Bugatti vs. McLaren

there haven't been any official tests on it yet, but i want to know what you guys think, will the Bugatti EB16-4 Veyron take out the McLaren F1 as the fastest car in the world? i think there's a good chance.

Bugatti- $1,000,000
8.0L W-16 engine
4 turbos
1001 bhp at 6000 rpm
992 lb.-ft. torque at 5500 rpm
curb weight: ?
7-speed clutchless paddle shift providing shifts of less than .2 seconds
mid-engine
AWD
252 mph top speed (claimed)
0-186 mph in < 14 seconds (claimed)

McLaren- $1,000,000
6.1L V-12 engine
627 bhp at 7400 rpm
479 lb.-ft. torque at 4000 rpm
curb weight: 2425 lb
6-speed manual tranny
mid-engine
RWD
242 mph top speed
0-60 3.4 seconds
1/4 mile 11.6 seconds @ 125.0 mph

i think the weight of the Bugatti will play a big part, with the McLaren being so light... so i guess we'll see. who do you think will be faster?

strife 05-18-2003 01:46 PM

I am, and always will be a die hard Mclaren fan. So, my vote goes to McLaren...btw, you could make this a poll :) I don't deny that the Bugatti is an awesome car, but for when the McLaren was made, I think that says a lot. Also I heard on another forum that the Bugatti that they are offering to the public is going to be 650 bhp. I don't know if that is accurate or not, but I guess time will tell.

3x0 05-18-2003 02:25 PM

:O With such gearbox I guess that Bugatti will make much advantage on shifts. I vote for Bugatti. I'm surprised that it's "only" 1m$

Rippley 05-18-2003 02:53 PM

Fastes yes, but to beat the McLaren, it needs to handle well also. Straight lines are no fun. The true measure of a car is in the curves, not the straighaways...
My 2 cents.

soccerchamp76 05-18-2003 04:02 PM

Weight depends on whether or not the Bugatti will have standard luxuries; ie. A/C, etc.

The McLaren has no luxuries and almost no comfort features which allows for a lighter weight. The Enzo Ferrari wanted to keep pace with the McLaren but Ferrari wanted to have the car to have comfort, so it has A/C, nice stereo, etc.

Halx 05-18-2003 04:09 PM

Shit.. 1mil?

I was hoping to take out a lease on a Veyron one day but I guess not

that was humor for anyone who didn't catch it.

strife 05-18-2003 04:31 PM

This McLaren has enough luxuries for me. Even a stock one would work too.

www.mclaren4sale.com

Tech 05-18-2003 05:18 PM

i agree about the luxuries, but we'll see if the extra horsepower is usable enough to overcome that. i know that sometimes horsepower gets excessive and is not useful anymore, but it's still DOUBLE the hp...

i also somewhat agree with the handling comment, but the F1 is famous for going in a straight line. there are lots of cars that handle as well if not better than the McLaren. the Mini Cooper S went throught the slalom test in Road & Track (69.5 mph) faster than ANY car they have ever tested, beating out the Porche 911 GT2 (68.7 mph). the McLaren is great in the corners (R&T got a slalom speed of 64.5 mph) but it is FAMOUS in acceleration.

BoCo 05-18-2003 06:57 PM

McLaren has horrible heating issues. At least the Bugatti won't bake you or the engine to death.

clonmult 05-19-2003 01:28 AM

The McLaren was designed to handle well, by people who seriously know how to make a car go fast.

And how many people do a slalom test every day? That is no way of saying how well a car will handle on a circuit, or even on the road. You're telling me that the Mini out-corners the McLaren, based on 1, extremely specific situation? No way.

For me, the McLaren F1 is still the definitive road/race car. No turbo engine will beat the flexibility and throttle response of that BMW engine.

focalevo 05-19-2003 12:32 PM

Between these two cars, the Veyron sounds awesome. 16 cylinders, 4 turbos, all wheel drive, ummm, yes please!

Of course as a stable mate to this, I'll be adding the Saleen S7.
0-60: 3.3 seconds (faster than the McLaren!!)
1/4 mile: 11.8 seconds
top speed (est.): 220mph
skidpad: .99g's
slalom: 70.6mph (better than a Mini)
All of this for around $400,000 and with all the comforts.

Course, I'll still take the Veyron if you'll buy it for me :)

Tech 05-19-2003 02:14 PM

yes i agree with the Saleen S7, did you also read the new R&T? ;)

the craziest thing is that 0-60 time is without even changing out of 1st!!! :o and you can cruise down the interstate in 2nd!

focalevo 05-19-2003 03:41 PM

yes, June R&T was an immediate read.

Don't think I could stand keeping it in second with all that interstate to play on though :)

Course, like I said earlier, 4 turbos spooling would also be nice!!

clonmult 05-20-2003 01:49 AM

McLaren, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds .....

And that was with the "high top speed" (235+mph) gearing. It'd be a little faster with the shorter gearing.

