Netlabels

I recently came across an excellent and free (both as in speech and as in beer) netlabel called the Kahvi Collective. Almost all their releases are in OGG format and licensed under Creative Commons, which is pretty awesome. In fact, I liked it so much that I subscribed to their RSS feed and also downloaded their entire ~7GB FTP server!

I'm sure there have to be more sites like this out there, and maybe there are even some that have something other than electronic music. Does anyone here know of any other free (as in beer) netlabels? What do you recommend? I'm mainly looking for electronic music, as I find I have a greater tolerance for the quality of free electronic music as opposed to that of other types, but if you know of netlabels that provide other genres, I'd still be interested in checking them out.

There's a huge Netlabel section at the Internet Archive:

Netlabels are one likely future for music--the free-speech/-beer model, artists producing their work for the love of it, and entirely de-commoditized art.

Wow...that's quite a large list. Honestly, a bit overwhelming. Any suggestions regarding what's good?

this is cool.
what sort of music are you interested in?
there are tons of weblabels: most that i know are pretty specialized.

o this isn't a netlabel, but it is cool:

Well, I'm most interested in electronic music (most any type). Simply put, I can tolerate a wider range of quality with electronic music than I can with other types of music (but, obviously, I'm more interested in listening to something of higher quality). After that, my interests probably mainly lie in instrumental music. Being a vocalist, I have the most difficult time overlooking mediocrity in vocals, so I'm much more picky in that area. Now, if there's a netlabel which has vocal music that is more than just mediocre, by all means recommend it!

You should check out scene.org, too. Good stuff there.

Download this two-part sampler from the enough label. Moody, highly textured, glitchy downtempo.

The second song on the first part is my favorite, but I like most of the rest too.

Yeah, The Kahvi Collective is hosted on scene.org...for some reason it didn't occur to me to look around for other stuff. Most of my experience with scene.org had to do with the demoscene, and that was 3 or 4 years ago. Thanks for pointing out it has a lot more
