Volvo 1972 170 Series

I'm getting a car from a friend and it's a 1972 Volvo, 170 series. Does anyone know anything about this car? It's supposedly rare. I can't find any info on it. I'm just interested in anything I can get.
Thanks

I'm not too up on the older models, I've never heard of it, I thought that they made only the 164's and the 1800's around that period. A 170 sounds a little off from Volvo's model numbering system too, through the 240's they typically had the series number (i.e.1 series, 2 series etc) then the number of cylinders (4,5,6), then the number of doors (2,4, and 5 for the wagons) so a 245 would be a 2 series four cylinder wagon. Even the 960's and 850's at least kept the series and cylinder numbers mostly in line. Usually they'd add a GL if it had leather, and a DL if it didn't, or a GLE if it was turbo (740 GLE). Anyway, I'm curious so keep us posted.

I found a website with information about almost every Volvo model from the 1920s to 90s. Alas, no 170. Seems like all the 1 series cars were made in the 1960's. Here is the link:

Anyway, I'll be going down to San Diego this weekend to pick it up and I'll try to post pictures and info about the car.

Thanks for the reply

Well, it turns out it's actually a 144S. I'm not sure where my friend got "170" from.

On my way back home from San Diego the engine crapped out and the car is sitting in a lot about 90 miles south of my house.

It was such a cool car and I had some pretty cool ideas... I think the chances of me towing it 90 miles is pretty slim, and everyone is telling me to just junk it.

Bummer... what to do...?

well it all comes down to money, unfortunately, I guess. It may not be worth it to get it 90 miles to your house. Is it in decent shape? How much were you planning on doing anyway? If you were planning a total renovation with some extras added on, and the car is in need of it, you could figure the tow into the total cost and not feel as bad about it. 144's were common and solid. They were the type of car Volvo built their reputation on. If you finish a complete resto. on that car you would have a fun, nice car, but it would not be worth much or impress many, save for a few enthusiasts. Check into tow dollies @ U-haul, it would be a fairly inexpensive way to get it to your house. (Then you can think about dropping a used B230 engine in or something fun like that) And hey, if you don't end up with it, at least you tried.
