Detroit Lions Sign Troubles

You may have heard about how lousy the Lions are - this year - again. But the point of this thread is to open discussion on certain behaviors and possible rights of free speech.

This past weekend, many fans at a Lions game showed their displeasure at and interest in the firing of Lions GM & CEO Matt Millan by holding signs that said "Fire Matt", etc. Security had them remove these signs. They even had a guy that wrote the same thing on his t-shirt cover the shirt or leave. One fan running with his sign was tackled (that security officer should be on the Lions defensive line!!).

What's up with that?

So, what are your thoughts on signs at sporting events like football games and how far should security be able to go if the signs aren't profain, etc.??

Who owns the Silverdome? If city property perhaps there may be a case for free speech. If the Lions own it, they should be able to have some control over what gets put up and what doesn't.

I was a season ticket holder for the ny giants... there's a no sign policy at the stadium, no matter what the sign says, and security will remove them... Which is fine.. In the icebox that is giants stadium... in years where they couldn't beat a powder puff team... the chants from the crowd calling for the heads of certain coaches would get pretty funny. There was one game, during the Ray Handley year... where the chants of Ray Must Go were so loud, a television time out was taken to get the crowd to settle down...

Signs at games are stupid... most of the time they really say nothing, except for someone looking for their 5 seconds of fame...

When you go onto someone else's property, in this case a football stadium either owned or leased for the particular event by the Lions, you have to follow their rules. A ticket admits you to the game, it doesn't give you carte blanche to act as you please.

The first amentment applies solely to the government restricting free speech. Private institutions are free to do as they like.

To sum up: Thier house, thier rules. If you don't like it, don't go.

And they block the view of the people behind you. Signs are stupid.

Just an update...they do allow other signs. Also, to them size doesn't matter as one guy was ejected for sign written on a brown paper bag. I can see many benefits of a no sign (or umbrella) rule. Selective enforcement is what is troubling.
