CV Joints?
Well I think my CV boot has been cracked for about 6 months, since I've been hearing crackle-crackle-crackle everytime I turn. I haven't taken it in yet mostly because I don't have time, but also becuase I'm not sure what it'll cost me.
What's the average CV boot/joint cost? I've got a 93 Plymouth Laser (Mitsubishi Eclipse) if it changes the price much. And if they change one, do they have to change both? |
they don't have to change both, but keep in mind that if one is worn out, that the other has just as many miles and is likely worn out also. Since it's the boot that went bad the reason for the CV going bad is that the grease was thrown out through the crack, not because it's worn, so you could probably get by having just the one changed. I'd say you're looking at 100-150 bucks parts and labor to have the one changed.

The clicking noise isn't the boot. It's the joint. You may as well replace the axle. The cost is about the same. We sell CarQuest axles for $100, plus labour. Boots only are around $60, and the labour is the same. A joint alone will probably have to be acquired from a dealer, at a substantial cost. Probably $200 said and done gets you the CQ axle...installed.

Yup, get a new axle. It's just better that way. Shouldn't cost you more'n $150 including labor.
And get it fixed. If the joint seizes, bad things happen. |
We sell a complete new shaft for $59.99. Someone in your neighborhood should be around the same dollars. If you or a friend have the talent, an hour's worth of greasy hands should fix you up! If you have to hire the job out, DE137 seems rather accurate.

I agree $200 for parts and labor should do it. Better replace both axles. The more they click and the louder- the faster they had better be replaced. If you've heard clicking for 6 months I'd say you are on borrowed time.
