ive got a 1965 plymouth valiant with a 225 slant six and im going to be puting in a 360 380hp crate motor, but the stock 904 tranny isnt going to do anymore i need somthing that is going to handle the power and also i would like to have overdrive. i have found a few manual transmissions that will do it but i do like having an automatic. any one know of anywere to get a good tranny

I would think you should be able to find a nice 727 torqueflight that would work. I'm not too much on knowing what fits what with mopar stuff but I woulod hopef you could find something.

Talk to Chris at CK Performance. Even if you don't buy from him, he knows his stuff, and can tell you what to look for when shopping around or going to a local builder. If I don't go with my local guy for my th400 w/transbrake, I'll be more than happy to drop over $2000 on one of Chris' stage 3's.

i was looking at 727's but i really want overdive and i havent seen any with overdrive.

The transmission you're looking for is available from CK and a number of other sources. Its called the A518, and is based on the 727, but with 4th gear overdrive. These trannys bolt up directly to Chrysler smallblocks. The only other Chrysler automatic with overdrive that I'm aware of was the A500, and that was manufactured for 6 cylinder cars.

Edit: Did a little searching, and I believe that these trannys were available in 1988-2001 Rams, Ram Vans, Dakotas, and Durangos. There are a number of sources out there for these trannys, but you will likely have to get the computer that controls it as well. Also, the factory units use lockup converters, but I guess some aftermarket manufacturers convert them to non lockup for performance purposes.

The early ones (88-92 I believe) didn't have computers to control them, so they're your best bet. You can find them in Dakota trucks with the 3.9L V6 or any V8.

If it was me I'd drop in a 727 built to 440HO specs. Those transmissions were rated to over 400hp. Then bolt an aftermarket over drive from Gear Vendors. For $3000 you get a rebuilt trans with overdrive that basicly will not fail. Even when pushing 400hp off the crank.

No computers to mess with. As a bonus you can set it up to allow you to gear split which is nice to have once you get used to it though most useful on trucks.

Well the trucks with the Magnum engines in them have the trannies called the 42/44/46RE (or RH. The RH is abit before my knowledge range though ... 1997-present lol). Your correct though, its basically just a electronically controlled Torque Flight 727 :)). The numbers desinate the torque capacity. Not to say the 42RE is weak, because it is still strong, but the 46RE came optional on some 5.2l and most of the 5.9's.


pssst. have you considered building a 340ci? :D sorry I just have a weak spot for 318's and 340's (esp. with the X heads and mystery cam :drool: ;))

im going to get right out of the box power with a 360 crate motor makes things easy and since im already going to have to build alot of things like tubing the rear making and puting in frame connecters things of that nature just makes it easy to know i dont have to mess much with the motor.
