Do you think the music industry's problems would go away if CDs were reasonably priced at $10 instead of $15 to $19?

yes, absolutely!!

i'll still download (to find new music), but i will be able to purchase the albums of those artists more frequently.

some imports run anywhere up to $50......obviously i never buy imported CDs

Most definately...That's why I either shop at Best Buy (very inexpensive) or an Indie Music Store...Those guys are reasonably priced

Truth be told, when Best Buy sells CD's at $9.99, they are selling them at a loss, as they have to pay $12 each to get them from the distributor. They sell them at a loss to get you into the store to hopefully also buy other stuff

I try to buy used CD's whenever I can, I rarely pay more than $8-9 when I can find what I want. If it's something newer or harder to find, I'll break down and buy a new copy. I probably wouldn't spend much more money on music if it was cheaper, but I'd be happier that my $$$ is going further.

you can buy "used" CDs that have been played ONCE, and you can get them for $cheap. i think people get them as presents & make a copy or something. maybe rip the mp3s & sell the disk. or something.

Yeah I think that price is fair. I like buying the Punk-O-Rama CD's from Epitaph cuz they're only 8$ canadian. Once you get from $15-20, I start losing interest.

Very definately.. as album prices rose, so did the frequency of file sharing. I dont see how the industry missed that bus.

I'm not sure these two statistics are as linked as you might think. I reall believe that file sharing rose more because of a centralized network(ie. Napster) that contained music rather than having to search through many FTP sites for the music you needed. There is also the fact that within recent times the saturation of broadband connections has risen making file sharing much more appealing. I tend to agree Rockzilla in that more cds may be bought but many people would just be spending the same amount of money and having it go further.

I think the point is not to just sell the CDs cheaper, but for the labels and distributors to reduce their cut of the profits, letting the CDs get to the store at a cost of $7 or $8. Then everyone could buy whatever they want for $10, the increase in volume would keep industry profits in a similar amount (they would probably lose some, but they deserve it), and a lot fewer people would hate them anymore.

If you're into older music, you're probably already buying CDs for around $10. I'm a Bob Dylan fan and almost all his albums are like $10. It's cool music for a cool price.

I think it would help. I know I buy alot of CD's from Best Buy for 6.99 of bands that I've only heard one song from. But if I could get mst of my CD's fro $10, I think I'd buy even more than I already do. And I buy many CD's.

Do I think a lot more people would be willing to buy new CD's? Absolutely.

I very rarely buy new CD's these days due to my finances being nearly non-existant, but I am always happy to pick up cheap new CD's ($12.99 or less) when they are released or get used CD's to fill in gaps in my collection. If new releases were cheaper I would buy a lot more of them.

hell yeah ! thats the main reason I use a mac for music on the new apple store the average price for a full album is 9.99 or 99 cents a song

yep. I bought a cassette the other day. I thought cassettes would be dirt-cheap by now. It was $11.99.

I have gotten two Bad Relgion CD's at $10 each, sure beats spending hours looking for them online.

well you can buy CD's for $10...a pack of 100 cd-r's that is !

I'd defintely buy more. I also buy primarily from a used CD store, and I don't remember the last time I had to buy something new because I couldn't find it there.

If you're looking at the right bands, you can already get CDs for $7.99-$9.99. For the most part, all relatively new artists on smaller labels sell at or around that price range. Even Our Lady Peace's last release went for $8.99, and they've been around for a while now.

So, get away from big names like Creed, Linkin Park, Christina, et al. Check out Interpol, Malkmus and the Jicks, Apples in Stereo, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and/or anything on Jet Set, Dischord, or Matador records. It's good for you.

that was SUPPOSED to be one of the original advantages of the cd.....lower manufacturing costs, therefore, lower retail cost. the recording industry decided that THEY could pocket the extra change instead of passing savings to the consumer. then they became uber-greedy and raised prices through the roof to further line their pockets. FILE SHARING? they got what they deserved. *steps off of soapbox*

Actually you see a lot of punks getting LPs still not only because they're "punk" but on top of that they're a good 5-10 bucks less than their CD counterparts.

Yeah, I work at Circuit City and we get everything at cost, including CDs. The average price of a cd at cost is around 9 dollars. This is the problem... like someone else said, major retail outlets can't even get them at a good enough price to sell them to the consumer at a reasonable price. Most of the time when you see CD sales going on at Best Buy or CC, they are selling the CDs at a loss in order to draw traffic through the store.

My point is, it costs less then a dollar to manufacture the jewel case, cd, and insert. The rest goes into the pockets of producers and labels, with only a fraction going to the artist. Nowadays artists have to go platinum to make a significant profit from album sales. These days the majority of artists' revenue comes from concert ticket sales and other intangible merchandise and endorsments.

The music industry is jacked up basically... and i think it would have a tremendous impact if labels lowered their profit margins and did like old man Walton... low profit margins and high sales. I know that I would buy a SHITLOAD of cds if they were 5 to 10 bucks each, and I think a lot of other people would too.
