Engine noise

The engine in my car is really noisy but it is not a diesel. Any way to reduce some of the engine noise, being cost efficient.

Can you describe the noise at all? There are a lot of different things that could cause noise and even more ways to fix them. It could be anything from loud exhaust to noisy lifters if you are low on oil. Without more info it is hard to say but if there are no sounds in particular that are bothering you, its just the sound of the motor in general, exhaust would probably be your best bet.

I dont tihnk anything is wrong with it, it has always been kind of loud, not from the inside but from the outside. I think it is just the motor though.

In that case I would probably ask an exhaust shop how much they can quite it down. The only other thing I can think of is that often they put a liner on the underside of the hood which helps to reduce noise slightly. Not sure if your car has one or is even supposed to have one but it might help a little.

Hopefully others can come up with some more suggestions though.

I have one of these, the estate version, and I must tell you that the sound they make is one of the very finest you'll hear. To me a straight six engine is music to the ears. Worry not about upsetting people with your sublime harmonics, just drop a gear and give them a treat they'll tell their kids about when they get home.

Ditto on the hood liner.

If you're getting noise from the engine that's not normal (i.e., doesn't happen on other cars of the same make), try getting some Marvel Mystery Oil from your local auto parts store. I can quiet noisy engine components that have lost some lubrication.

I have a 325 e from 1987 and its not the quietest engine, but that is its normal state. I dont quite remember what it originally sounded like since I have added a K&N high flow air filter, changed the catalyst and exhaust. One thing is for sure though, inline 6s are the best.
