Odometer Question

I've got a 1993 Nissan Pickup, and I got "new" tires for it last fall. The truck was given to me by my stepfather and I had to put about $1200 into it to get it running good and inspected and everything. My friends dad is a mechanic and also has a salvage yard. He got the tires off of a recently totaled truck. I know they were new because they still had those little rubber... hair type things on them But here's my question:

My speedometer is off, by what seems to be about 10mph over actual speed. I've lived w/ it, no big deal, but I've been wondering. Will that cause false odometer readings? I've been measuring my gas mileage and it seems a bit low, would that have anything to do with it?

Most likely, yes it will cause your odometer to be off as well. If those tires are smaller than the factory size, it'll make your speedometer read high. You can check it by driving at 60 mph on a highway and timing how long it takes to drive a mile based on the markers, if the speedo is dead on it should of course be 60 seconds.

as the others said, yes it can cause the odo to be off. Also, if these new tires have a "dirt" tread, you know something with more grooves, more of a heavy duty tires....it will cause the gas mileage to decrease.

They do have a decent amount of tread, but it's not that bad, I've got some friends who have tires where the tread makes an unbearable noise when driving on paved roads. Mine isn't too bad. And yeah, these tires are definitely smaller than the stock. Thanks a lot guys
