Who is another difficult pick, in like Led, I enjoy most all of their work. Miles is kind of a tricky pick for me. I have my regrets about this pick, because often I feel that Kind of Blue is way over hyped. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the more definitive albums of modern music, but I'm not exactly a fan boy that gets his panties in a bunch whenever people talk bad about Miles. This pick was mostly out of my respect for what the album is. I've transcribed solos from it (thanks High School Band Director... :grumpy:), so I have an appreciation for it, but there are definitely jazz cuts that I dig better than this album. I think I more picked this because I love jazz, but the soul of jazz can't be encompassed in one album. Generally when I listen to jazz, jam with other musicians, etc, what we do is kind of bop around with different ideas, sub genres, etc. Since this album is generally the poster child for jazz, thus it's my pick. The last two are kind of a tip to hip hop, in what I think is a very deep Eminem CD, and a very very underappreciated Tribe Called Quest. Eminem was a tough pick over Dr. Dre's Chronic 2001, but I think that The Eminem Show has more of a social critique to it, which I respect a lot, coming from a guy who found himself under a shitstorm of critique at the time, and didn't really change himself. 1. Elvis Costello - This Year's Model 2. Hot Water Music - Caution 3. Alkaline Trio - From Here to Infirmary 4. Against Me! - New Wave 5. The Lawrence Arms - The Greatest Story Ever Told 6. Dillinger Four - Midwestern Songs of the Americas 7. She & Him - Volume 1 8. Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A. 9. The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site 10. Curtis Mayfield - Superfly I would prefer The Randy Newman Songbook over Curtis Mayfield though, and the double disc The Very Best of Elvis Costello instead of This Year's Model, but no compilations are alowed, so, yeah... 1. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited 2. Tom Waits - Frank's Wild Years 3. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 4. The Beatles - The White Album 5. The Poxy Boggards - Lager Than Life 6. The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God 7. The Matches - Decomposer 8. Chris and Rich Robinson - Brothers of a Feather 9. U2 - The Joshua Tree 10. The Replacements - Tim Tough choices all along. Highway 61, as I can listen to that album for forever. Every song is incredible. Frank's Wild Years for the feeling of my favorite insane bar nights. Physical graffiti is just all over the place. It rocks, it wails, it weeps. The White Album is the same. A song for every mood there. Lager Than Life for sing along times. Singing along can get you through a lot. If I Should Fall From Grace With God is simply immortal to me. I can listen to it, and think of my relatives in Ireland, and my dad getting drunk and talking about Sligo Town. Decomposer is a really underrated album, in my opinion. I love to listen to it. Brothers of a Feather is so intimate, and has some great songs on it. It's a little melancholy in spots, but that seems fitting for the situation. The Joshua Tree is songs of hope, and songs of sorrow. Tim...well, it's the 'Mats! What more can I say. |

Well, I picked 10. It was not the easiest task, but I really enjoy the albums below.
1. Miles Davis > My Kind of Blue 2. John Coltrane > Blue Train 3. Widespread Panic> Light the Fuse and Get away 4. Radiohead > Ok Computer 5. Eric Clapton > Unplugged 6. Michael Houser > Door Harp 7. 1. Sticky Fingers -- The Rolling Stones My Dad bought me this for Hanukkah when I was 14. It was the only thing in my CD player for about a month after that. I couldn't fall asleep at my grandparents' house one night, so I popped it in my CD player and listened to it in the dark. It was like a bomb going off in my head. 5. Beginnings -- The Allman Brothers This is my answer to anyone who thinks Lynard Skynard is talented. Skynard is a joke compared to the absolute southern brilliance that is this album. The second track on this album is as fine a song as you will ever hear. 6. Kind of Blue -- Miles Davis Bought this one randomly freshman year. I was pissed about not being able to go home for the weekend, so I went to Barnes and Noble 10 minutes before it closed, called my father, and asked him "If the store closes in 5 minutes and I have one album to buy that I've never heard, what do I buy?" This was his answer. I listened to it all that weekend, didn't talk to anyone. 7. American Idiot -- Green Day This album, from top to bottom, said everything I felt about the political climate at the time. And the music was fantastic. I don't care if you didn't like it because it got played into the ground by radio stations. 5 years later, I challenge you to listen to this all the way through and not be struck by how good it actually is. 8. Chutes too Narrow -- The Shins This was my guilty pleasure in high school. I didn't tell anyone I listened to it. The lyrics in every song on this album never cease to get me when I least expect it. It reminds me of winter, and how removed from everything I felt during high school. This got me through my parent's divorce, along with a song or two off of "Oh Inverted World". 9. Blood on the Tracks -- Bob Dylan "Bringing it all back home" and "Blonde on Blonde" are brilliant to be sure, but I hated Bob Dylan until I heard this album. Nothing political, no awkward chanting. Only amazing poetry and a voice that I finally understood to be simply another instrument with which Dylan told this story. This album changed my mind about him and subsequently opened the door to his earlier work, which is, if you understand its time, place and aim, incendiary. 10. NYC Man -- Lou Reed There is no cooler human being on this planet than Lou Reed. It's not necessarily happy music, or particularly inventive. But his tone, his lyrics, and his simplicity are intoxicating if you're by yourself. High school would have been a lot different for me if I hadn't randomly discovered this guy while driving from Phoenix to California back in high school. |
