Jeff Healy Dies of Cancer

Jeff Healy died of cancer at the age of 41 this weekend. I was so surprised when I heard about this on Sunday night. I never heard that he was sick. What is most surprising is how quiet this has been. |
Damn, had no idea he was sick either, or had I heard he died until now. He was a hell of a guitar player, even had a spot in Roadhouse back in the day, he'll be missed.

His most famous song, although I liked his blues much better than his pop, still a decent song.
Sorry they disabled embedding for this video it says. |
Wow. Bummer. I had no idea. :(

I did not know this:
"Healey lost his sight when he was one year old, due to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes which he suffered from throughout his life and which ultimately killed him." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Healey |
I was truly saddened by his death. He was a great musician and inspiring in many ways. I really feel for his family.
|
I now regret never going to see him play. For a year, I often walked by his club (though apparently it wasn't his).... I lived in the area.

I cried for about five minutes when I got the call from my mother around 6:30 yesterday morning. Jeff played a festival quite often in my hometown and when he was here he would stay with a childhood friend (his father helps run said festival) . When I was around eight or nine he played guitar for me, which in turn inspired me to start playing. A couple of days before I put Angel Eyes back on my I-Pod and had been listening to it quite a lot. It hit me really hard as he was a friend, albeit not a close one, but one that had a very serious impact on my life. He came here two years ago with the jazz wizards to play the festival (Harvest Jazz and Blues; it's pretty prominent music festival in Eastern Canada) and we talked about his life and about what I was doing. It is still kind of hard.
In the past three days my grandmother died, my inspiration died, and my hero retired. It's a hard week lol. |
So young, so talented, so inspiring. RIP, Jeff.

Healey was an amazing talent, not only in blues but across all genres. The good die young. |
No I'm from Fredericton NB. My childhood best friend's father used to run the festival and I practically lived at their house and saw a lot of great talent pass through it. Jeff had an impact on me.
