Driving with the hand brake up
What exactly happens?
|
um....
you wear it out, why? theres a lot of different cars out there, and a lot of them have completely different e-brake systems.... |
Your rear brakes will start smoking..... a Genie will appear from the smoke and grant you three wishes,
Make sure your first wish is for new rear brakes. |
Vehicle in question is a 1400 Datsun "truck" model 1982
|
You'll screw up the rear brakes, could mess with the transmission/clutch, and the rear wheel bearings, dependent on how long and fast it got driven.

How fast: tops of 80km/h |
ouch... well a quick test is to put the brake on and see if the car will move while idling... dont push on the gas at all... if it moves then the brakes are completely toast... if it doesnt... then their just mostly gone...
either way you should have them replaced... and some of the other parts mentioned above checked out... |
Dont stress over it. If you were able to drive on it that long and not know that it was on, it couldn't have been working real well. In which case the damage to the breaks is gonna be pretty minimal. If its a bit of work to get the car going while the break is on, and then you go and drive for a while, you will burn out your breaks pretty fast. In your case, id say dont do it again, and go on with life.

Funny thing is that everything seems to be working ok, no rolling or anything.
http://www.mccarthynissan.co.za/imag..._lifestyle.jpg Looks a bit like this one, but is way older with original datsun hubcaps. The design hasn't changed for 20 odd years. |
It'll be fine. Just replace your rear breaks whenever you next go in for service.
|
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that time and speed. Just replace the rear brake shoes, and maybe the wheel cylinders, and be done with it. No harm done in this case, most likely.
|
did it start to smoke is that why you are asking this question?
If so.. Breakes wil start to smoke after extended periods of time. Cheaper breaks will start to smoke sooner then nicer more expensive breaks I.E. porciline breaks are geat. a little more expensive but u aslo dont get the black dust on the rims. In other words if it was just starting to smoke one time and nothing happened you are ok! Second are u asking couse you cant "turn" the E-Break off? |
My answer would be nothing happened.
If you're like most people, you're not pulling the ebrake up completely all the way until it can't budge any further. If you would have done that, you would have immediately known about it. Most likely there was some small rubbing, I'd even go as far to say that there was probably little to no wear. Some cars also have ebrakes on a seperate pad/device, your regular brakeshoes/pads may not even be worn. And plus, it's the rear brakes which only does like 25-30% of your total braking. You won't be crashing anytime soon. |
No smoke and the e-brake is fine. I guess its all good.
But the smell scared the shit out of me. |
