Moving out

A friend of mine is having trouble with her parents, and wants to move out. The problem is she's only 18, and is in university at the moment, and living at home because its only a 10 minute drive away. Is there any economical way she could survive moving out and continuing her education?

No. Even rooming with somebody is going to cost her hundreds a month. She'd have to work at least half-time, probably more, to live, which means a) she cuts down on classes, or b) she has no time to do anything but work or study every damn day from dawn til dusk, or c) she cuts back on classes. If life is _so_ bad at home that she has to leave, those are her choices.

Or, move in with some guy who's willing to subsidize her. But I guarantee that a relationship with such an unequal balance of power will not last and will end messily.

unless she becomes live-in help somewhere and does her studies around the work she might have to suffer the parents a bit longer

short of becoming a stripper, I don't see that she'll be able to do this.

I don't see why not. I went to years of college on my own and was living on my own when I started. Why couldn't she just rent a room and get a part-time job? Plenty of college students do this, I don't see why everyone thinks it's so impossible.

Have you tried to help with her parents? Know what the problem is?

Those things take effort, on both sides.

Your friend shouldn't move out no matter what.

I had a hell of a time with my parents this last year because my mother has been undergoing chemotherapy. Her emotions have been up and down like a rollercoaster, and it's been next to impossible to live peacefully with her.

Nonetheless, I realise that by forfeiting my parents' aid, I would be flushing money down the toilet when I could be milking my parents. Instead of encouraging her to move out, tell your friend to take more classes or get a job. That will help college go by more quickly (and hence, she can move out a little more easily) or help time pass.

If she moves out would she get a job? She could survive this way, it depends on her priorities? A free-ride is nice, and should take some thought before throwing it away, but surviving outside the parent's place is very possible.

I moved out of my parents house at 18, worked full time, and went to school part time. It wasn't fun, but it is possible if you want it bad enough. She may not like the compromises that she has to make, but the rest of her life will be about making choices and accepting responsibility for them.

Don't you guys have cheap youth apartments over there?

I'm living in one of those until I'm done with my education; I only pay 337 dollers in rent which I can easily afford with my salary.

La Petite Moi makes a good point... there are a lot of savings to be had by living at your parents. She should spend less time at home. Treat it like a dorm with a really annoying roommate. Study in the library, etc.

Go home to sleep and eat.

Otherwise, she should look for otherstudents in need of a roommate and get a part-time job to pay for the room. If this means she has to take fewer classes each year and thereby take more time to graduate, so be it.

She can easily afford to get a P/T job and live with roomates, I did it and I know many others that did as well. I guess I have more respect for someone who does things on their own instead of all handouts from their parents.
