I told my boss I was moving in!!
I am the Service Manager of a Canadian Tire store and for several months I have been pleading with my boss for more staff on the counter. The dept is open from 7:30 am to 9 pm and I have 2 full time service writers and myself to cover 6 14 hour shifts. The techs in the shop work every other day from 8-9 and love their shifts and for a while I had the writers working the same shifts( m-w-f one week and t-th-s the next) with me working 5 8-5 shifts.
The real fun started right after I changed the shifts to the same as the rest of the store, either 8-5 10-7 or 12-9 so that we all worked together and overlapped shifts allowing for ample help and breaks. My most experienced writer gave his notice ( found a job with better pay and was sick of working understaffed) and while my other writer was on vacation he found another job closer to home and came back to work only to give his notice. This left me trying to hire 2 new writers and get them ready to work with customers while maintaining a great level of service. The first 3 new guys I have hired have done all the computer training and put in 1 day on the counter and promptly quit( the job is fast paced and very demanding ). Finally we reach the moving in part of the story----- I am now in a position where I have to work all the shifts m-sat 7:30-9:30 by myself. How do I get new people hired, trained and ready to work while I am doing the work of 2 service writers and trying to maintain my department and deal with my techs and their issues. My last question is this---- since I am on salary and will only get paid for 40 hours for working 84, how do I get paid and what is the best way to get a raise out of this adventure. Keep in mind that these shifts allow for no breaks or meals, as there is nobody to spell me at the counter. Hoping to survive the next couple weeks---- Neddy   |
ugh - i remember christmasses like that back when i worked retail... overtime might not be an option, but you might want to negotiate with your boss (in writing) some comp time-- like an extra weeks vacation or a bunch of half days here and there... for the raise - -keep a record of the hours you are working and keep the customer service up to a high standard - if the customers are happy, you've got a much better bargaining chip...
For staff-- school is starting up soon -- what about interns or high school or college work study positions... |
Whatever you agree, I'd get written confirmation that you will only be required to do all the extra hours for a limited time period.
It's one of the things that the European Union has been good on - there is a legal requirement that nobody can be compelled to work more than 48hrs a week. |
Break your own leg.... no, your hand!
No, don't do that. Eat some really old meat, or eggs and turn in to work with salmonella poisoning. Then take some time off to show your boss what the place would be like without you and negotiate your raise from the hospital. Alternatively, you could always tell him to his face that you want more money. In my experience, employers always need to be reminded when it's pay-review time. |
As JW said - you can't beat saying "give me more money"
|
It's *always* worked for me when I go in and just ask for more...
|
See, it *always* works. Just do it.
Your working 84 hours and being paid for 40. You've had your salary halved. |
Good luck and i hope you make it through it! I would make sure whoever is beyond your manager knows about all these developments. I would not trust my immediate supervisor to tell them. Make sure they know so if production or complaints happen do to understaffing its not your ass in the fire as your doing everything you can to keep the ship afloat!

my immediate supervisor is the owner/operator of the store and seems to think i am superman on the cheap cuase my arguements for a raise fall on deaf ears most days-----oh well onward( by the way Im at the end of a 14 hr shift as we speak) |
Anyone who works 80+ hours and gets paid for 40 has a perfect sitaution to make a comical argument for being given a raise in the name of fighting Communism.

Um...I thought the labour law forbids employee from working that many hours?
Then again...I could be wrong... |
Why should the employer change anything? He's just halved (or more!) his labor costs.
Either call in sick or give notice. I assure you that will steer things toward a resolution. I would normally say labor laws are being violated, but in a salaried position, they may not be. |
