Allright, I know this is probably not a good idea...but I have been thinking of parting n some Psylocibin fun aka magic mushrooms. Obviously, not a good thing to do under any circumstance. However, I am currently on Effexor XR and i am wondering if anyone has done mushrooms while on it, and if so what was the result? Is it something to avoid all together, is it safe?

Taking psyilocybin containing mushrooms while on an MAOI can dramatically increase the effects of the experience. MAOIs are most commonly found in the prescription anti-depressants Nardil (phenelzine), Parnate (tranylcypromine), Marplan (isocarboxazid), Eldepryl (l-deprenyl), and Aurorex or Manerix (moclobemide). Ayahuasca also contains MAOIs (harmine and harmaline). Check with your doctor if you are not sure whether your prescription medication is an MAOI.


Thats from erowid. I have no idea what type of drug it is your taking, but prescription stuff and heavy hullucinogenics generally arnt a good combo :hmm:

Edit: I'd like to point out that magic mushrooms give you the high via their poison, so be careful with that too. Not to say that they're not fun though.

I can't unequivocally say that the two drugs will interact and cause you harm. But it seems to me that this is one of those cases where the old axiom 'better safe than sorry' hold true.

I can tell you want to... but you know you shouldn't. Doubly you more than most people. So if you're looking for somebody to give you permission, ("Well, _he_ said it was all right...") ask yourself rationally: is it okay to risk my brain on the sayso of an anonymous somebody on an Internet discussion board?

When drug companies do clinical trials on their new drug, they go through a pretty serious exam by the FDA and the scientific community to ensure that the drug is safe, and what it claims it does it actually does.

When Marketing Effexor (an anti-depressant, I read from the website) they do trials where they give the drug to half of the group and give a sugar pill (called placebo) to the other half. Noone knows which drug they are taking, but their bodies and mood is studied to see if it makes a difference.

Scientists must prove that their drug does more good than harm (usually little side-effects like watery eyes or vivid dreams are no problem, but bad ones like seizures and bleeding are a big deal) and then the drug goes to market.

What does all this have to do with you? Well my friend, if you read it again, you will notice that nowhere does it talk about illicit drug interactions; drug interactions usually fall under categories like Liver matabolizing drugs or Water Soluble drugs...

What do shrooms do? They are psychoactive drugs. They fuck with the way you see things and interpret reality. This is usually a good experience, because if it was bad people wouldn't do it. However, in your case, you are on medication to fight a mental disorder, whether it be social anxiety or mood swings or depression. Your brain is not functioning normally (not your fault, and I am not calling you crazy) and therefore the medication you are on should help.

Why in the world would you want to fuck with your brain? In this case, the KNOWN RISKS FAR OUTWEIGH THE POSSIBLE REWARDS.

I would talk to the doctor that prescribed the drug Effexor to you, and ask him/her. You know what the answer will be already, don't you? Please don't even consider walking down this road.

Just be careful, I shrooms once in college (back in the 80s :P ) and I wont say that its was the best high I've had but it was damn good, but looking back I wouldn't do it again. The people around you can make you do stupid and perhaps harmful shit. But the biggest point is its harmful to your body and adding in a prescription med could damage your body..

However, think about it man. Effexor is altering your brain chemistry. So will the shrooms. Is that really a good idea?

Nardil is horrible. My girlfriend almost died from it. I wouldn't advise it.
