Well seeing as you are now "free and single" (quoting a friend here), just let it all hang out and if you see any opportunities, take them!

tip #2: hit on another girl tip #3: make a movie |
exactly how old are you?
big tip....if you are actually old enough to be on TFP, which I doubt, how about writing in such a way that people actually want to read of your post (i.e. spell all your words out not using "net speak"). |
On the off chance that you haven't been banned for being 17...
Drink lots of caffeine - You'll regret it come 2 in the morning and you just want to go to sle ep. Don't eat too much because being at the dance and feeling like ass isn't fun. Get a nice tux, when you're out there big-pimpin' it'll feel better then wearing something not so nice. |
Man, you people are quick to jump on a person by the way he types. Damn.
Anyway, just get with a group of friends, ask some girls to dance, maybe take one out after the prom for a night around town. Let it go from there. |

Yeah, it ain't like the movies, not everyone gets laid after prom. Just go and hang out. If you hadn't already bought tickets (which I assume you have) I would suggest just not going. It's not that fun. |

but maybe i'm just bitter because my prom really did suck compared to my friends' schools :( i don't think you should be asking us for ideas of how to have fun. My idea of fun may contrast greatly from your idea of fun. just do what you normally do with your friends to have fun. Oh, but make sure those actions are "crowd appropriate" |
Way to scare people off guys.....

And sorry, I think the answer to that silly question is simple- go on your own or with another group of friends, and dance/have dinner/meet other girls. Also, I hope you're 18+; I've been banned before for my age. It sucks to sit on the sidelines and cry about all the fun you're missing. |
la petite moi, I do not use a search button either. Does that make me a 16 year old? A bad poster? Post quality shouldn't be judged by the writing style, no matter how attrocious it is. It should be judged by content. Clearly, content was somewhat missing from the original post, but I am speaking in general. This isn't the first time posters have ganged up on somebody who types less than perfect.

I can read it as fluently as I can your typing, petite. It's the 1337 speak that bothers me.
|
I couldn't understand half of it and I'm truly thinking this kid is not 18.....oh!! ne1...anyone....sheesh....nope, not 18....
|
I have a 21 year old friend who types like that in chats. He's a very intelligent guy, but online he chooses to type that way. I just don't understand how you can pass a judgement on the intelligence level by looking at the way a person types online.
|
I have zero advice for you. However, if anyone saw the OC last week, there was a hilarious little monologue from George Lucas about his prom. Comedic gold. :D Oh, and the fun happens afterward.
|
I'm a lot more inclined to use the l33t speak for a msn messenger or text messaging, but I use it because it's convenient and I'm over 18. I think the big clue is that he's asking for advice for his prom. This suggests he's what, 16 - 18? Deduction, guys. :p Anyway, whatever that's beside the point.
I missed my 'ball', (as we call em over here) for my ex who didn't live in my home city .. So yeah, just enjoy the night man, it might not be perfect, you might not meet "the one" but dressing up is always great fun. Haha, me and my friends dress up out of our own accord nowadays just for kicks, it's always great to put on a nice blazer or tux and feel all blinged out before clubbing. :) |
But still, over 18 and still in high school? must have been a tough journey, congrats! and good luck with the rest of your life.

This is a mixed board. Not everyone can read 1337 speak... if you want to communicate with the board you need to be able to communitcate in a manner that we can comprehend. |

just to jump in: it's all about first impressions, you only get one chance to make a first impression. My parents spent a lot of time drilling manners and comportment into me for just that reason. |

Regarding "acceptable" writing style; we had a very interesting and constructive discussion in the thread Dyslexics and Message boards; remember that not all people who write poorly are being lazy. However, I don't see that it applies in this case, since Shani was the one who started the Dyslexia thread, and even she said:

Maybe. Since Grade 13 was removed from Ontario's educational system, bringing it in line with most other provinces, grads tend to be 17 at the old end. But I guess it's not unusual to get an 18 yo... |

Oh...and add me to the list of those that cannot stand leet, aol chat, or "messenger" speak. Reading a post should not be a draining experience. I'm not even going to touch "ebonics". That one just boils my blood. And one last thing. Don't worry about the age thing. If he is underage...it'll come out in the wash. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But it will come out. Right, LPM? ;) |

Don't go to prom. Someone will spike the punch, girls will cry, no one gets laid and the token nerdy girl will get mad at Freddie Prince Jr. for betting that he could make her hot.
*Perfectly squenced dance scenes follow.* |

My tip. Dance! Even if you think you can't dance, half the guys there CAN'T if you look for it. And most girls care that you WILL dance more than whether you do it good because they love dancing and showing off that they can. They're just dying for a guy to ask em. Sing. Have a good time regardless of whether you're alone or not. And if you look, they'll be girls who unfortunately had to go stag too. Ask em to dance. Then chat em up the next day at school. You may even find your next girlfriend. If theres an after party or 2 or 3 or 4, hit em up. You're bound to find someone available.
Good luck man! Sorry for your loss. Asta!! |

Prom, as with anything, is what you make it. Be a wallflower, and that's the kind of prom you can expect. Be a mover and a shaker (though, mind you, not annoying) and it has the potential to be one of the best nights you'll have for a long time coming. |
The only 17-year-olds graduating from my high school were the ones with June, July, maybe some August birthdays. But that was still the first thing that popped in my head when I read it because...

The TFP is, overall, a place for friendly and intellectual discourse. "ne1 want 2 chat hit me up ladies 2fine2Bsingle blaze my AOL @ foshizzle16"-type writing is hardly intelligent and hardly conversational in this forum. I don't care how old or smart you are, if you write like that in here, you will be asked to clean it up to real english, or people will flat-out ignore you. Posting that way is not "another way to write" or "another type of communication"... it's bastardized AOL-kiddie-speak, it looks dumb in here, and it doesn't fly in here. Quote:
I've chatted for more than 10 years online, many of you much much longer than that, and i've also modded here for quite a while. Overwhelmingly, when a person comes and posts like that in here, they are found to be less than 18 years of age, or right at 18. It's just fact. Happens pretty much every time. So, there's the official word. We can all go back to the topic now. Thanks. :) |
I am in complete agreement with Analog.....if indeed one feels the need to communicate in childspeak.....take it somewhere else
We have never been happy with it here....and never will be |
i actually have to try harder to type in "net-speak." Maybe it's cause i'm in college, and so I write a lot of papers. But writing "ne1" instead of "anyone" actually takes more effort. Now you see that I used "cause" instead of because. I think that's from reading a lot of fiction, where it's actually acceptable to use "Cause" cause that's how people talk. I don't say "N E one" when I'm talking, I say anyone.

As Kwise and Texan have stated - HAVE FUN ! Dance ! Don't be afraid nor let your inhibitions get in the way of trying that or approaching that girl who also doesn't have a date either [hey, that situation is improbable, but not impossible].
One lesson that I learned from high school [which will end on friday] is that the experiences are whatever you make of it - so, I'd say don't be too intimidated by the others' discouraging posts...[I'm not intending on flaming you for your views] Let go and don't be afraid of the fun that can happen - just remember that it can happen without alcohol too. I recommend to go to your after-prom as well if there's one at your school, or just go to the after-prom if you can, if you're more a wallflower type who doesn't enjoy big social events such as dances... Good luck, and let us know of your experience, catcha back on the flipside, will. |
