What are your thoughts on such things as the "Gumball 3000," publicized by <a href="http://www.teckademics.com/">Teckademics.com</a> and hosted by Maxamillion Cooper at <a href="http://www.gumball3000.com">Gumball3000.com</a>?

(This is different than the Cannonball Run, hosted by Car & Driver, during which legal speeds are driven to race tracks, where the cars are driven at street-illegal but track-safe speeds.)

If you don't want to visit the website, the basic rundown is that Teckademics is a "cutting-edge" corporation that is trying to professionalize and legitimize street racing. They publicize the Gumball 3000, billed as "Mischief Destroy," which is a race across whole regions. It started as a trek through Europe to parts in the former USSR in 1999 but, for 2002 and 2003, has migrated across the Atlantic, in a trip from New York to Los Angeles and a trip from San Francisco to Miami, respectively.

Participants are wealthy individuals with admittedly incredible cars who do their best not to get stopped by the police.

How long do you think they can get away with this? Or, how do they get away with this without the police just staking out the route on the assigned day? I'm curious, and also wondering if this is for real.

I think that rich people will always do what they want, but they're not helping racing by promoting an illegal event like this. It's a good thing that no one who has the authority to organize so many states highway patrol departments will ever hear about this. Those racers would be better to spend their millions building a road racing track in my hometown.

Looks like fun....at least from the videos I've seen.

I bought the Gumball 3K video and it was funny as hell. This damn foreigner in a blue AUDI wagon got pulled over about 50 times. And the Ferrari owners were totally focking up their cars. All of the paint got blasted off the fromt clip of the Modenas and Maranellos ... even the damn headlights had to be replaced. There was an F50 that was blasted by road desbris so bad that the front was worn down to the fiberglass.

It was cool to see those rich bastards trash their cars. It would be cool to legalize a race like that

I love watching these videos. In the latest (or what I think is the lastest preview video) They are driving along and the police are suddenly in front of them

A couple of them hang at the back of the pack and one Porsche driver actually hides under a bridge (after driving off the road lol) to get away from them.

I's love to take part in it :) But yes as Elitegibson said, I too would prefer if they spent the money on a racetrack in my hometown :P

there is a cannonball run, though. It's organized by none other than Car & Driver. They drive legal speeds all over the country to various race tracks, where they race the cars. Totally legal, and it's a BLAST to watch if it comes to a track near you. They run some totally insane cars out there.

If I were going to do something like that, I'd rather do the equivalent race that's been run in the Northern Territories of Australia, where there's no speed limits to break.

But yeah, that one guy got run off the road by a semi, after trying to pass on the right, cops wouldnt do anything about it -_-.

Video isnt worth the purchase IMO unless you get it for 5 bucks or less, it gets kinda tedious after awhile, the clips off the net are better.
