The XC90 is an SUV, can have upto three rows of seats, and it's AWD.

The v70 is a fwd wagon. Not to be confused with the Cross Country (xc-70), which is an AWD wagon, with taller tires and higher ground clearnances, similar to the XC90.

It compares to the v70 in that it's a Volvo, full of safety innovations, and the quality, workmanship, and expected longevity that Volvo's are legendary for.

Other then that it's tough to compare an AWD SUV with a FWD wagon.

I think engine options are similar, curb weight is similar, and the v70 comes in between 5-10k cheaper depending on add on packages.

Probably MUCH cheaper cost of ownership on the wagon, insurance premiums and all.

Why do you ask?

BTW...check out volvo's website....every question you could have about any of their products is available, including options, prices, specials, and dealerships:

Insane

The XC90 is an SUV, so not all that closely related to the V70, really. Apparently though its a really nice car. Doesn't compare to a VW Touareg or a Cayenne. But for safety it's top notch. Check out these links:

hope this answers your questions

Jbear- I meant the xc70, not the v70. I rented one a while back and liked it. I was wondering if anyone had driven both vehicles and could render an opinion if its worth the extra bucks. I looked at the 90 in the showroom but it didn't seem to me that it was.

Rippley, a Cayenne would be insane, but I can't afford that. It sure would be fun to make a fool out the guy down the street with one of those new hummers.

My family is full of Volvo nuts (myself included), and I've driven both a 2001 V70XC (now called the XC70) and a 2004 XC90. Really, they're geared for similar targets, the question would be: how SUV do you want to go? Personally, I love the XC70 more than the XC90, but if I had to be driving an SUV, an XC90 is a great choice. I just love wagons, and am not that much a fan of SUVs in general. They've both been used (and performed quite well) in the Rocky Mountains of CO. I'm personally rather skittish when it comes to driving on snow, but have felt very safe in both. The new XC70 is a 210ish HP engine using Volvo's new 2.5T engine, which is fantastic (I have an S60AWD which uses it, and it's awesome), but the XC90 can scale up to Volvo's T6 engine which is 250ish HP.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is: you can't go wrong with either, it's just a matter of how SUV you want to go. Personally, I say go with the wagon, but that's just me.
