Seafoam
Does anyone here have any experience using Seafoam? My explorer has horrible pinging problems while driving above 65, and I saw this stuff talked about on one of the explorer forums. I'm thinking about going out and getting a bottle. Anyone here used it?

Never used it. Heard of it...heard it works something similar to Marvel Mystery Oil, but never used it. If you are pinging a lot though, go get a higher grade of gas. Had to do that with the jeep several months ago. Ended up getting slightly better mileage, so even with the increase in gas cost it ended up being about the same net cost. Pinging really isn't very good for your engine, so until you can try out different additives, raise that octane.

I would add some MMO or BG44k to a good tank of gas, and run through the entire tank before refilling. Both can do wonders in cleaning out those injectors and removing carbon deposits and other junk that can cause hot spots.

If the pinging is because of carbon build up, seafoam will work great. I've used it in alot of cars with great results.
I highly recommend both seafoam and MMO. |
The pinging could also be improper ignition timing. Find a buddy with a timing light and check it.
Could also be a clogging fuel filter - running lean will almost always cause pinging. Could be a bad oxygen sensor - the engine doesn't know the right fuel/air ratio to use, so you ping. I'd try the seafoam first and if that doesn't work start checking the other stuff before you upgrade gas. |

I keep a couple cans of SEAFOAM around and use it frequently.
I add it to any fuel mixture in all my gas burning toys and tools. The giggest improvement was in a SEADOO 18ft twin 110hp jet boat....the low idle vibration went away and the power band has become larger...less sensitive. The reccommended octane for the boat is 87..... Everything "SEAMS, sounds, and feels" better...and long distanc cec road trips get better mileage...only put in tank once every 4-5 fill ups.... I don't have access to a dyno nor the chemical background ...but .....seeing and feeling is believing.. |
