Emblem Removal
 

Hi,
On my new GTI, the dealer stuck their emblem right under my GTI emblem on the back hatch. It seems to be just stuck on with an adhesive. I want to peel it off but am afraid of ruining my paint. Any suggestions.

The first one I'd say is go to the dealer and ask them to remove it. They will.
Second thing you could do (which is how I removed all the badges off my PT) is, get a hair dryer and a plastic spatula, hold the hair dryer over the sticker and gently push it off with the spatula as the dryer is running. Get some GooGone hold a cloth under the sticker area and squirt the GooGone onto the residue, using the cloth to rub it in and remove the leftover glue. Wax the area.

ditto on the hair dryer, or use a heat gun if you can get your hand on one. The heat will loosen the adhesive. just make sure you don't hold it in one spot for too long as you will blister your paint. the key is to get the emblem itself hot enough so it releases for the adhesive. good luck

Dental floss to get the badge off, a credit card (or gift card) and some goo gone to get the adhesive off. Your paint will be fine.

The hair dryer idea and dental floss idea combined works well IMHO.

I actually melted a fingernail....it curled under from holding the dryer over it so long during one of my badge removals.
Heat guns are way too powerful for something like this. I used one to remove 80 years of paint and varnish to the bare wood in one stroke-using it on a new car? Makes me shudder!
Edited to add: Anyone buying a car from a dealer and not wishing that ugly sticker-just tell them you won't take delivery if it's on there. They will remove it, probably put on plate frames instead, which you can then remove at home. I told both dealers we are not billboards and, unless there's a discount for those things, we would not accept the car with them on. The order for mine had big red marker letters across it, "NO DEALER STICKERS" written by the salesman.:thumbsup:

The only reason i suggested a heat gun, is that it concentrates a large amount of heat on a very small area. This allows one to heat up the emblem quickly without heating up the surrounding area very much since the car body will basically act as a large heat sink. That being said, a hair dryer is probably a safer bet for someone who hasn't done this before.

Everyone is dead on w/ the ideas, just my 2 cents worth, the dental floss is good, but fishing line is even better. Fishing line will zip thri adhesive in a heartbeat. We used it to remove some crappy side door molding off my buddies 2002 Corvette.

Fishing lines leave tons of the foam tape behind but keeps you from breaking the badges. Hairdryer might warp and bend/break the badges while your pulling. Just take your time with whatever you choose to do. You can always tell anything that has beed rushed.

I did this to my RX8 and my friends WRX...hair dryer, fishing line. That will take it off, and then use bug and tar remover to get anymore adhesive off.
