Best ~$6000 car around?
I'm looking for a used car to be used in commuting ~60 miles/day. Therefore, it MUST be good on gas. From what I see, a 1997ish Honda Civic might be my best bet but I'm looking for some expert advice from the kind ole folks here at TFP.
Suggestions? |

I'd vote Honda or Toyota, if you merely want to get there and back with no thrills or spills.

Looks like you just need it to go from Point A -> to Point B. So basically nothing sporty or special? Go for a Civic. I myself just bought a 96 Honda Prelude with 102k miles and it runs great. Honda's are one of the best engines made, so i would go for a Civic or Accord.

Get a 1995 Honda Civic VX hatchback. It has a 16v, 1.5L engine that gets 48 mpg in the city, and 55 mpg on the highway. You can easily find them for $5,500-$6,000.
Edit: spend some extra cash on some stiffer, lower shocks and some 15" wheels w/ 205/50-15 tires and you'll get go-cart handling, nearly 1g in lateral grip, and still over 50mpg on the highway. ![]()

I like the Civic EX 5 speed. If you are good at driving a manual you can get good gas milage, but it also is fun to drive because you can use all the power in the engine as possible. Plus they are as dependable as you can get. I have a 94 with 120K mi and I have never had a problem with this car, if you buy one with alot of miles make sure you change the timing belt. I lost mine downshifting into second, i was going to fast and it broke. No damage though. Thank God, but the five speed makes the low horsepower tolerable.

I sugest a Neon. Get a 97 or newer, by 97 they had the head gasket thing fixed. I have a 95 5-spd and i can get 38-41 mpg regulary and that is with a heavy foot and lots of in town driving. When I go on longer trips I can get a sollid 40-42 mpg.

I wouild definitely go german, less risk of theft (yes out of the nations top 25 cars stolen this year, 21 or so were japanese imports...) they have a serious track record for running strong for many 100k and they are unique on the road...not cookie cutter.

One of my freinds recently bought a 92 supra (the one before the last gen they made) for around 6500 a year a go. Can't imagine you couldn't find one for aroudn 6k now. It's sweet 240hp, rwd, probably short of looking for a firebird or camero you couldn't get much better performance.