Spyder_Venom 05-20-2003 06:27 AM

I'm not saying who will win or even giving a prediction but you guys honestly think that Bugatti dosen't make cars that can handel? Bugatti has 100X more racing history then Mclearn does, granted he is the new guy on the block I wouldn't under estmate what Bugatti has up thier sleeve.

clonmult 05-20-2003 07:24 AM

How can bugatti have 100x more racing history than McLaren? McLaren are (with Ferrari) the most experienced racing team in history (at least in European racing).

The McLaren was designed by F1 race car designers, and put together by some of the best engineers outside of the aerospace industry.

The Bugatti will handle well, and go well, but its going to be a LOT heavier, and will be (relatively) compromised design with regards to being the ultimate in handling.

I don't know where you're getting your info but straight from McLaren:

STANDARD EQUIPMENT
Full cabin air conditioning
SeKurit electric defrost/ de mist windscreen and side glass
Electric window lifts
Remote central locking
Kenwood CD stereo system
Cabin access release for opening panels
Tailored document case
Cabin stowage department
Four lamp high performance headlight system
Rear fog and reversing lights
Courtesy lights in all compartments
Map reading lights
Remote battery charging point
Facom titanium tool kit
External battery charger
McLaren F1 owner/drivers handbook

And for the others, the F1 is an exceptionally great handling car. Search the internet for the BBC's Top Gear video on the car. You'll be more impressed.

hdvrod1 05-20-2003 04:42 PM

MCLAREN, i cant stand the bugatti

0001 05-20-2003 05:32 PM

The Mclaren looks so much better too..

jharmer 05-20-2003 07:07 PM

yeah, the mclaren is still the ultimate car. And as yarbonwick
pointed out, it does have an exceptional list of amenities. I hadn't heard about the heat issues, but I can imagine that much engine right behind you would get a little toasty. You know what? I'd deal with it :)

Doc_34465 05-20-2003 08:10 PM

I don't know much about exotics except Porsche, but my money is on Mclaren..

stark6 05-20-2003 10:57 PM

I would rather one of these:

http://www.koenigsegg.com/index.asp

faster than the Mclaren (hate to break it to you guys, but it was designed in the early 90's)

also, is the Bugatti out yet?

clonmult 05-21-2003 01:17 AM

The Koenigsegg isn't faster than the McLaren.

clonmult 05-21-2003 01:26 AM

Just checked, the McLaren has actually hit 240mph, whereas the Koenigsecc is only quoted as having a "theoretical 390km/h" top speed (about 240mph?).

3x0 05-21-2003 02:25 AM

Huh... on these sites when they put it on some list together with 4 example Lambo - Diablo... omg it's so damn slow comparing to them =) Not even mentioning vette etc. (I was nicely "surprised" by Porsche Turbo. I didn't really think it's that fast)

stark6 05-21-2003 08:29 AM

The Koenigsegg's top speed it 242 mph. The one in the gumball 3000 this year hit 235 in east texas :D

Ettore Bugatti was winning races before Bruce McLaren was even a glint in his parent's eyes. Bugatti built the Type 35, in less then 10 the type 35 won over 2000 races. Hell Bugatti was winning races long before Enzo was even in the picture.

stingc 05-21-2003 11:28 AM

But most of Bugatti's racing history was a long long time ago.

Tech 05-21-2003 11:48 AM

so they both have a great racing history. 'nuff said.

look at Saleen, he doesn't have any racing history and he just came out with the S7 which gives the McLaren a run for it's money any day of the week. it would probably come down to the driver it's so close.

vapusforever 05-21-2003 11:27 PM

History is an overrated factor, it is all about developing a brilliant car that outperforms the competition, regardless of recing history.

How does the new Porsche Carrera GT fare against the F1 and S7

clonmult 05-22-2003 03:16 AM

The old Bugatti and the new one just share one thing - the name, nothing else. Its owned by the VW Audi group now, isn't it? Won't be long before you find a Bugatti with the same air vents as a VW Passat then.

Regardless of my (or anyone elses) opinions on these cars, it'll only be answered when they get put on the track, and I'll be first in line to get tickets, keep back, me first, me first!

Spyder_Venom 05-22-2003 06:06 AM

I'm trying to understand something now the point is brought up..

How can some one compair a S7 or whatever to a Porsche GT2 or any other road car for that matter. People keep compairing apples and oranges here. One is a purpouse built race car that just might meet street requirements while the other is a production built street car that is preped (as a factory option) for compition in T1 or comperable street car classes? While if you look at the rules they will not take a F1 or a S7. I don't even think they will qualify for GT1 classes.

In terms of who has more racing experiance, that is not the question. McLaren as it sits does not have as much history as Bugatti. Ferrari may be in the picture but do you know to what level? For all you or I know it may be a huge P/R ploy. Untill someone knows exacally what Ferrari has done for McLaren I see no point to even use it in a agument. I don't think any orginal members of the old school Bugatti race R&D people are around but nor is any of Ferrari. Between those two companys you can spit back and forth. Its like Ford and Chevy - have fun beating that into the ground :p
