The old record was set in 1983 by David Diem and Doug Turner, who piloted a Ferrari 308 from New York to Los Angeles in 32 Hours, 7 minutes.

Alex Roy and Dave Maher, piloting a BMW M5 reveal they've broken the record last year, completing the trip in 31 Hours, 4 minutes. They waited until any possible statue of limitations had expired before going public.

To accomplish this feat, they had to log an average speed of at least 90 MPH.

Stupid? Yes. Ballsy? Definitely. Immortalizingly cool? You'd better believe it.
*EDIT*
The routes that Roy plotted out can be found here

Very cool. I would never have the balls to do that. Cheers to him for being a ballsy one.

I dig the equipment...

respect

Interesting, thanks for posting it. Now I'm looking at 30 hours as sort of the "4 minute mile" target; it seems possible if everything is perfect.

32 hours7min wow! A lot of things have to go your way to get a great time. Congrats to those guys and their team. I wonder if anyone was ever hurt, participants or by-standers, during these "races"?

Wow, the wired essay was awesome, one of the best things Ive read in a long time.
I totally understand the urges to do something like that, I would loved to have been copilot on that run! there is a something about driving fast, going beyond the normal limits of sanity its something that gets into your blood and never leaves, once you go fast you never want to stop.

You know I keep hearing this music playing each time I come to this thread or read that article...

Willravel 10-19-2007 07:20 AM

Yeah, I heard about that last year.

Cynthetiq 10-19-2007 07:53 AM

here's the opening credits to Canonball Run, but the music just isn't as catchy as...

Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin'
Ah we gonna do what they say can't be done
We've got a long way to go, and a short time to get there
I'm eastbound, just watch old Bandit run

so thats what you do when you're so rich that life has lost its meaning?

Willravel 10-19-2007 08:11 AM

I'd call that an amazingly fun time. If one can find happiness in racing, then more power to them.

Ilow 10-19-2007 12:11 PM

pretty amazing expedition. He set it up like a military campaign, sort of loses some of the spirit of the old runs, I guess, but the old guys didn't have to compete with traffic congestion and police advancements, so I suppose it's a wash.

Cynthetiq 10-19-2007 11:33 PM

supposedly someone else did it faster some sort of drama about him not following the original route.

I'd still give Alex Roy the benefit of doubt. I remember about a year ago, there was an article in Automobile magazine where he and the writer raced from NYC to Miami to see if they could beat out a package they overnighted to the same destination. They beat the FedEx guy with an hour to spare.

I'm trying to figure out...if all they had to do was average 90mph, that just doesn't seem impressive. I've held higher averages than that over a 400 mile run. In broad daylight.

Now, I do understand the time that they did it for is impressive. Got to sleep sometime...

What do you mean you don't see why it's that impressive? I would think a NASCAR guy would be the quickest to appreciate this. It's impressive because every minute that they spend doing zero miles per hour at a gas station, in traffic, whatever, must be equaled by a much higher speed to average the 90. When I drive to work, there are about 15 miles where I can (and do) do 80mph or more, but there are a few miles on each end where there are stoplights, towns and traffic, so even though I'm doing a respectable speed for the majority of the trip, my average speed is probably under 50 or 60.

isn't that from Smokey and the Bandit? awesome movie

It's cool and the old speed demon in me would have loved to done it or tried.

The issue I have is that if you hit slow traffic you have to pick up the speed elsewhere. ANYONE driving over 100 MPH is nuts, your reaction time to anything is nil and you put innocent people at risk.

Fun yes, dangerous to innocent people most definitely.... not worth it.

abccrazy123 11-28-2007 02:20 PM

I like how many variables there were. They had that one bad scare with the cops where they had to swerve off the highway and hide. Plus the traffic must fluctuate so much in so many different places. I guess the record will probably get beaten again.

Has anyone noticed that Wired seems to be one of the only popular magazines that actually does real reporting? Every other magazine seems to be turning tabloid. With that said - has anyone come across other magazines with decent articles?
