Rokon - 2WD Motorcycle

What do you thing of this? I think I want one for Trail Riding.

From Rokon.com:
Trail-Breaker™. The name synonymous with off road transportation for 40 years has proven its worth as an American classic. Years and years of unforgettable trips to the out back have given Rokon riders a lifetime of memories. Trail-Breakers have climbed up high peaks including the Chilean Andes, gone through mud bogs where 4-wheelers never leave, traversed slippery snow fields and even provided safe passage for explorers through the treacherous Darien Gap. Users include the US Special Forces in Desert Storm, the US Forest Service, some 25 states Fish and Game officers, countless big game hunters, and even treasure seekers. They count on Trail-Breakers because they go anywhere and do it with unparalleled ROKON reliability.

Why? Each Trail-Breaker has patented dual wheel drive, a high ground clearance (15 in.) lightweight (208 lbs.) and wide tractor type tires (5.9x15).

Versatile? You bet. Mount pumps, generators, sidecars, gun boots and 50 other accessories. You can turn your Trail-Breaker into a plow horse or mountain goat. And they even float by virtue of hollow 15-inch aluminum drum wheels. Drum like in you can store up to 4.5 gallons of fuel or water in each wheel. Narrow enough to fit down a row crop or tight tree stands. Tough enough to climb over rocks, fallen trees or other obstacles.

How? Operate for up to 9 hours on one fill up of the almost 3 gallon tank and run its classic work horse four stroke Kohler engine where ever you need to Trail-Breaker is automatic and is operated by hands only. No shifting necessary with your feet. It's balanced enough to climb steep slopes at speeds of only 0.5 mph. It will also carry two people aboard. Trail-Breaker is rated to haul up to 1,000 lbs. and will tow up to 3,000 lbs.

Reliable? Most Trail-Breakers ever built are still running. And the ones built today are even better because they have solid state ignition, sealed gear cases, improved frame design, better comfort and get this, they are now even quiet. The Trail-Breaker is the quietest gas powered off road vehicle in the world. ROKON has learned from a rich history of riding and listening to owners. This lead us to incorporate changes that will make Trail-Breakers last even longer. Easy to repair and maintain. A simple thing like the same bearing appears 18 times on the machine. Standard American nut, bolts and chain make repairs a cinch and easy for you to do the work. Parts are widely available and manuals easy to follow. After all, if you start simple and rugged, it should be easy to maintain.

Trail-Breaker is a trusted and long serving name in off road transportation. We remain dedicated to quality so you can count on a successful trip wherever you go. And now with the latest 6.6 hp Kohler engine, ROKONS have incredible power and performance to go with quiet running operations.

I think an ATV would be better though. Much more stable/more capability.

I saw a guy on TV that wanted to take one to Mt. Everst. The show gave a postive review of the off road capability but the downside is that the max speed is only around 10-20 mph. I would say that these are only for extreme off roading otherwise a dirtbike or ATV would be a lot more fun.

performance from a 6.6 horsepower engine.....isn't that an oxymoron?

Yes it's ugly. But it's a 2-wheeled Humvee, not a street rod.

Doubt you would want to wrap in chrome something that's just going to get bashed against a mountain side.

Personally, no desire and very little need for it

I've been riding off road motorcycles for more than 20 years and have not come across a single time that I would need this vehicle. Not only is it butt ugly but I'm sure that steering with a powered front wheel would be a major PITA.

Ever heard of a Rokon dealer??? Very hard to get parts and repair, I would bet. Unless that brutal 6.6 HP comes from a Briggs Sratton! All Hail BS

Kohler engines are common. All maintainence parts for them can be bought at normal places like Northern Tool, Harbor Freight, etc as many of the standard parts are analogous the go-cart, atv, and tractor parts.

Rokon's have been around a loooong time, and I knew people that had them for serious mountain riding decades ago. They will climb damned near anything. Top speed is no big deal as off-roading in seriously rough terrain is not done quickly anyway. 6.6 horsepower is plenty enough to carry the loads it was intended to carry (pretty damned heavy) so long as the engine is torquey at low rpm's and it is geared properly. Remember, it only takes one horsepower to carry you up a mountain and down the other side if it is a real horse, and less than one horsepower if it is your own legs doing the walking. Horsepower is not particularly germane when discussing off-road capability.

And ugly? What planet are you from? Who cares if it is ugly when it can haul your butt up the side of a mountain that you wouldn't be able to hike up? It is not designed to be pretty, it is designed to carry you up the side of a mountain.

I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I lived in an area like my father grew up in (western North Carolina in the Appalachians). Best off-roader I've ever used up there was a home-brew mini-bike powered by a simple single cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine.

Do you have need of a seriously heavy duty off road machine? This thing looks like the Wrangler Rubicon of mountain bikes. Well, maybe a hummer, haven't seen the sticker price

IF you do a lot of hard riding i imagine you would already know if a normal mountain bike would be enough. if it wouldn't, get this. If another bike would, then i would say get a normal bike.

Just looked through that again. Holy DAMN! That thing must have monster torque! 6.6hp ... and a 3000 lbs towing! Most 200hp cars are rated for that much if they have a towing package. 1000lbs hauling is pretty nice. that 2 300lb heavyweights adn 400lbs worth of food to along

Id expect that kind of performance from a 150hp chopper, not a 6.6 hp trail bike engine. Plus with the 2wd and all i bet you could drop it into gear and climb up your mountain at idle. Thats a pretty serious bike...

I've always been interested in Rokons. They are amazing machines. Not much on speed but amazing terrain crawlers.

I'd be interested. I used to ride a Yamaha XT-500 off road, and found having only one powered and narrow wheel to be very limiting when the ground gets soft.

I did like having all that low RPM power for the express reason that I could take on a hill at lower speeds than gys with smaller .cc and have an easier time dodging trees on the way up with plenty of tourque left over. Traction is always the problem it seems.

The only things I can see where a 4 wheeler ATV might have advantages would be in river crossings for starters. Having to maintain balance in a current might be more difficult than on a quad.

Also load capabilities. I see that it can carry lots of poundage, but can it be easily strapped on as a quad, or balanced ?

I'd love to take one of these for a spin with my quadding friend and see where it takes me. See if we could loose each other.

Also LOVE the idea of using common parts and standards so they can be repaired by the DIY guys. And looks don't matter to me, plus I kinda loke the look.

Honda is making something that looks a bit like this but more urban now. Some might call it ugly too.

Horsepower is also not terribly germane to towing capacity. It is as much based on what your chassis can support and what your brakes will stop as what your engine produces power-wise, and the power numbers that you should be more interested in for towing are torque numbers, just like off-roading.
