Rich Shapero - Wild Animus

My friend and I were just listening to this album on a long drive and it’s hard to figure out what to say about it. It’s very well made with good musicianship and all, but at the same time it’s kind of…well…odd. Even though it bears some resemblance to Tom Waits or Mountain Goats (Marc Ribot does guitar work in this), there really isn’t any standard of comparison for it. It isn’t like anything I’ve heard before and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s got some haunting otherworldly lyrics about nature and shit…kinda hard for me to grasp, but then again I’m not that deep or sophisticated about music lyrics. Still, it’s fun to listen to while on the move. Even the album art is crazy. Maybe someone else here who has listened to it could offer a better explanation, or is he really just talking about animals and nature? (http://wildanimus.com/ for more info)
