Turbocharging

whats up guys. i own a 1995 dodge avenger es and am planning on doing a nice motor swap this winter. i am gonna swap in a 3.0L Mitsu motor and obviously turbo it. now heres the thing. i really dont know all that much but the basics on turbos and such. i know basics and not that many to boot. i was just basically seeing if anyone had any good sites or and info that would be usefull to me. i mean i want all kinds of info. i was also considering the idea of twin turbos because well the constant power thing sounds good. an info regarding this subject is helpfull.

waltert 09-23-2004 05:38 PM

is the 3.0 mitsubishi motor a turbo motor from the factory? (out of a 3000gt?)

krwlz 09-26-2004 04:59 PM

I am friends with derrick, and since he obviously hasnt checked this, yes, the 3.0 Turbo Motor is the motor of choice.

derrick589 10-01-2004 06:10 AM

yeah

yeah a 3.0 Turbo. but, do you think its a better off idea just going with an eclipse motor or would you think to go a step further and hope to maybe find a wrecked vr4 or somthing. i mean if possible. i think itll be a fair amount of work as is. and just needing info on what to look for and for what reasons.

VR4 is a twin-turbo V6, the VR4 motor if I'm not mistaken was also used in an AWD configuration drivetrain. At least, in the Galant and 3000GT it was, I'm not sure it can be used in a '95 Avenger.

Eclipse motor was a 2.0L Inline-4 Turbo in 1995. The 4g63 is the motor. Your Avenger came with a 420a, or should have. I don't think there was a V6 upgrade that year. Could be wrong though. The 4g63 won't fit. www.hahnracecraft.com has a killer turbo kit for the 420a.

BTW, which motor exactly, what model of engine are you looking at exactly? I have a little experince with DSM work, so, but I'm confused which motor your looking at.

EDIT: Sorry, I got home and looked for replies and gave you a little more info on the motors.

I tend to advize people away from pulling used motors from the junkyard. if you rebuilt your motor and had forged pistons made for it, it would probably take a liking to that turbocharger system, even if you still ran stock compression.

im almost certain that your stock motor rebuilt with forged pistons will have better reliability than something swapped out. is this a daily driver? all out drag car? road racing?

Kurant 10-02-2004 06:05 AM

Your right, that, and the added weight of the V6 as opposed to the 420a motor. IMO, your probably going to benefit more from finding a 420a and putting a turbo on that motor, since the 4g63 doesn't fit.

You could even get one built.

Also, do you know if the tranny is going to bolt up? That may be your first thing to check, because if you have to change trannys you could be in trouble. I know about all you will ever need to know about turboing a car, so if you've got specific questions let me know through PM

Correction, the 3.0 turbo that would have been offered in the eclipse, is the one he was talking about.

It is not a daily driver, just a summer car, and he is simple looking for a motor to start with, and then probably rebuild from the ground up, and start playing with differant turbos, or perhaps twin, etc.

The what? As far as I know, there is no 3.0 liter turbo eclipse.

The Mitsubishi/Chrysler 3.0L engine has been in many different automobiles and in a few different configurations since around 1987: Chrysler has used a SOHC version in the Acclaim, Caravan, Duster, Lebaron, New Yorker, Shadow, Spirit, Voyager, the Chrysler-Maserati TC, and the base Stealth. Mitsubishi has used a SOHC, DOHC, and a DOHC Twin-Turbo in vehicles such as the Challenger, Diamante, Galant, Montero (24 valve), Pajero, Sigma, Triton, Velada, and the 3000GT/Stealth R/T. Hyundai also used it as the V6 option in their Sonata (Mitsubishi is part owner).
So the only 3.0 liter factory turbo's you are going to find are from the 3000GT VR4 and the Stealth R/T.

The Eclipse came with a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4g63...is that what you mean?

krwlz 10-05-2004 03:25 PM

I'm afraid I was trying to keep this thread alive while my friend was unavailable online, so I dont know all the details. It very well may be the one offered in the stealth, but I really couldn't tell you.

He talked to a guy at a tuner shop, who seemed to think there was a 3.0 turbo motor from mitsu, that would just bolt right in to everything.

Then again, what do I know?

mdryfhout 10-06-2004 04:02 AM

a vr4 motor is best its east/west and if your car is rear wheel drive it also can fit in but you need to get mount made up

I know this isn't what you WANT to hear, but you'll spend far less just buying a car with a turbo already. For the time and money you'll invest, just buy a 1st gen (90-94) DSM (Eclipse, Talon, Laser) for under $3,000 complete with turbo and all wheel drive.

If you want something fun, but a Dodge Colt. I'm not kidding... In 89 they made 1500 Colts and Mirages with a 4G61t (1.6 liter, turbocharged destroked version of the 2.0 4G63). Well, with a few bolt-ons, including a Conquest intercooler, DSM injectors and fuel pump, AFC, etc, my friend's will walk away from my VR4 or my EVO and still get 30+ miles to the gallon. Kinda funny to humiliate C5s in an econo-box. If I'm not mistaken, any 89-92 Dodge Colt or Mitsu Mirage will accept the 4G63 as a drop in. You can get the car on trade for a pack of gum, pick up a complete 4G63 for $1000-$1500, find an ECU and have a car that makes 200hp (with no mods) and weighs in at under 2500 lbs. Oh, forget about ever using 1st or 2nd gear, my friend's blows the tires off from a roll in 2nd...
