Which amp to buy ??
 

I am looking at upgrading to a decent guitar amp, and wanted to know which one you would chose out of a Marshall MG50DFX and a Line 6 Spider 210.

Both are used, and about the same price. I want something that is has good tone, and is loud enough for a jam. I mostly play alternative rock - metal, but enjoy playing many types of music.

Anyone here have either of these amps?

Marshall is the old standard
can't go wrong.....unless it's has been abused and is fried
Line6 the new guys are makeing some great stuff
new inovations.....combining the best of past successes
I love the line6 guitar port
As they are both used
play them both hard to make sure they are still good
Other than that it depends on what sound you want.
Line 6 has it's own brand of distortion

LIne 6 spider, I wouldn't take if you were paying me to take. The amps from this company have loads of frills and gimmicks with digital fun. But it depends... are you playing in a band.. if so, get the marshall. The Line 6 just does not cut over a drummer. The W and speakers might say it does, but I've played with and known people who bought and owns a LIne 6 and hates it (he uses the word hate here with intent )

The Marshal is real. I personally don't like a lot of Line 6 anything (the Dl4 delay is good, that's all I've come across). It has all sorts of cool functions, and I think that is an impressive display of technology from Line 6. I would rather the grass roots, elbow greese Marshal amps. Looking at the amp, it doesn't need an OD pedal. It's got 2 channels, one is clean, the other is overdrive (this is Marshal afterall, it's going to give you balls). It might have a footswitch, if not, then you may need to purchase one. A good distortion box is good to have either way.


But then.. I wouldn't buy a Marshal amp anyway.

Personal preference.

Can't go wrong with the Marshall.

My nephew has the same Marshall. The Line 6 is full of electronic gadgets, but the DFX in the Marshall's name means it does almost as much. The Marshall will also be worth more when you move to a separate head and cabinets, although this one will also drive a cabinet.

Keep in mind that this is way too powerful for a practice amp. Are you keeping your old one? It will still have trouble being heard over the drums though. That's what my nephew tells me at least (I'm just a wanker with a guitar...he's the expert).

Personally i think the MG50s have inferior tone for a marshall and you're paying more for the name then the tone. The line 6 is digital and i hear the spider is hit or miss at times but its good for a nu-metalish tone. If you want to look at alot of different amp reviews you should check out http://www.harmony-central.com/User_Reviews/ and read some of the reviews there. Personally i would recommend the mesa boogie f-50. Its also 50 watts but man does it it pack a punch and you can get a sweet sweet clean tone and a killer heavy sound. Check it out and i hope you find what you're looking for.

Line 6 amps are fun to play with, but there is no "just you and the amp" kind of sound.. it all sounds so digital and processed to me. I am a huge fan of just taking my guitar and pluggin her straight into the amp with no effects.

I would go with the Marshal

I personally wouldn't go with either amp; but if you're set on one of them get the marshall. Line 6 amps don't sound alive if you know what I mean. They also aren't very durable. You should take a look at some of the cheaper tube fenders. They are very beautiful sounding amps.

something's point about the tone of Fenders is a good one, but if you're set on a choice between these two amps, I'd pick the Marshall.

<--- owns 3 fender tube amps. I'm bias towards Fender tube amps but depending on what music you are playing they might not be the amp for you. But of course, this is Marshal vs Line 6, it was pretty one sided

I own a fender deville 4x10 and it just sings. The clean channel is just heavenly and the reverb is orgasmal, heh. A lot of people say a fender amp might not be the amp for certain styles of music but I'd say they are wrong. It's got such a pure clean tone that it's a good base for anybody's tone. With good effects you can make that amp pull off just about any style in my opinion; from jazz to heavy shit, or whatnot.
