Nitrous

bet it was loud

Asuka{eve} 06-26-2004 09:18 PM

MY GOD!!! It looks like a gunfight went on or something.

KirStang 06-26-2004 09:36 PM

Boom.

He one simple error, with such devastating results.

todd 06-26-2004 09:41 PM

He's lucky the bottle didn't go the other way. He'd have a hole straight through his house.

merkerguitars 06-26-2004 10:12 PM

Holy shit, it will be interesting to see who is at fault of the problem, I know for sure that NX does make some of the most reliable kits around....but you never know.

rockogre 06-28-2004 05:21 AM

Damn good thing he wasn't in the garage at the time. Too much go all at once always seems to be a bad thing.

RaDiAn 06-28-2004 08:22 AM

Man that is just crazy.....

castex 06-28-2004 11:03 AM

Best possible result for that car:D

Still sucks that happened, and yeah, probably was quite loud.

choskins 06-28-2004 11:55 AM

I saw a 1976 Corvette, with a ZZ4 crate motor and nitrous, blow its hood literally 300 ft. in the air during a 1/8 mile run. It was awesome!

I had nitrous on a 1991 Vette several years ago, but didn't replace the stock head gaskets. I learned the hard way why Chevy motors leak oil. The head gaskets suck. After developing a leak, water got in the cylinder. Mix that with nitrous, and Bye Bye pistons!

That was my thought exactly when I saw the pics. Lucky no one was in the garage or car. Wow.

shakran 06-29-2004 04:39 AM

i've been looking for those pics for awhile now. Thanks for posting them.

The whole story is that the guy is an idiot. He installed the nitrous system wrong so that the safety valve couldn't open. Then he left the bottle heater on even though everyone with 3 brain cells who has nitrous knows not to do that, and even though you shouldn't be able to do that with his system because the bottle heater had a timer on it - a timer which Mr. Brilliant disabled on purpose.

Then when the inevitable happened and his car blew up, he sued NOS, claiming it was their fault that he had installed it wrong and used it wrong and bypassed a safety feature. Needless to say, he lost.

irseg 06-29-2004 08:01 AM

I think the guy did it on purpose. Pretty convenient how he installed it in a way that bypassed all the safety devices, then the pressure relief valve just happened to malfunction. And he doesn't seem to be very cooperative with any investigators who want to look at the evidence and see what went wrong.

Then he was left with damage most likely covered by his car and homeowner's insurance (of course nobody was near the car at the time it exploded), plus he had a good shot at winning a lawsuit against NX, as well as getting some free publicity for himself and his bullshit "enhancedhealth.com" site where the photos are conveniently hosted.

At the very best the guy is a complete moron, most likely he's an opporunistic lying piece of shit.

SpikeQX99 06-29-2004 06:56 PM

Yeah, purposefully bypassing the safety features and then trying to sue after the "big bang"...

What a moron....

NX makes (in my limited opinion) a very high quality and reputable product. He's just being difficult and trying to cash in on the easy money...

What an asshole.

Bottles are for babies, real men get blown (outside of Prostock and up)

Beat me to it, the guy installed 2 bursts caps back to back (instead of the just needed one) at the safety release valve. These caps are designed to burst at a certain PSI, releasing the pressure and saving yourself from a situation just like this. The way the heater (which warms the bottle, raising the pressure o an optimal 1000-1100PSI) works is it's wired to a pressure tranducer that monitors pressure and cuts off voltage when a certain point is reached. Once again, error by the operator...who left the bottle valve closed while heating the bottle.

I saw these pictures a few years ago on a Maxima forum. It had to be about 3 years ago.

a mile away is pretty far.. in NYC I'm surrounded by people 24/7. It just takes one moron to turn on the stove and not light the stove... and then boom.
