seeking a specific genre of Rock...
Well I complied a nice list of songs that I have been listening to lately when Im at work, or just laying around and I am eager to find more of the same style or "melody" of Rock. Its kind of hard to ask what Im looking for so I will provide a list of songs that I think fit the same description.
I want to point out first that these songs are specific to the style i am looking for, and though these artist have much more mainstream (and upbeat) songs they do not fit the category im looking for (though I love all those songs too). If you are not sure what I am asking for, let me know, but without futher ado here are some assorted songs: Mogwai: Chocky may nothing but happiness come through your door two rights make 1 wrong Take me somewhere nice Smashing Pumpkins: Shame Eye By Starlight Radiohead: Dollars and Cents Exit Music (for a film) Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box Talk Show Host Moby: One of these mornings Nirvana: Something in the way Ok... I hope you get the point... Thanks in advance! |
Try the pixies....
not really a category but i think i might fit with what your lookng for. |
I may not have the point at all, but I think anything sung by James Grundler (what a funny last name!) may be right up your alley. He's been in three bands, The Din Pedals, Paloalto, and currently Golden State. You can download 4 of Golden State's songs at their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/goldenstatetheband
I like some of those, but I consider most of his best to be on previous albums. So if you like them, or if you want to hear some of his others anyway, PM me your email and I'll send you a couple. I encourage you to give him a chance, his voice really really grows on you and some of his other songs are now some of my favorite. A fun factoid: you will probably find one of paloalto's songs on Ares or whatever file sharer you use if you search for "Innocent Civilian" by radiohead. It's actually a song called "Some things must go this way" by Paloalto, and I really like it. It got confused for Radiohead somewhere along the way (kinda sounds like them) and was mislabeled, and became popular on the P2P's. That's how I initially found out who they were, because was trying to find out what Radiohead album the song was on, and had to do some intense research to find this out. That's also what gave me the idea to suggest them to you, since you mentioned Radiohead. It's a shame that quite a few people listened to them, but they never got any money for it, nor even the name recognition. It's one of my favorite songs of his, and if you like radiohead you'd probably like it |
M Ward - Transistor Radio
start with "Fuel fore Fire," incredibly well written song |
i think alice in chains acoustic ep's would do it for you..

Thanks for all of the replies they are helping out!! keep bringing some ideas (underground bands too) if you can...

Lake Trout, I think, might fit. Try their two most recent albums, Not Them, You and Another One Lost. In particular: "Bliss", "Riddle", "Stutter", "Systematic Self", and "Say Something". PM me if you're having trouble finding them. They have a few songs on myspace.
Ever try Bjork? Her album Homogenic (her best by far) might be a good fit. Nina Nastasia! Low key, dark, creepy music. I have and enjoy Run to Ruin. What about Slint? Iirc, they were the big precursor to post-rock bands like Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor. Spiderland is the album to get. That's all I've got. |

Cool, I'll check those all out. I listened to a few of your suggestions and found some pretty cool stuff.
Paloalto was pretty good, liked there style Pixies was cool, but from the ones I heard were a bit more wild than I was looking for M Ward sort of reminded me of Jack Johnson but a step slower, and didnt exactly fit. But was still cool Alice and Chains, the only band I was previously familiar with, the acoustics were cool, need to listen to them again... Thats as far as I got, I will check out your suggestions Foolthemall but first I will be heading to Disney this weekend. I will check back afterwards and hopefully I will have some more ideas and opinions. Thanks for all your help and look forward to more replies! PS: On a side note I stumbled upon a band called Keane. They sound very cool, similar style to Coldplay, just overall nice melodies. If you all are interested check them out. |
If you like Keane, then you might like KT Tunstall or Imogen Heap, I'd suggest them for sure!!

Explosions in the Sky. I would start with "The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place."

After first hearing shiny wrapper (i don't even remember where I got it from, probably a mp3 blog) I've seen them mentioned anywhere else until now. /end threadjack Although it sounds impersonal, try out pandora.com if you haven't already did so. As for actual bands, 'summer sun' by yo la tango could work for ya, but it might be too light for you. Also, maybe 'clinic' (they're more of the radiohead you listed maybe). Sorry if my req's are off, but I hope you enjoy the new music everyone's listed - just don't forget to stick around here afterwards ;) catcha back on the flipside, keyshawn /This thread makes me miss K-wise and his good music taste/ |

Im always around, I am just very selective when I post and try to only put in advice when its meaningful. Ive been around for 3+ years and will continue to be! No worries there... :) As for the requests, I am in the process of checking the rest of them out... I went to disney last week, then had to deal with Tropical Storm (which was pretty weak) the last couple of days... I have some time now, so here we go.. I checked out Lake Trout already and like them, they are very cool. I also listened to Explosions in the sky and they have very good mood music I got give some thumbs up on that one too! I still got to check out the rest... I will get back with you all soon! Thanks again |
