Here's an odd question for you car mechanic people

So, I did some searching online and couldn't find my answer... I searched on TFP and couldn't find anything either so here goes:

Why do cars make that tick noise after you turn them off when they've been running?

The ticking noise that you hear is the sound of the metal contracting as it rapidly cools, that's also why the ticking slows down quickly and will then stop.

Why thank you, sir. I've always wanted to know what that was....

Metal generally doesn't contract that much... but I guess it's enough from the separate parts.

Good info, thanks.

An SC400 i drove for a while ticked like crazy when you parked it. we finally realized it was the brake rotors cooling down. We were always goin like 120 100yds before the driveway.
