Job searching out of town

So the time has come for me to look for a new job. This job is pretty dead end, and my lease on my apartment is up in a few months. And my boyfriend lives 6 hours from here. So this is the perfect opportunity to job search.

Have any of you had this experience before? Looking for a job out of your area? How did you go about it?

I'd say it depends on if you know where you want to look for a job.

If you have a specific area in mind, first ask anyone you know in that area if they know of any jobs. If you don't have any leads there, I've found that the best way to get a job is to look up companies in the yellow pages, especially ones in the industry you want to get work in. This worked for me when I needed a job, and my wife also (she got a job at a law firm this way). I find the Yellow pages way works because you will find a lot of places that know they need to hire someone but haven't put the effort to put in an ad anywhere. And all of the ad places have 100s of people applying so it lessens your chances.

If you don't care where you want to work, I would check with everyone you know again, and also checking the big job search boards like monster.com, yahoo! jobs, etc. Also find the local paper and check their online version, they usually include the classifieds which include job postings.

Good idea with the yellow pages :)

I'm looking for the Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY area. I've been looking a bit on one of Buffalo's newspapers websites. Like you said though, there are so many people applying for those jobs...

try http://buffalo.craigslist.org/. This site has every kind of classified ad for cities all over the world.

That's how I found my apt when I moved to NY.

*bump*

Anyone else have any insight?

Move somewhere where you know the most people. It'll make things a lot easier.

knowing people is a huge plus. most good apartments and good jobs change hands through a network of friends. hopefully your bf can help you out if you're looking where he lives.

I'd also check with the local Chambers of commerce, etc as they can be good sources of job leads
