m coupe or vette
having a hard time deciding which one i'm going to get. any suggestions?
|
Both would be very satisfying to drive. Would this be your primary vehicle, or more of a weekend cruiser? The M will get a bit better gas mileage and has stunning handling and braking. While the vette lacks in interior styling (never liked GM interiors personally), it makes up for with that addictive torque. My step-dad has a 2.3 Roadster, and I love driving that car.. I wish it was an M Roadster so much!
|
M Coupe! It's way more rare than the 'Vette and it handles better since it's so small.
|
if the vette is a z06, i'd get the vette, otherwise, go german :)

Get the M Coupé! What a car! I like 'vettes too, but you can't beat a nice straight 6 (unless you can get a 12...).
|
One word: Corvette!
That's practically all I live by! I'm not able to buy me one yet, but I swear one of these days I'll have my very own America's true sportscar on the driveway! Yeah! |
how soon are you looking to buy?
like said before, if Z06, go vette, otherwise M. HOWEVER, if you can hold out until the NEW corvette comes out in about a year or so, i would DEFINATELY go with that. even the regular model is going to be *sweet* with many great improvements to the engine and suspension. |
BMW M Power- because it's better than sex.
|
Vette.

Painfully, I am not... have driven an M3 though, so I know what you mean (a little) :)
|
vette no question... you'll thank yourself when your engine doesnt explode.
|
I've a Beemer, I've had lots of fun trying M-Power for size; but would have to say that sex is better!
I do like the noise that the Vette makes (C5R sounded fab all night at Le Mans in 2001). I'm also a big fan of the HUD, but there's just nothing else like the M3C. |
z06 would own an m coupe. Sexier (imo) and probably significantly more fun to abuse.
The HUD, while it is cool, i find absolutely useless. Nothing on there i can't see on the dash...and it doesn't take that long to take a glance, so your eyes arent off the road long. Plus, you gotta focus on the display, rather than the road, to see the HUD display anyway... Cool, but uselss. If not the Z06, then id prolly say go with the bimmer. |

Get an Aston Martin, complete with all appropriate Q branch add-ons for whatever mission you're going on.

Don't bother saying 'Mercedes' without the 'Benz' if you're in my presence, either. :D |
BMW's are for yuppies. A vette is a man's car.
|
Go for the C-6!
|
M Coupe is a badass car. I'd take that even over a Z06.
Germans know how to build cars. It's more rare than a Vette. Vette's are all over the place. I've never even seen an M Coupe on the road. Plus, a Vette is a pile of GM garbage that'll most likely have many problems right from the factory. Almost everyone that I know who has bought a new GM vehicle, myself included, had a shitload of problems from day one. |
i have HUD in my Grand Prix and i must say i love it. it's just easier to use. granted i could have lived without it, but i dread the day now that i get a new car without it because it's spoiled me for years.

Id go with a Z06, saw a couple at the drag strip earlier today. very nice cars....never been a big fan of bimmers

But not just the C5-R, the regular C5 sounds like a real car as well! |
I can't remember the exact figures, but im sure the m coupe reaches 60 in 4.5 seconds? That's shit fast...
Don't really know much about vette's as I don't pay GM any attention, do they produce a car in the same price range as the m coupe that does 4.5 seconds 0-60 and 180mph when de-restricted? |
BMW M Coupe is 5.2 seconds 0-100 KMPH
Corvette Z06 is 3.9s o-60MPH Corvette Coupe is 4.6s 0-60MPH I'd still take the M, hands down. |
|
If anybody would give me an M3.....
I'd trade it in for a 'Vette! |
All Chevy's suck. Period. Unless that Vette is a Stingray, go for the Bimmer.
Redneck or Sophisticate? You decide. |
The other day I saw 11 'vettes in a 5 mile stretch along the same road.
Don't see many M cars, so if you don't want to have such a "common" car as a 'vette, get the M. I would imagine the Bimmer does better in inclement weather, too. |
M all the way.
|
Which interior do you like better? I personally love the looks of the vette BUT i HATE the interior because it feels so cheap. The M Coupe's interior is high quality and it feels and looks absolutely stunning.
|
Ohhh.... got the M..... so far ahead of a vette.....

