What classic car should I get?

I'm based in the UK and I'm looking to buy a fun weekend car.

I have got about 2000 Sterling to spend.

I'm looking to get a classic that does not need much work or a "modern classic" a car that will become a classic in ten years from now. Ideally it would be a topless car, but as long as it is fun to drive and looks good not rally too bothered.

I have been looking at some early 1980's Merc's but don't know what model to go for.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Get a Ford Anglia.

Those were some cool little ole coupes.

Something british would be neat...Triumph, MG or even a Jag.

Things from the 80's are NOT classics.

I don't know how many american cars are available there, so I'll only name a few.
-mid 70's to 80's Porsche 911: these can be extremly fun cars to rebuild, or just to get stock. A good friend has an '85 911 that is consistantly winning races at our local track (our local track is world renound Laguna Seca Raceway).
-1978 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class: I watched one of these drive by downtown a few weeks ago. It looked so elagant and classy. It has about 225 hp at the wheels and, if you treat it well, will last for a long time.
-early 70' Dodge Challenger: Awesome cars. If you want a topless muscle car that has a strong look and really great power, this is for you. Most people love the Dodge 'cuda, but the Challenger was the luxary version of the car, and less expensive.

Hope I helped.

just out of curiosity, what's the approx. exchange rate nowdays? isn't 2,000 pounds like 4 or 5 thousand US? anyway if that's the case, then you will be a little limited, but I like the suggestions of the old 911's and the SL's. the old Mopars are cool too, and if you like the droptops the barracudas are great, just try to get something bigger than the 318ci. (once again you'll have to excuse my ignorance, but I believe that the big V8's will kill you on the tax though). it's always fun to make car suggestions with someone else's money!

"What classic car should I get?"

I wish I had enough money to ask that kind of question.

As do I. I can only suggest my favorite car, being a 67 corvette. If the currency exchange stated is correct though... well, good luck.

I wish the exchange rate was that strong!! Probably get about US$3,000-US$3500. Does limit me a bit.

I do like the suggestions coming in. I do like the 911 and the Ford Anglia suggestions.
