How A Lost Bear Received His Name

One day, a golden colored stuffed bear, fell out of a moving car, landen with a thud and tumbled down the street. The bear lay in the middle of the street for a very long, long time. Several different types of buses, trucks, and cars passed by but no one stopped. Children on thier way to Cornwell School passed by the bear but even they did not see the bear and on their way home, the children still failed to notice the bear again.

Every time a vehicle passed by, the bear would say, "Ouch! Oh! Ooh! Ouch!" as he tumbled along the street in the direction the vehicle was going. "I wish someone would pick me up out of the street. I am tired of rolling back and forth, each time a car, truck or bus passes by" said the bear. This continued for several days.

Then one day a young lady, named Abigayle, noticed something fuzzy and lumpy lying in the middle of the street. She pulled over to the side of the street, shut off the engine, took off her seatbelt, and got out of her truck so she could see what the fuzzy item was. Standing on the sidewalk, Abigayle saw the item. "Oh! that fuzzy lump is a bear!

The bear was not a golden color any more. By this time, the bear was so dirty and had dark black spots all over. In fact, very little fur on the bear was still a golden color.

Abligayle made sure no traffic was coming before she went into the street to get the bear. She carefully picked up the bear out of the middle of the street and walked back to her truck. Abigayle set the bear on the seat next to her and started the engine. She put on her seatbelt and then continued on her way.

The bear was wondering where Abigayle was going and what she was going to do with him. Abigayle was the only one who had bothered to stop and pick him up out of the street.

Again the bear wondered, "`Would Abigayle take me home and give me a bath?' He knew he was a very dirty bear by the way that Abigayle looked at him." Abigayle had a quizzical look on her face. A look that said, "This is the weirdest looking bear I have ever seen. The golden color is very unique but I have not seen a bear with such dark black spots before."

Abigayle was on her way home after visiting her friend, she thought she could was the bear with her laundry. Abigayle decided to stop at the grocery store to buy several items that she needed including liquid laundry detergent.

Abigayle stopped the truck in front of the grocery store and went inside. The bear wondered where abigayle went and patiently waited for her to come back. It seemed like forever before Abigayle came back to the truck.

When Abigayle finally returned, she had everything that she needed plus extra liquid laundry detergent. The bear was happy to see her return; he thought Abigayle had forgotten about him. After everything was loaded into the truck, the two of them were finally on the way to Abigayle's house.

When they arrived at Abigayle's house, she gathered the bear, the grocery bags, and the liquid laundry detergent and went inside.

Once inside Abigayle's house, the bear looked around. He noticed that Abigayle's house looked very nice. The bear noticed a big over sized couch that had different shades of purple flowers and a matching chair. Abigagle set the bear in a white whicker rocking chair next to a full-length mirror.

Abigayle then went to get a wet sponge from the kitchen and some of the liquid laundry detergent to clean the bear.

Once the bear saw his reflection, he said,"Oh My! I did not realize how dirty I had become." He then woudered `Would Abigayle give hime a home or would she give him away.'

Abigayle tried to clean all the dirt, dust, and dark black spots off the bear with the sponge and liquid laundry detergent. She tried and tried and tried; but Abigayle could not get the bear clean. The bear was just to dirty.

Abigayle decided to put the bear into the washing machine. The bear thought the washing machine was kind of calming after rolling back and forth in the street. After the washing machine finished, Abigayle notived that the bear was cleaner but still was a little dirty.

"The bear needs to be washed one more time," said Abigayle. She felt sorry for the bear because he had to go into the washer a second time but the bear thought, "I think I would enjoy going back into the washer. It was ratherrelaxing." After the bear's second wash Abigayle put the bear into the dryer. The bear made a "thunk" noise as he went around and around inside of the dryer. This, the bear did not enjoy.

When Abigayle pulled the bear out of the dryer, she could not beleive the appearance of the bear. The bear was the most beautiful gold, orange, and yellow color that Abigaylehad ever seen.

After Abigayle saw how beautiful the bear looked, she decided the bear needed a name, so she decided to call the bear "Goldenrod" after a color of paper that was gold, orange, and yellow.

Abigayle set the bear down in the same white wicker rocking chair she had set him in beforehe had been washed. The bear thought, "Goldenrod is a great name!" After he saw his reflection in the full-lengh mirror.

So from that day on the bear was known as Goldenrod. Goldenrod is a very happy bear and continues to live with Abigayle to this day.

This wouldn't be autobiographic by any chance, would it?

I very much enjoyed reading it. I'm a sucker for childrens stories with good endings.

I would suggest continuing to work on characterization - why do the characters do what they do?

My honest opinion?

That was cute to the point of being a tear jerker.

Of course, I'm a sentimental fool for stories like this.

Include some depth on Abigayle. Give that character some more personality.

How absolutely adorable!
I know a special little child who would love to hear this story. May I have your permission to read it to them?