i test drove both and the M is definitely more nimble and handles like it's on rails. I also got a lot more looks in the m coupe then the vette. On the other hand, i love the way the vette sounds and personally i like the styling better. Eitherway, i can't go wrong.
|
that above pic doesn't work:(
|
Personally I'd go with the Vette, more stylish, faster, get's more looks, and you don't have to worry about a car full of people bugging the hell out of you. I drove a 2002, they are sweet, basically the perfect american sports car. Grace, style and muscle. However, since you live in Maryland I'd have a car for the winter, I've heard Vette's can't ice skate too well.
|
I'm definitely biased, owning an M3 and all, but it's a good thing because I can give you some feedback. Now, first things first, does the MCoupe you're looking at have the 333hp engine or the older 240hp engine? 1999 and 2000 models have the 3.2L 240hp engine shared with the E36 M3. 2001 and 2002 models had the 3.2L 333hp engine shared with the E46 M3.
I own an E36 M3 with the 240hp engine. I'll tell you right now, it's the most potent 240 horses you'll ever use. BMW geared this engine for low end power so you'll see 0-60 times way lower than you'd expect of a 240hp car. While it wont posess the kick in the back torque of the Vette, you'll definitely be holding on when you punch it. Handling? In my mind it's no question. The M Coupe was built by BMW engineers in their spare time before they approached the head office with their idea. It's an enthusiast's machine built by enthusiasts. It's a brilliant drive. I don't think I even need to approach build quality. There's no comparison there. Hope this helps. http://www.movin2fast.com/modules/Ma...3/DSCF0092.jpg SLM3 |
the greatest AMERICAN sports car in history....or some ugly Honda-hatch-looking thing just because its german
You will get far more respect in a vette....well in my city anyway. Corvette is an attitude, an image. BMW says...I have a lot of money and i'm going to drive a status symbol so everyone knows it. edit: Not trying to offend anyone, I guess this just reflects my philosohpy of making my car faster and handle better myself, rather than just buying those things with lots of money. Just my .02 :D |
be different and go w/ the M coupe. Anyone can have a Vette. But the M coupe is more rare and unique. Plus the interior is more refined in the BMW
|
vette has more aftermarket options and it would be my choice
|
It depends on what you're looking for. If you want brute force get a vette, if you want precision get an M. The line becomes blurrier with the Z06 vette because it does handle really well, and the newer M's with 333hp are really fast. In the end you just have to test drive them both, sometimes individual preferences like shifter throw/position can make a huge difference that you just have to feel to decide which car you like the most.
|
M-Coupe, please.
It's a pleasure seeing that car. Vettes are for old men in they're mid-life crisis. And they're ugly. =) |
M it is
'cause M stands for "Must have"... :) |

The standard C5 is still one of the most well engineered driving machines ever to pound pavement, and is far too often slighted because it does not have (from the factory) the extra 50 HP that its ZO6 big brother does. |

Not that I'm anti M... you are comparing apples and oranges. Both cars are amazing machines, and I would love to own either. |
If you are going to buy a NEW car......get the BMW, I am living in Italy driving a 10yr old 520I and it is by FAR the best car I have ever owned.
Personally, I'd take that $50,000 and buy a classic muscle car. Something that will never depreciate and get 3 times more loooks than anything new! |
Just out of curiosity, what are the respective sticker prices?
|
Well, Blue book suggested retail for 2002s is 33-35k for both of em. (not the z06, just the 'vette coupe). So teh price is identical for all purposes.
As for safety and convenience features (not necesarily quality) the vette has a tilt wheel while the bimmer has side airbags and optional sunroof. Thats it. The vetter has 35 more HP, and 109 more lb/ft of tourque. Also makes it at 1800 less rpm. The vette has lower compression, and they get almost equal mileage with the vetter getting 1 more MPG in the city. negligable. Weight? basically identical. The vette is longer, wider and shorter. The vetter has far more cargo room, but a 40ft turning circle (thats huge) as opposed to teh 34 feet on teh bimmer. Info from http://autos.msn.com/compare/choose....=10325&pt=dual That being said, with teh expcetion of power, and even then, mainly just torque and the powercurve, they are identical in almost every regard. Its purely a matter of what feels better, and the image associated with each one. One may be of better build quality, but will cost more to fix when it does break. and all cars do break eventually. One may look cooler, but cost more to insure. Its all a matter of drivers opinion. Test drive em both and pick whichever one you find more enjoyable. Personally, i dont think i could drive a 'vette yet. They are friggin huge cars. They may look big in picture, but in person that thing is massive. And the HUD in the vette rules :D, though mainly pointless. Just whatever you do, dont even think of getting the red leather if you get a vette :shudders at the thought: |
Both are great cars so I'd just go with what feels better to you. If it were my cash I'd go with the Bimmer because its not as common, looks badass, and its much more nimble. The above poster said the vette has 40' turning circle! That's more than my Xterra 4x4!
|
Get which ever car you feel is more fun to drive. I am assuming you like the way both cars look. If that's the case, then it all comes down to which car you will enjoy driving more.
Now, if you asked which car would I buy. I would take the money and restore a '67 Mustang GT convertible (It's not enough to do a Shelby) :) Have fun with which ever car you choose, and remember, baby the paint, not the pedals |
