Ooh, AE86 mod thread!

BadNick 01-19-2008 07:58 PM

Awesome, good luck with the project. I got a big soft spot for the AE86. I hope since you got Jersey tags maybe I'll see it in person soon one day ...I'm from around Philly.

Tell me/us, if you don't mind, what's the deal with the zenki and kouki stuff?

Craven Morehead 01-19-2008 08:36 PM

Good luck dude. Looks like fun.

QuasiMondo 01-19-2008 09:34 PM

Zenki - before
Kouki - after

Used to identify minor updates during the life of the chassis, personally I think it's JDMism gone too far.

Is that a 3TC or 4AGE? (Sorry don't know toyota motors all that well)

My cousin and his friends are into the 70s corollas and some of the cars they've built have been lots of fun to drive.

Looks like a fun project. I know a few other people very into the AE86 platform as well. Not cheap cars to build and parts are getting harder to come by as the cars get older.

I helped my friend with his AE86 drift car...haltech, 11.1:1 compression, ITB's. I think he put down 180hp, I'll see if I've got a pic of his car/motor.

It's a 4AGE. 3TC's overhead valve pushrod engines with hemispherical combustion chambers.

They're actually still cheap to build, the only expensive thing about them is everybody trying to find a GT-S, where I went a different route and went with the oft-ignored SR5 which doesn't have all of the GT-S goodies, but can be easily bolted in. I'm spending less on building this car than I did with some of the Mitsubishis I had before this.

It hard around here to find a GTS being parted out so you can grab even the rear end, trans, and harness. I guess harness you don't need so much though since you're going dual carbs.

A lot of the interior trim and dash pieces are also hard to find here. A bunch of friends are hoarding door handle bezels, dash parts, even whole dashboards when they find them.

bobby 01-20-2008 07:59 PM

don't forget the brakes.....Brembo?

xoxoxoo

QuasiMondo 01-21-2008 08:49 PM

Rear end was picked up today, disc brakes and LSD, oh yeah (no pics, 'cause it's rusty as hell).

I did find a Toyota only salvage lot in eastern PA that's chock full of Toyota goodies. I'm going back next weekend to pick up a manual steering rack, so that'll be one less accessory belt I have to worry about losing. The trans between the SR5 and GTS is actually the same, you just need to swap the bellhousing because of the location of the starter is on opposite ends. A lot of folks have told me that the stock brakes are pretty good and that all I really have to do is get some good racing pads. If I were making this into a show car, Brenbos would definitely be on the list.

I actually got lucky, only two trim pieces are missing, the dash is uncracked, and I have a friend who's being forced to get rid of all of his extra parts because his boss frowns upon his pack rat ways. I don't know where you live lt1s10, but the guy I picked up the rear end from is parting out a GT-S coupe and he lives in Jersey. If you have somebody looking for stuff, let me know and I'll get you in touch with him.

Head's getting sent out to be reworked, will post pics when it comes back.

You found a manual steering rack?! O_o You know you can sell those for like $500, right? Are you on club4ag?

The stock brakes should be fine with good rotors and pads, hachi's don't weigh anything.

Here's a bad pic of my friend's motor right before he sold it:

Head's back!

I'll try to get better pictures to show how beautiful of a job they did. If you live in the NY/NJ/CT tristate area, you gotta give Charlie Olsen a call at Olsen Engines. He does it all, from big blocks to Harley V-twins, to everything in between. He's built up a couple of my Mitsubishi engines before and I can't say enough good things about his workmanship.

Updates will be slow going for a bit, my car building slush fund has run low, so I gotta budget a bit tighter, and the vendors I've gone with seem to have forgotten how to handle customers, in particular one shop who failed to tell me that the pistons I ordered from them are on backorder :shakehead:. Header's on it's way soon and all I need are studs for the manifolds and head and the engine's ready for assembly.

Excuse me if you saw this one already, but I just saw this clip ...truly amazing and the sounds are incredible.

Recent events have forced me to put Project Ugly Betty on indefinite hiatus. I'm going to try to finish reassembling the engine, but I think it'll be a while before anything happens with this car.

Fotzlid 02-14-2008 10:30 PM

Lets see...dream job vs building kick-ass drift car....get your priorities straight, will ya...

:)

BadNick 02-15-2008 11:15 AM

hey, when you get back to the project it will be even more cool. Good luck.
